Selecting a tomahawk for personal ownership has a slightly different criteria from selecting a knife. In many ways its uses are broader in scope, and is more clearly associated with our military personnel in terms of hard use and combative contexts. Of all the tomahawk model designs, it is the compact tomahawk that is most preferred by our military personnel, despite the fact that it is, in fact, the more purpose-driven design, compared to its larger cousin - the full size tomahawk.
In this video I will be sharing with you several compact Tomahawks;
- The Cold Steel Recon Hawk
- The Wingard Wearables Stingray
- The Tirona/Lusky Compact Multo Tomahawk
- The RMJ Shrike S13
- The Sayoc-Winkler RnD Compact Tomahawk
This episode reviews my personal criteria of “philosophy of use”, relating to high-volume repetitions of tomahawk fighting techniques, and how each Tomahawk meets this criteria from the perspective of optimization, rate of perceived effort, and safety. Toughness and sharpness are secondary considerations in this episode, because our primary use of these tools, as martial artist, is for our effective life-giving practice.
I hope you enjoy this video! 🙏🏽🔥👊🏽

For combative applications, folks will be reaching different conclusions once they experience chopping and extraction tests on flesh-and-bone targets (or at least soft target surrogates). Test at full length/reach of the chop or spike, and also test at very confined space with limited room to accelerate the axe into target. The combination of higher weight + bearded chopping blades usually gets a big 👎 There are reasons why historic battle proven tomahawks are rarely or barely bearded and usually weigh well under a pound.

I think this is an interesting point that you make, especially since the demand of today’s consumers revolve more around double duty (both combat and utilitarian), as this is also the demand of today’s military (which is the RMJ S13 Shrike serves).

You know, per background, I do so love these FMA type hawks... I just reckon, in real modern combat considering the da**** f***ing firearms might just be my breacher...

There is 1.625” difference in overall length between the full size Shrike and the S13. Nowhere close to “…3 maybe even 4 inches.” Just incase anyone watching and reading the comments was curious about the actual measurement difference.

And the S13 is one of the heaviest tomahawks in the video. I get that it could be “well balanced”-since it’s got a LOT of metal running throughout its length-that may flow well. But all that mass still has to be accelerated in the chop, decelerated in direction changes. That’s not a nimble weapon.

@wingardwearables it is more double-duty than pure weapon.

Thanks for the great comparisons. What would be a good resource for learning how to fully utilize the Winkler RnD?

First off, its not pike, its "Spike" As in Spike Hawk. All the ones you showed are useless in a camping scenario. I have 6 old school tomahawks with wooden handles, 5 from Cold Steel, and one from CRKT, not a single one of them have a Spike, so I can use them as tools around camp, and as weapons. The hammer on three of them would truly leave a dent. You want a good fighting hawk, take a look at the Cold Steel Norse Hawk. Not only does it three nicely, but with two points and a nice wide blade, in a fight it would make a mess of the other person. But, I can still do camp tasks with it. So unless I am going off to war, and at 62 years old, I doubt that. I would never buy one of those Tactical Spike Hawks.

I don’t do camp tools for my channel, as my expertise is on the martial/well-being side. 🙏🏽

@@RolandoEstocada I have five I guess you could call them Classic tomahawks, No spikes, with wooden handles. And yet I can fight with all five of them. So they are also "Tactical" but useful in camp. I looked up some of the ones you showed, and it blew my mind when I read "for Hunting, camping and survival". Any ways, that's my two cents worth.
