Today we will be taking one of the most frequent and convenient trains between 2 EU capital cities. Bratislava and Vienna and served by 2 different train lines, and multiple daily connections. This is the electrified line, and in my opinion, the best one... enjoy the video!

GySEV is the last bit of railway remaining from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is an Interesting type of Railway between 2 countries (Austria and Hungary) It has a very pleasing look. In Hungary we call them GySEV but in Austria they known as Raaberbahn (Raab is a city in Hungary. In Hungarian name its Győr. so its like. "Győr Railway") GySEV is a short name for "Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurti Vasút Zrt." in the Austrian side it is "Raab-Oedenburg-Ebenfurter Eisenbahn AG." before 2008 it is called ROeE. Their premier locomotive is the Siemens Eurosprinter or Taurus and the Siemens Vectron (Which is MÁV's Next Locomotive, Going to replace the estimated 1/3 of MÁV's 431/432/433 units.)

nice train. it feels like cross between a low floor tram and an interurban DMU. That being said this in Australia would be suburban length journey so you would be lucky to even have a toilet on board.

oh, and another benefit of this route for a train fan is that it passes around Vienna's (and possibly Austria's) biggest freight sorting yards aka Kledering, which has also some sidings full of passenger locos and trains... a real joy to see... in case you want to see Kledering in action, there is a service 72A I believe from Simmering train station to Hasenleiten, and from there it is a short walk to the overpass over the sorting station :) you're welcome :D

Great video! I live in Petržalka, only a few minutes by foot from the station, so whenever I go to Vienna, this service is an obvious choice. And as an added benefit, I get to avoid our horrendous central station xD

If you liked it so much maybe you should also try the connection Wien Hbf to Bratislava hl. st. with the REX 8. It also leaves from the same station but stops at the main station in Bratislava. Its also a more normal Push-Pull set with 3 Cityshuttle coaches, 2 ZSSK Slovak coaches and a ÖBB 2016 (Eurorunner20). It still runs diesel locos as of now but the line will get electrification so might have to be quick before they maybe change out the coaches. As a bonus it runs on the longest straight piece of rail in all of Austria. Its about 30km of straight track between Hirschstetten and Breitensee bei Marchegg. ^^

@@NonstopEurotrip True. I mean another Idea you could try is the Mariazellerbahn. Most of the Videos about that are either german or documentations about it. While it is only 1 Line from St.Pölten to Mariazell it is pretty interesting and it does also have 2 trains running first class services daily if thats something interesting for you or the viewers. ^^

There’s a slim chance of the current rolling stock being replaced anytime soon because Slovakia seemingly forgot there are wires waiting at marchegg so the cross border bridge is still unelectrifed

I mean the train goes every hour from Bratislava Petrzalka, every hour from Bratislava Hlavna Stanica (if you miss one just take line 93 from one to another train station - takes 10-15 minutes), there's like 60-70 different bus lines a day, city line 901 going to Hainburg where you can get a train to Vienna and even a boat between cities (Twin City Liner). Yeah you can hardly find better connection between 2 capital cities, and most of the cities in general :)

I like that the Gysev sets have the green theme inside as well. On this route, how do you know if your train will be ÖBB or Gysev?

What a smart looking regional train - thanks for reviewing it. The price for the 2 competng services I think is the same as EUR 16. Does this operator also do the day return special for EUR 16 , with free public transport in Bratislava thrown in?

I think the Amsterdam-Schiphol-Rotterdam-Antwerp-Brussels IC route is also one of the best cross-border connections between two EU capitals. Every hour a train leaves without reservation. This IC train runs on the high-speed rail and is therefore not slower than the Thalys and Eurostar, which are more expensive and require reservation.

the IC is a hour slower then Thalys 160km/h vs 300 it will get faster in a few years when the Intercity New Generation trains arrive but those will still be limited to 200km/h. still a great service though

At the end of your very nice video you write 'Or train now continues on to Deutschkreutz, an Austrian town on the border with Hungary.' That's correct, but you should also mention that to get there the train has to cross Hungarian territory for about 15 kilometers via the city of Sopron. I can amend that the northern line to Bratislava main station is upgraded at the moment. Until next year the line will be without level crossings, will become selectively a double track line and will be electrified. So it can be expected that the northern line then will also get modern rolling stock.

i prefer going by boat sadly Lod doesn't operate the hydrofoils anymore, now you can only go by Twin City LIner. But this train seems nicer then expected.

Recently travelled on the ÖBB version of this train. They are very comfortable and efficient but are sadly replacing the classic Austrian push-pull loco hauled trains. 😩

I've taken this one a couple times and the legroom for the airline style seats is awful. The footrest just takes away too much space and makes for even less space. Also, it still doesn't make sense to me why they use those nicer trains on the route to Petrzalka and the old ones to Bratislava main station. Should switch it around imo.

