The "Fucking Love Christmas" music video is one of my favorite things made by Doug, though it was originally part of a larger review. It's the most memorable part of it easily. I also remember liking some of the videos like "Disney Afternoon" or "Fox Kids" where he just goes over the history of a programming block because... well... that's nostalgic. It's what his channel should be about. Though that kind of retrospective content has become more common (and often longer and more detailed) by now. I also enjoy his recent "Freakshow Cinema" and "Dark Toons" series.
I watched Doug’s live action last airbender review years before I watched the series, it’s clear how much he loves the show. I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately because, well, apparently the studios haven’t learned from their mistakes Looking back on it I think a lot of it is down to him explicitly allowing more of himself and his actual opinions to bleed into the video (the NC connects with a “past self,” in this case Doug’s ATLA vlogs). I haven’t gone back for a proper rewatch but I feel like it would hold up, I actually think the framing where he’s the Avatar works pretty well Setting aside Doug’s relationship with his former colleagues, I think he could’ve matured into his niche the way everyone else did if it wasn’t for the NC
My fave vids from him are tied because he put legit passion into slowly breaking down why the movies are disgusting. And that’s his Pearl Harbor and Patch Adams reviews. Pearl Harbor has those stupid skits, yes, BUT it’s a great commentary on why the movie is horrible. Patch Adams Review is the better of the two for sure, but I love it because he calls it out passionately for how it’s moral is handled clumsily and how it doesn’t do the REAL Patch Adams justice.
I still like the guy. Yes, lot of shit content. But I stuck with him cause I dont really think lots said about him was ultimately his fault as much as the circumstances and people surrounding him. His real self seems so humble and grounded.
1. The Review Must Go On 2. Moulin Rouge 3. Scooby Doo The two first because I have a shitty musical taste and I actually enjoy his musicals (there's no The Wall in Ba Sing Se). Besides, I like that both videos revolve around trying to change an idea a character has about something. That's a type of fiction I enjoy and I think Doug could take more advantage of this method and use it to actually learn. Aaaanyway, the one of Scooby Doo is very meta and I like that it seems to come from a genuine place of not wanting to keep doing NC videos anymore. I don't agree with most of his opinions about the movie itself, but I like its perceived honesty.
3:35 And years later, you had the balls to makea joke of what if he tried to be Mario, Doug. Which joke is worse? The one that while stupid, makes some level of sense, or the one that's just random? Sorry, I know this is supposed to be a positive video, but I couldn't resist the potshot.
