I should have made these lids years ago. If you have an aquarium without a lid, this is a great option on how to make your own custom lid for your fish tank.

Another good thing to do with those DIY lids is to use silicone to plug up the holes on each side to keep water from getting in the channels.. If water gets in there Algae can start growing inside the channels and mess everything up.. Just put a bit of silicone into each hole on both sides and your'e all good.. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.. I watch all of your videos.. I didn't see the comment below about using some silicone.. I think the way I explained it is a little better for those who can't picture the ends..

@@Kofoedsan if its clouded from algae or mildew, you can use diluted bleach to clean it. then you will have to soak it in water to remove all bleach. see, bleach does not easily rinse off things. if you put some on you hands you an rinse them you can feel the slipperiness linger. not sure if bleach degrades by itself in sunlight, or how long that might take. when i did hydroponics i would add 1 capful bleach to 30 gals of water to kill the bacteria and algae, which worked very well and did no harm to the plants. fish are not plants. but you may be able to use an extremely diluted solution if you soak it a overnight. sodium thiosulfate neutralizes it, which is in the declor drops used for fish. when bleach breaks down it turns into NaCl, table salt. ''Sodium hypochlorite, commonly known in a dilute solution as (chlorine) bleach, is an alkaline inorganic chemical compound with the formula NaOCl (or NaClO), consisting of a sodium cation (Na+) and a hypochlorite anion''

I love this product! In Australia it's called Suntuf Sunlite, and I've been using the 10mm thick panel for all of my aquarium lids for a couple of years now. My biggest cat (weighs about 20 lbs) regularly roosts on the lids of my 150 gallon tank, no problems! Retains its clarity reasonably well, and doesn't scratch too easily. I also have pet carpet pythons and I've used it for the back and end panels of their enclosures, insulates really well.

SUCH A RELIEF TO HEAR THIS Because I need this type product to make a new lid for our 75 gallon turtle tank. Our cats have taken to sitting on the first tank cover we made out of that plastic egg crate type material and cracked it. So Glad to hear it can withstand cat lounging!!!👍😊

I make my lids the same way, but I even bought some clear acrylic hinges from Amazon and cut the lid in two and made it so that you can just open it. I used a similar 3M adhesive hook as a knob or handle for the side that opens.

WOW!!! Answer to prayer!!! No lie!! I was LOOKING for Aquarium lid DIY suggestions!!! I think this IS IT!! We have a 75 gallon turtle tank. We built an above the tank basking station on one side from egg grate and plexiglass panels from a DIY Tutorial that the "Long Live Your Turtle" guy did. We covered the other side with a piece of egg crate fitted into the rim. It worked great until the cats decided to start laying on top of the egg crate and cracked it. I was going to consider something sturdier like metal hardware cloth but I hated the thought of possibly scratching up the metal rim or glass and wasn't sure it that would work. That's when I did a tank lid DIY search and found this. I'm hopeful to give this solution a try!!! Thanks for your video!!!👍😊

I currently use that double wall green house panels for my 180g Arowana tank. They are amazing . My fav thing about useing it is that is is firm yet flexible, so when my Arowana jumps he doesnt knock himself out from a hard acrylic or shatter glass. The con is you do need to seal off the ends of it where moisture can get in because it will start to mold inside of them.

Oh my gosh!! Thank you for this awesome tip!! I've been struggling with having a weird shaped corner tank that came lidless. I've had it for 9 years now. Same fish too!!But I had made a window screen frame and the chemicals in the tank started deteriorating the screen and my whole tank turned completely cloudy. (Possibly vinyl coated fiberglaas? Idk.) So thank you. I will lower my energy bill too. I have had 3 fish jump ship. Was able to save 2. A feeder gold fish that used to be 1" long and is now 9"+. Moby. And 2 different loaches. The first 4", jumped and I didn't hear it and he died. But the second loach 9"+ jumped and I grabbed him up, rinsed off the cat hair and dust bunnies in the sink and he was a slippery sucker, had to collect him with a cup. He's just fine. Thank you for the cool tip.

Zenzo if I wore one of your shirts it would insult your brand. I am glad you put this up! I have been screwing around with lids and I tried to do glass panels that slid one over the other. The physics of wet glass sliding on dry glass is against me. Some Aquarists use that plastic material Realtors have their signs made from, but it is not really clear and I need good light penetration as do we all. So my next step was going to be the hinged material that lets you lift half the lid. So now you come along yeah sure maybe it's been done a few times before but I have not seen this exact material made. Will this filter UV out? I will check I don't expect you to do all my work for me. Thank you again for this. After this video was over I was directed to "Clean your aquarium like a Pro!" You did it two years ago and there is a huge difference in your presentation. You were not bad at all, just maybe a bit more nervous or unsure, but you were relatable. I am like many others and I like the DIY King Joey, a fellow Canadian and a decent guy. Now he feels that he seemed so raw and nervous or rediculous because he was so raw. I have said this to him and I will say it to you. I have done TV show presentations and I know how nervous people can be, but it is okay because it makes you relatable. Maybe even encouraging because people look at you being nervous or just a bit off, you know not polished, but we look at this and think, "Maybe I could do this!" People draw a comparison and find you more relatable. I remember my first ever livestream over a year ago, I asked the guy about a 90 tall I had just bought. I didn't know it was specifically designed for corners thought it was just a cool shape. That was you that did the livestream and you had the decency to message me with some information. You are one of my valued Aquarists on my watch list and I always find you relatable as well as informative. As Bentley would say, "Stay awesome!"

Thanks for the post! I was able to make enough lids for three 20-longs, four 5-1/2 gallons, and a 10 gallon, with material left over! That's $4-$5 per lid! I use my circular saw to make the big cuts and a bandsaw for the notches. Eight lids for the price of a single 30" glass top! Only other difference is that I cut them so that the ribbing goes lengthwise to the tank. Gives me a very nice rounded front edge.

Its 3 years ago but I don't think it was necessary for you to change this space. The room looked fine. It was the last thing I cared about when watching your video. Its 3 years ago though so I doubt that feedback matters now. To be fair though on the website......the revised room does look great so there is that! Thanks for sharing this info on lids as I was not happy with my glass lid for my 20 long and the way the connector for the 2 pieces of glass essentially blocks out some light. Also when removing it for anything significant while its not necessarily heavy, lighter is better and in this case, dropping it is bad. I need lids mainly for evaporation control. I will be buying some of this soon and experimenting. Thank you for the video!

Does the fish tank temperatures match the temperature that you keep the room? Or does the science work out that you have to keep the room a few degrees warmer to reach the temperature goals of your tanks? Is it more economical to heat this way vs. aquarium heaters?

Both. With the tanks that are on the higher level, and if they have lids, they will stay as warm as the room, or even warmer (aquarium lights). For there lower tanks, they may be a couple of degrees cooler, and if a low tank is lidless, could be 3-4 degrees lower. As far as heaters vs heating the room, it depends on how many. If I had let's say 6-8 tanks down in my fishroom, it may make more sense to have a 100 watt heater in each tank. With a room of 20+ tanks, it makes more sense to me to heat the room. Especially when you consider heater failure, cost of heaters, number of outlets needed, overloading the circuit, etc.