The leg room definitely looked quite bad. Not nice for those of us with longer legs! However, these new trains cannot go to Bratislava main station, as there's a section of non-electrified track on the way from Vienna to that station. Therefore, they have to use old train cars with diesel locomotives for that route instead.

€16 for a 74 km route is a very high cost for a regional service (a for a train in general without dinamic pricing!) This means that the yield is 21.6 cent€/km, very lucrative and, in my opinion, too much! Moreover, this route faces high competition from the long distance bus companies, offering good quality of buses (still not as good as this train of course), same travel time and dinamic pricing starting from JUST €1 and rarely going over €10. Need to work on that in my opinion (as I can see in the video and reading some comments also the load factor of the train is showing some poor volumes unfortunately)

That is true on the surface, however, the more sensible trip Wien Hbf - Bratislava hl. st. via Marchegg only costs 11€. Standard regional tickets are also a bit of a tourist trap in Austria since you can get a railcard for 66€/year (19€/year if you're under 26) that reduces prices by about 50%. For this trip you would only pay 9,60€ or 6,30€ respectively.

And also if not using ÖBB, then from the Slovak railways ticket offices or online, you can buy an Euregio Wien return ticket for 14 €, which is valid for any return connection between Bratislava and Vienna via both Marchegg and Petržalka on a given day (if bought online) or for a period of 14 days! (if bough in a ticket office), giving you a price of 7€ per journey with very high flexibility, from my experience much much better than the bus connections, which are the best only if you want to get to the Vienna airport imo. (and a bit of a hidden tip, if the printed ticket does not get checked and marked by the train conductor, it retains its validity, although there are cheap weekly and monthly tickets for that also, so as it was said above, locals usually are able to get a better deal than a tourist)

I‘m traveling to Vienna next week and now I‘m tempted to make a daytrip to Bratislava. ÖBB offers a discounted return ticket called „Bratislava-Ticket“ (what a surprise!) for 16€ which includes a daypass for public transport in Bratislava. How do I get from Petrzalka to downtown? Is it easy and convenient? Or is it better to take the diesel train to the main station?

Getting from Petržalka station to the city centre takes like 15 minutes by bus. The easiest way would be to take bus number 80, from right in front of the station. Or you could take bus number 91, which leaves from a stop which you'll get to when you go through the underpass from the station. Taking 80 means less walking, taking 91 means less stops, up to you :)

Hi. I also prefer the Slovakian livery over the Austrian one, but I'm not convinced how well it works inside the train. I liked the rate of flow of the water into the sink in the toilet - so many trains have only a bare trickle. I'm not sure whether you mentioned the speed at which this train travelled the route to Wien.

@@samtrak1204 there used to be a more direct train track through Wolfsthal (Where the S7 train from Vienna nowadays ends, only a few kms from Bratislava), from the late 19th century till the end of the WW2, which got discontinued after the war because of the Iron curtain, mostly. Nowadays you have to use two of the other connections, since there are about 6 kms of tracks missing in this shortest link.

12:26 That train does not run on 4 D-cell batteries. It uses electricity and lots of it. Electricity is mostly produced using coal, oil or gas--- all fossil fuels. Occupancy: 10%. I wonder how many KWs per person that 41 mile ride required. Your "green" bubble is not as large as you think. It does get way larger as occupancy increases.

As soon as the train crosses the austrian border, it's using solely energy from renewable sources. Austrian Railways even own nine hydro electric dams with which it supplies 95% of all electricity needed to all trains that run in Austria. And for the remaining 5% they buy energy from other electricity operators (only renewable sources as well of course) ... So what you're saying is, at least for Austria and partly trains in germany, plain wrong.

@@rolmaxify According to the internet (for what it's worth) 70% of electricity in Austria is from "rewewable" sources. Does that mean it is ok to squander it on a train with 10% occupancy? Would it not have a greater benefit if used to deminish use on the remaining 30%????

@@cestmoi1262 Yes, it is okay. The only reason why trains are popular in the first place is the fact that you can get to most places very easily almost hourly. It‘s a no brainer to use the train, simply because you can get almost everywhere, including small villages, and with a high frequency schedule. And guess what people would start to use in case trainservices in general were not convenient: They would buy cars instead. And a lot of them. Because the number of people who didn‘t buy cars in the first place due to great trains is in the hundredthousands in Austria. And apart from that: You‘ll find very little trains with such a low occupancy. Almost every train will be much more busy at some parts of its journey

A large coal or gas plant can achieve an efficiency of over 40%, a modern diesel train only 25 to 35%. Stationary generators are just inherently more efficient and cleaner than mobile ones.

I actually used the train from the Wien HBF to the Bratislava hl.st and as far as I know it is fully electric and also cheaper. but maybe I got something mixed up
