i would love to address some things (not in a negative way) wire kennels have there goods and bad(s) they are good for if your not home for a while or just to have with a blanket over so your dog feels safe but overall plastic kennels are better and if you get a gunner kennel or ruffland (the pink kennel in video) they are 100% safe and are used in many dog sports for hunting and travel they are also very durable and are so much easier to clean plus its easier to crate train with a plastic kennel, but if you have a larger dog plasic is still better they arent thin plastic like she states, there are quite thick and last a LONG TIME!, plus wire kennels over time rust and ours fell apart within 3 years the front 2 wires fell off and bent and our dog doesn't try to escape but she is high drive working dog so she needs a plastic, i don't mean to be rude but this is for people that are unsure

I was searching the midwest on amazon, got a lot of negative feedback. Is it a safe crate? Are wires too sharp?

I've never had an issue, I use the Lifestages. Works for most dogs unless they have severe separation anxiety, but then no mental crate would be recommended. Also depends on how much you're willing to pay.

Hi! Thank you for making this video. I want to adopt a puppy from the Animal Welfare League, but I’ve only ever had cats before. I’m not sure what breed or size the puppy will be. I’ve heard that when using wire crates, dogs can get their paw stuck in between the bars, so I was thinking about maybe only getting a soft crate instead, but do you with a puppy would be able to bite through the fabric? I want to create the safest environment for my future puppy! Let me know what you think if you get a chance.
@rexytheservicedog
@rexytheservicedog 4 года назад
A puppy will definitely be able to chew through so i wouldnt bother wasting the money. Also if your adopting, I would recommend you get an adult as you have never had a dog before. It will already have a set personality. Try to chose a breed recommended for first time owners and a dog that matches your energy level and lifestyle. Remember dogs can be very energetic and some need hours of exercise to be happy. Puppies can be a crapshoot from shelters. There will be a good chance they wont know the parents temperaments or health much less the actual breed. My friend adopted a "lab" puppy which ended up being a field lab mixed with Belgian Malinois and it ended up being WAY to much for her to handle. I've only had one incident with a metal crate injury and it was with my Alaskan Malamute when she was about a year old. Most dogs are not nearly as tenacious as her though. I definitely recommend the Midwest Lifestage. You could potentially use a plastic kennel but some dogs feel claustrophobic and there is less airflow. Let me know if you need any more help or advice!

yeah i understand your thought but there's more then just the sleeping part ,its the travel aspect as well. its 100% safer to have a dog or any animal for that matter in a crate for traveling. So its not always for sleep(you must be lucky not to have your puppy peeing on everything! and also if you leave dogs home alone(im just going assume you have a safe place to do that in your house) its a good place to put them, if they arent coming with you.

@@uniquebirdie8186 I know someone who doesn't crate her dogs at all. 4 of them have had to have emergency surgery in the last 8 months for intestinal blockage after tearing and eating things. One of them ate apart the couch. Do I think some people abuse crates? Yes. Most people don't. Mine are only in there when im at work because they like to chew when bored due to their breeds. My dogs also get several hours of exercise and mental stimulation, much more than other people so they pretty much sleep the entire time.
@rexytheservicedog
@rexytheservicedog 4 года назад
Be careful, when my Malamute was younger she detached one of the bars and got her foot impaled on it. I would definitely retrain with lots of positive reinforcement, add mental stimulation like a kong, and exercise you dog before putting it in the crate. The metal crates aren't built to be heavy duty. I would definitely buy a more hardcore crate if you can afford it. There are a couple brands I could recommend based on your price point.

I have parakeets should I also get a dog . If my parents would let me get a German shepherd
@rexytheservicedog
@rexytheservicedog 4 года назад
German Shepherds are absolutely NOT recommended for first time dog owners, especially for someone who still lives with their parents. I paid over $3000 for a really well bred GSD and he still has a whole bunch of health issues. I spend well over $200 a month on his food, supplements, meds and everything else. He has bad yeast infections constantly and he's already having hip issues. German Shepherds can also ve extremely pushy and dominant. If they don't get enough exercise every day they can become moody and aggressive. For my dog that means a minimum of 2 hours of high activity. That does not count walks which are used for training/socialization. I mean running and games that involve mental exercise. They also need constant socialization through their whole lives to combat nervousness or aggressive behavior. And if you get a puppy there is a minimum 1-2 years of extreme mouthiness. They mouth everything, that means chewing and biting EVERYTHING including you if you don't train them properly. There is a reason so many GSD end up in shelters. People get them then cant handle them and dump them. I would seriously NOT recommend you getting a GSD as I seriously doubt you have the time and training knowledge to raise one or care for one properly.

It is to help potty train them and to stop the chewing things they aren’t surrposed to. Also for adult dogs it gives them a safe space to go and relax.

@bitny4916
@bitny4916 3 года назад
So it is used for puppies? I get that. But I've also seen it for adult dogs over night (with no problems such as cable chewing) or when the owner is at work. I understand this if the dog is really problematic, but if the dog just chews the carpet, the problem should be solved in another way. I can imagine it as a safe place for a dog. Do you close it less often as the dog grows up?
@bitny4916
@bitny4916 3 года назад
@@thesemutts3217 that does sound a little bit like "let's cut the cats finger off, so it doesn't scratch my furniture". I think if you own an animal you should be able do understand the pets needs. and most dogs would stop chewing if they had an alternative. Same for cats and scratching
