The best DIY chicken feeder - keep feed dry and safe from rodents and birds

After having issues with doves and rodents stealing our chicken feed, this was the solution that worked for us. Once setup, it took the chickens about a half an hour to figure it out. If your chickens don't take to it, make the hole a little larger to let more feed fall. Please don't forget to share and like this video !

What a great video. I have searched the internet for instructions on how to keep the vectors out of the chicken feed. You did a great job putting this together. You are to the point and don't waste time. Nicely done.

I made one for my chickens last night thanks to your video! I added similar chains and attached the bucket with a heavy duty steel bracket on the wall. 5 minutes the chickens were pecking on it and 10 minutes later they were all eating .Amazing!

Wow, what a good idea! I have a bucket with nipples for water and this will compliment it well. I was also excited about the T-post to hang them on. And it looks nice and keeps things clean and sanitary, too. Brilliant! Thank you!
@nrgyzr2012
@nrgyzr2012 7 лет назад
Everyone said I had to "train or show" my chickens how to use "chicken nipples" on a water bucket. We had 1 chicken peck the silver tip, water came out, the rest started pecking the other silver nips. If 1 chicky bird does it, they all want to 😂😂😂😂😂. So ours already know pecking silver-hangy-things get them something. So they should take right to this. Great idea! Thanks for sharing!!

Built this a few weeks ago with two toggles in one bucket; smeared peanut butter and then jelly on the toggles for a few days in a row and my 2.5-year-old hens figured it out after a little less than a week. Make sure to use eyebolts and put the loop end inside the bucket. At one point the hens unscrewed the nut/washer, so we may have to use LockTight on it if it happens again. Packrats are still sneaking around but I haven't seen them successfully hit the toggles, and I'm pleased they aren't rummaging around in the food bin, now.

We made one a few days ago but 3 days later and one rooster and 12 hens have yet to figure it out no matter how many times I show them. Peanut butter and jelly just might do the trick! Thanks for the idea!

On ours, I made sure to use what's called "fender washers", which are big washers with a small hole. The 1 - 1/2 inch washer catches a bit of the food that falls, and when the chickens go for that, it releases more food. Chickens are great copycats, so once the first bird gets it, they all want to do it. This is better than any commercial feeder out there, and sure cuts down on waste. Many thanks.
@glitch177k
@glitch177k 4 года назад
I took yours a step further and used plastic lids from yogurt containers with the washer underneath it. It's enough to catch a lot of what falls but not stable enough for something to climb on it. The chickens rarely leave any food on it and I've never seen food on the ground.

This is INCREDIBLY brilliant and helpful! Out here in the Mojave we find we're often feeding squirrels and mice. The squirrels are the worst because they steal eggs. It's a daily chore setting up the traps, gathering and either killing (squirrels) or releasing (mice). THANK YOU!!

This is a fantastic design! The chickens didn't understand it at first but we showed them how to use it and they understood it immediately. I used a 2 gallon bucket because ours is inside the coop and used an old adjustable bolt leg from a washing machine with a cone shaped plastic end on the feeding side. I like having a bit of weight from the rubber foot so not too much falls out. I didn't have to buy anything I just reused some random parts.

This is pure genius. I don't have a ton of money and I don't need feeders to cost three prices and I don't need food wastage. This will even work for small chicks as long as they are with their mom or another caretaker bird...the large bird WILL release food for them which falls on the ground where they can easily eat it......no more worries about if they can get into the feeder or not. My only question, will the crumb feed pack around the bolt and make it hard to move???
@WindsofChange
@WindsofChange 6 лет назад
I think I will add a shallow pan under it on the ground only because at some times of the year the ground gets pretty wet. They have houses and ways to get off of the ground but I really don't want their food dropping on it...so a plastic or metal shallow pan for it to fall into ought to do the job.

I like this idea but rodents crawl and they can land n top of the bucket and chew through the top. Thinking I need some sort of metal lid to cover the lid to make it rodent proof so they can chew the plastic lid. Open for suggestions! 😂 Thinking about double layered chicken wire in over lapping in various directions covering the top making it chew proof!
