Please note, as I mention in the video, 40 developer is high but this is what I used because it's all I had. I also mention that since this is a video on full highlights, not just roots, I will include what's already been bleached; this is why I said I would only do one more foil, as not to over process all of my hair. I know you professionals are "cringing" but if you actually listen, you can spare yourself the stress. If you're looking for just roots, here's my very first video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FxCmMNqQ04w.html

I know this is an older video but I did have a question. If you're doing highlights all over your head then obviously that is going to take quite a bit of time. If you leave the bleach on for 6 to 8 minutes as you said then by the time you get done with your whole head you will be well past the six to eight minutes for the foils where you started. How do you account for that? Or do you take the foils out immediately after you finish that final foil?
@joyc4587
@joyc4587 5 лет назад
Heather Scharding if you use a spray bottle of water on the foils that are done it will deactivate them. And btw 40 is fine, I’m a professional and I personally like a hi lift
@joyc4587

Oh and you don’t need to go over what is already blonde. It will eventually mush and fall off. Beauty School teacher says” once it bleached once it’s blonde once it’s bleached 2ce it’s gone.” Great job for anyone licensed or not! Love it
@lenabear7338
@lenabear7338 5 лет назад
You use a lower volume developer once you begin...so it varies on the level of your hair to begin with and amount of lift you're looking for. As an example 20 vol once you begin and then bump it up to 30 or 40 as you get closer to the end. You could also just use 20 vol all over. Just put more bleach on (but watch out for foils being too heavy), let process and once it stops, pop yourself under the dryer. A lot less damaging

So funny reading.. Trained stylists, desperately trying to validate their profession by criticizing this tutorial. Thank you for showing us how EASY this is. I've never had my hair done for less that $300, just for a trim and highlights. And honestly every time in the past that I let a "professional" do my hair it was a living nightmare. $300 was the least off my losses. I started cutting my own hair, last year and it comes out exactly how I want. Easy. Love doing it. Terrified to go back to a stylist, roots have grown to my ears. Im desperately searching for highlight tutorials. Already have the products. Thank you for your time and transparency. I'm ready.

You go! Remember, no one knows your hair like you do. Only bleach the dark part, not what's already blonde. I did it just for the video since I had so many requests for full highlights after a video I did on root touch up. Good luck!

I hear ya ray ... I too have spent serious money at local FAMOUS SALONS and wound up with orange hair and broken off falling out hair ... had to cut my mid back length hair into a Jennifer Lawrence pixie and wait for it to grow back ! Mine is coming in pure silver in streaks and what i'd really like to do is stop coloring all together but i have OCD and hate grow out ... i want to find my Natural silver streaks and lighten the dyed portion of the strand so there isn't a demarcation line .... when i let the roots grow in it gives the appearance of very thin and thinning hair because of the lack of color , plus it just looks unkept ... funky roots and chipped nail polish looks so freaking trashy and unkept i hate that .... THANK YOU LOU .... i think i will have my hubby watch this so he can help me with the back .... now i just gotta pick the correct lightener and/ or toner for the color i want ... thank you

I have my cosmetology license and I don't even TRUST stylists to touch my hair. Too many times of them messing my hair up and never getting what I'm hoping for. Plus, it's a lot cheaper to do my own anyways. I never got my hair colored in a salon because I know how much it costs. Always colored my hair, it's fun. Been cutting my own hair for 6 years now and been licensed for 5 years. What she's doing in this video is what they do in the salon anyhow, 40 vol lifts the hair 4 levels 20 vol is best to use if you need to lift 2 levels. Except starting on the bottom makes life a whole lot easier and thats how we were taught in beauty school. Just saying 😉 Definitely keep an eye on your hair while using lightener!

I just have one Question ? Why are stylist even watching this??? I thought this was a DIY for NON-Professionals !!! Also she said In the video like 5 times she was only doing the entire strand to show people how to do more than just a root touch up... SMH we should Empower each other not bring each other down...

