What is the best way to detangle your hair type? What is the difference between all the different types of detangling brushes and styling brushes and what are they used for? What are the best detangling brushes and styling brushes for natural hair? Will detangling on wet hair cause breakage? We are finally going to address all these questions and more today explaining how to detangle different hair types for the quickest and easiest damage-free method, including the best brushes to use and the difference they make for each hair type. And while brushing textured hair is often frowned upon, brushing wet-hair is sometimes said to cause breakage, and styling with a brush is thought to be counter-intuitive (why would you brush out the curls to define them??) I’ll explain each of these theories as we go along and when/why you would want to use any type of brush on your hair. From a comb to brushes, to picks, this is your complete guide and all of my tried and true go-to tools. Without further ado, let's get to it!

Something to add: If you're one of those people the denman brush doesn't work for - the tangle teezer wet brush is great to style long 2b - 3a type hair because it doesn't seperate the hair as much and cause frizz like the denman brush does for some people with 2b/2c hair

I have 2a/2b hair that I always thought was completely straight, but just frizzy. Dry brushing has caused so much breakage so when I found out I could detangle my hair wet it completely changed the game for me. I've been detangling in the shower for about 2 years now and my hair has never been this healthy. Before my hair never felt like it wasn't growing at all because it was just breaking off all the time, now I'm retaining more length than ever. So I just wanted to thank all the curly girls for helping with my hair care. ❤️

As a wavy girl, it is SO REFRESHING and VALIDATING to hear you mention that wavy types can dry brush! I use my Wet Brush for like... everything. Detangling before/during the shower, styling, smoothing, even touch-up detangling throughout the day. I've seen so many people say that wavy types shouldn't use a brush on dry hair (or EVER) because it "ruins the waves" and I've just never found that to be true.

@sarinaalonzo
@sarinaalonzo 4 года назад
Hey girl! I dont know if this will help but when my hair gets matted (i have fine hair and a looser texture) I put deep conditioner on my hair, a plastic cap, and then i warm up water (heat it up to a point that you feel comfortable with) dip a towel in it, extract the extra water from the towel and then i put the towel in top of my plastic cap. After that, i put a shower cap on top of all of that to encapsulate the heat, that makes my nots softer and makes it easier for me to detangle when i have matted hair.

Hey, I'm sorry to hear about your Mum. I used to have long dreadlocks, and brushed them out last year. It took like 4 hours per dread, and took months. My advice is to tease out as much as you can with your fingers, almost like you're trying to fluff it up and , then use something like a metal tail comb, and tease at the edges of the knots using the point. I actually used a pin, and a metal skewer. Work from the bottom up and keep combing the loose hair to stop it tangling, and switch between methods. I didn't use conditioner, I tried it on a few and found it easier to identify the real problem areas without. I did condition after. Obviously my experience is a bit different, and only what worked for me, but I hope it helps in some way. Bekki

So I’m apparently 3 years late 😂 as I just saw this video! And today I skipped on out and bought a paddle brush with nylon bristles and that odd brush you showed for wet detangling. And OMG, I just used the paddle brush with my prepoo and compared to using my wide tooth comb I had almost no shedding! I’ve always been advised to stir clear of brushes even with my wet detangling so I’ve always used a wide tooth comb. I have mid back length 3c/4b natural curly hair for reference here and when I decided to stop relaxing my hair about 10 years ago brushes were not considered to be black hair friendly. But based on your video and the Blowout Professor gut talking about using brushes for detangling I decided to try something new and I’m so glad I did! Thanks!❤

Mell! Thank you so much for everything. I found you a few days ago when I was considering cutting my own hair. I have been cutting my husband's hair at home for the past 3.5 years or so. I haven't gotten my hair cut ONCE in 2020 because of COVID and I desperately need a cut. Since the infection rate is so high where I live, I decided to cut it myself. I am SO thankful to have found your channel! I actually believe that I can do it on my own now. Additionally, you have helped me to define my curls again! I grew up in IL where my hair was curly all the time. Moving out to CO, where there is little humidity, means my curls became wimpy and sad. I cannot wait to begin using your tips in my routine. YOU are a lifesaver. Also, you and your sister have a lovely (and funny) relationship together. :)

I literally have a drawer full of different types of brushes from the past (decades) that I used depending on how long my hair was, how it was cut & how I styled it. I also have a drawer of curling irons/hot brushes plus a very expensive flat iron that I never once used. Just getting my hair dry was usually time consuming & exhausting enough lol. Wearing it natural has freed me from all that even though it requires more of an investment in products. I hated blow driers until I discovered the diffuser attachment. With the massage brush it is again a pleasure to wash my hair. And my scalp is so much cleaner after using it compared to washing with my hands. Thank you for this video! I'm currently sporting a very short cut that I'm now growing out. I discovered during my pregnancy (my daughter is now 17, it's been a bit) that my hair wasn't straight but wavy to curly. I had spent years brushing it straight and drying it straight so I just didn't know my hair actually had some texture to it. I've decided to grow it back out and try to see just what my texture is for the first time. My hair has grown a bit since this profile pic was taken and I'm getting a bit of curl starting at the nape of my neck. I have on occasion in recent years seen that my hair will actually develop some ringlets. This will be an interesting journey. Thank you so much for your videos because honestly, more "curly girl method" videos are intimidating as hell.

I literally just got a new detangling brush today. It's soft with those little balls at the ends and so good at wet brushing (it was advertised as a wet & dry brush). And it cost like 7€. Absolute steal. I'd love to learn more about oils and what ingredients to look out for - or what captions to look out for for fine, wavy (like 2B/C-3A) hair. I'm trying to build a routine and slowly getting a collection of products but I'm only missing a nice oil/serum at the end (and a leave-in but that's easier to figure out)

@@RacquelMariePerez thank you! I just quickly checked the price (can't afford products that are too pricey currently so I'm living with 2€ styling creams and mousses lmao) but once I settle in my new home and can invest a bit more I'll definitely give it a try! I think I heard several curly RU-vidrs mention it while binging curly videos, too. thank you so much ❤️❤️

Just wanted to say thank you! Your videos have helped me so much. I started embracing my curls a few years ago but it has only been since discovering your video that I have been able to style them nicely. When I am at work I do tend to put my hair up so it is out of my face. Todat I wore it down and one of my regulars comment on my curls...she hadnt realized that the curls were natural and said she thought I'd used a curling iron to do my hair. It was like yes its a good curl day. So thank you so much for teaching us and keep up the great videos

@@ashleesmall6458 I've seen a lot of videos of people using dupes, and they work just fine so don't worry about that, also Mell has a video of how she uses it, but while you learn it could be a challenge You can also search for videos using the denman brush, a lot of different people use different techniques and you might find one that works for you (if you would like, I recently watched a video of a girl called Alexa's curls, she has a technique where she "fingercoils" with the brush, and it's kinda weird, but her hair looks amazing, so maybe look it up and try it) Also, I've realize that the more I style my hair, the more the denman brush "works" (like, it gets more defined), so don't lose hope!!