Stylist watching a fellow stylist do hair is comparable to a mechanic watching another mechanic work on a car. 1 of 2 things WILL happen: 1. Old “war” (salon or beauty school ) stories are told that are fun to compare & laugh at. OR 2. CRITICISM or CORRECTIONs Why? Because everyone thinks their way is the only way, when we can all learn from one another

Been doing my own hair, cut and highlighting for over 20 years. I never liked the hairstylists' work; always had to touch it up and was angry I had paid so much. So, I decided to do my own. Since both my sisters were hairstylists (didn't live near me),they told me how to do it, plus I had watched hairstylists do it as well. Anyway, the answer for doing the back of your hair is a mirror on an extension arm (at Ikea) mounted on the opposite wall from the mirror over your sink. Then get a kitchen stool and sit on the stool with your back to the sink. Now you are in the perfect position to see the entire back of your head. I also place another kitchen stool to my right and put my bleach bowl, comb and foils on it. Another handy thing is to buy a smock like those worn in hair salons. It great for protecting your clothes. And you can use an old shower curtain to protect the floor. Also, if you run out of foils, just grab your kitchen aluminum foil and fold and tear or cut it with scizzors and viola! you have what you need. Since my hair is naturally dark and I lift it very light, I use 40 vol developer. I have it on my hair for about 45 mins. The secret to not overly damaging your hair is to MOISTURIZE afterwards! And also I only highlight every 4 months, not 6-8 weeks like they tell you to do. I have also found the best deep conditioner is coconut oil. Put it on your hair, let it set for 10-20mins then shampoo out but try to shampoo mostly the scalp and just rinse it through the ends. Then put your regular conditioner on and rinse out. That way the regular conditioner will close the cuticle of the hair shaft up after you applied the coconut oil and it will seal the moisture in. Good luck!

Thanks for your comments. Sounds like some great ideas. Although I’m a little nervous about using coconut oil. Seems like it will be hard to keep your hair from being greasy. How much do you use? My hair is shoulderlength so I’m wondering how much I should use.

It turned out pretty good! Not a bad way to do it. I’d just like to mention a few pointers.... 1- Never go past the foil edge. 2- Don’t put 40 Vol on already lightened ends, that’s how hair fries off. 3- I like to use tiny clips to hold the foil down so I can use both hands. 4- if you want two or even three tones in your hair you can swap out colors either in between the foils or in the foils. So the bleach in the foil and a darker color outside of the foil. Or every other one natural. Not everyone can afford to go get their hair done. So at home isn’t always bad. But always be careful and cautious, especially with bleach.

For those stuck with 40 vol developer as well, You can mix 1/2 dev w/ 1/2 water and BAM! Now you've got 20 vol (more or less) At least it's MUCH less damaging :) p.s. love your videos

Hello Lou I just wanted to tell you this is the best video I've ever seen as far as instructions go. I'm a 53 year old woman I've been doing my own bleaching highlighting frosting for about 20 years I just started doing extensions because at my age I'm losing my hair but I have never gotten the hang of the comb in the foil and pulling it down you explained it so perfectly thank you I love you I am waiting right now I wait usually 50 minutes with my hair and then I'm going to tone it I just started toning so this is a new thing for me also but I just want to say that I have a full head of foils and they look right I will take a picture and send it to you later thank you so much for your RU-vid video. And I apologize for all those run-on sentences of talk texting.

Thank you SOOOO MUCH!!! I’ve always done my own highlights mainly because I have bad luck at salons and also because I love doing hair & I’m too cheap to spend that much just on hair! With that being said, I’ve never been able to get the look I wanted with the way that I was doing it. I always did my rows front to back vs side to side and would be so bummed at the end because no matter how much or how little I weaved, it never came out as expected! So thank you for sharing this video! I am seriously obsessed with how good it comes out this way!!! THANK YOU!!!

very cute and a good job for an at home job. the reason highlighting from a salon is more expensive is because we use professional products and we spend 1200 to 2500 hours to learn the techniques. u should NEVER squish down the foils when highlighting and please people if u are not experienced do NOT use 40 vol u will literately melt your hair off if done incorectly. u are adorable and not knocking u just please remember we charge for our skill and our products and time.

i learned to do it on the back of my head. Yes, you need mirrors. Go get any of those $10-$15 full length mirrors from walmart or ross, put the nails in the top corners and connect with some shoe string, and you can hang the mirror on the wall with one of those door hooks or just a nail in the wall. If you have the room in your bathroom, hang it up horizontally, that works the best! I also practiced with a mixture of baking soda and conditioner a few times, and I timed myself, until I felt really confident. Start with the back first. Section off all hair in front from behind ears to the top crown of head, and pull into tie in front. you really only need about three tinfoils down the middle and two on each of the back sides. Leave that hair at the back of the head alone...i say at least. Highlights look weird there anyways. If you really really want to get that hair, I say wait till the next day, section off that back hair, and put the rest of your finished highlighted hair in a bun on the top of your head. It's a little too risky to try to do it all at once, i think.

I've been highlighting my own hair for years now, using the cap pull-through method, Clairol lightening powder, and 20% developer. It works great and is fool-proof with the cap, but this looks so much quicker! I may give it a whirl, I just don't know about doing the back myself with this method. Also, with the cap method....do you guys know of a good way to protect the ends from getting highlighted over and over again? The bleach sort of gets everywhere and it's harder to contain the placement of it while using the cap. I've been gooping some heavy conditioner on the ends while it processes for protection. For my medium to dark blonde hair, I tried using 30% developer once and it fried my hair and changed the texture to be brush-like. Sticking to 20% like I always did with great results. Great tutorial girlie!

Last year I went to the salon and paid $300+ THREE TIMES to try to get my dark brown hair light enough to show an ombre smokey gray-white color. The stylist could never accomplish it and it was always a stupid yellowish shade. She blamed me and my too-dark and 'damaged' hair that she could not possibly bleach any lighter or faster safely, and told me it 'was a process.' I let it grow out, bought a box bleach kit, did it myself in one weekend. Maybe the box bleach hurts my hair, maybe not -- but one rough treatment on the ends is going to do a lot less damage than three treatments over three months and still not getting results!! I'm going to want to change that color in 6 months, not spend 6 months trying to get there! I'm sorry, but results are more important, especially when I'm probably going to cut most of those ends off anyway at my next trim. Thank you for the tips; it's the placement that always gets me.

That's f'd up. Not everyone wants to pay $300 for highlights. I'm sure you're a hairstylist and want everyone to think that the ONLY way to get decent highlights is to pay someone. I'm sure there are still enough peeps left who don't want to do it themselves. Me for one. Not because hairstylists necessarily do it any better, but it IS usually faster, and I am a lazy girl. But for anyone who wants to try it themselves, I say go for it; it CAN be done if you are careful. No you shouldn't bleach over already bleached hair but if you feel the need to go lighter definitely use Olaplex.
@DanteVelasquez

The salon is not the only way to get decent highlights, and there are bad hairstylists who will mess it up just like there are people bad at what they do in every industry. Many people can do their hair on their own to their satisfaction. But as hairstylists, we have seen the disasters that come to us that we have to correct because people attempted to work with harsh chemicals without understanding how much they can easily cause damage. She made several mistakes that could easily have destroyed her hair and if someone else follows them, they could destroy theirs too. That being said if someone wants to do their highlights themselves they should do it. But hairstylists are not criticizing because we are trying to validate our jobs, we are commenting because we see things an untrained eye doesn't, just like any expert in their field would do when watching a layman.

Leniyems Victorero I understand a bit of what you’re saying; I went to hair school, and it drives me crazy when people think they can do better than licensed hair dressers. But not everyone can afford to keep their hair touched up at a salon, so I think it’s fine to try on your own and help others out.

Thanks Lou! Loved your video (my first subscription on RU-vid)! This will be my first time, but white is creeping in! Why do you buy the two bottles at Sally's instead of a box of color at the store? Are they better on your hair? How do you know what shade to do? Thanks for any advice--I'm excited to give this a go!

The thing is… since I have Straight dark-haired… is that she already has a lot of prior highlights, which is fine when it comes to the technique itself is great and it really does seem efficient like it’s definitely good to know how to do it but I can’t necessarily see the full result on like a plane canvas you know what I mean? So that we can see the results of using this technique clearly it’s just kind of mixed in with the rest of her highlights, I still may use this technique even though the weaving is alone intended to make it more natural especially if you do it at a slight Ingles that’s why weaving leaves out some regular hair to make it natural. You don’t have to do the whole slice chunk in between unless you’re doing each highlight or slices of highlights but yeah, this is still a great way for those who are new to it and just want an easy effective highly done at home! I really want to do this on myself, but not seeing clearer results has me just a little weary is all!

Sheila’s Beauty/ Hair/ Nails/ Fashion I used to sit on the floor, use a standup mirror that can tilt back and forth, and use an extra mirror that is full length. Put the full length mirror in front of you and the one that tilts behind you. Tilt the other one forward to where you can comfortably see the back of your head then tighten the screws on the sides of the tilting mirror to keep it at a tilt. I promise that this is a lifesaver.

Find a local beauty school. The cost will cheaper. Don't do this your self. Bleach is no joke. If your going to do it yourself then go with 20 vol NOT 40❗❗❗
@ashg4045
@ashg4045 6 лет назад
If you are pretty dang pro at doing your hair...You can do this. If you are just alright at doing your own, DON'T risk it. Reason being is that your movements are backwards in the mirror. You can screw this up real bad if you are not very skilled. Also, you would start from the nape of your neck and work your way up. I would use a 10 volume on the bottom half of my hair to buy more time for accuracy. Them use a 20 volume on the top half to allow my hair to catch up to the 10 volume. If your hair lightens extremely fast, only do the highlights on half of you head at a time with a 10 volume. Again, I only suggest doing this if you are real good at hair. I have personally had traumatic experiences at professional salons and not all college salons are good. I have a lot of hair color knowledge and techniques down, and am a risk-taker, so if you are confident... more power to you doing this.

Thanks for sharing. Fyi I found your "knife n paste" highlight process downright genious!! I'm not sure if I could use it as my hair takes forever yo lift. But trust me I will have some facial hair product in my house for root touch ups. Now my search continues for diy video that addresses how to eliminate the brassy tent that my hair tends to process towards.. I also use the purple shampoos and it helps TREMENDOUSLY between highlights. If you have any tips on avoiding brassy highlights plz let me know. 😊😊 thanks!!!

Love this! I realize this is old..but...my hair has a mind of its own. I cant part it and wear it on one side. Nope! It just falls to which ever side its going to lay that day. If I try and get it to lay on the other side it just doesn't work. so how would I highlight it with that problem? I have been dying my hair all my life but never done highlights. I did have it highlighted and paid attention and watched and was like wow this is easy. So i was just wondering how to get around that kind of hair. The way it is now after being highlighted some days I have them some says I don't depending on how my hair is laying. Sometimes it even wants met to wear bangs. Yours looks great!

As a professional I nearly had a heart attack. Here are some pointers....NEVER EVER bleach over bleached hair. Especially with 40 volume. You're very lucky! You pulled the foils out too soon because the roots were not ready. They should look like the inside of a banana. Thank God you did because the ends would have fried off. NO JOKE. Also, streaky highlights are out.... professionals know how to mask this. My suggestion. Find a color that matches your roots that's semi permanent. When those roots come in, start a shadowed root and when you get tired of that, save your money and once a year get an awesome balyage or highlight. You'll love it and it will look natural. Good luck:)

Thank you so much for this video. I have been wanting to do my own highlights for awhile now and you explain this perfectly! I do have a question: you mention that the 40 developer is really strong. Does that make it worse than a lower developer? Or does it just make it so the highlights develop more quickly. My hair is short at the moment and pretty pale blonde and most of it has been done with high lift color (all over), but I’m getting sick of having to spend tons of money and it never looks the way I want it to. I want to do just highlights on it, but want them to be very blonde so I can blend all this together as it grows out. Is 40 developer too high? My natural color (roots) is probably a mousy dark blonde or very light brown.
@annascott3542
@annascott3542 10 месяцев назад
Yes, 40 is more for ppl with dark hair like Latino, Asian, etc., dark brown to black. You can still use it and do as she did by adjusting the time to around 15 min. However, since your hair is already light and already has been chemically lightened, it’s a safer (as in preventing your hair from frying or drying out) option for you to go with 30v or even 20v but you’ll need to process for the whole time; 30-45 min.
