Acasis is neither thunderbolt 4 nor usb4 it is using titan ridge/tahini creek thunderbolt 3. It works well I have 3 of their enclosures. But just wanted to point it out that they’re not using a usb4 or thunderbolt 4 chip. Not that it matters as performance is amazing. They also have a usb3.2 gen 2 chip for connecting to a non thunderbolt USB port.

I bought the Acasis USB 4 NVMe enclosure last year and put an 8tb sabrent drive in it. When I started copying large files to it in MacOS it kept disconnecting itself, and when I contacted their support they told me that 8tb is not supported because it draws too much power. That was never mentioned anywhere in their Amazon listing. Needless to say that I returned it. I then bought an OWC NVMe enclosure and had zero problems. I would recommend that people stay away from this enclosure.
@Pedr4m
@Pedr4m 2 года назад
@Lucian M. This was on a Mac Pro (cheese grater) with six thunderbolt 3 ports and it was the only thing plugged in, so I don't think there was any interference. They may have released a newer revision to deal with 8tb drives, but the one in this review looked exactly the same as the one I bought and returned, down to the two thermal pads.

If you are saying using "OWC Envoy Express" as NVME external enclosure, look for the spec carefully. OWC one does not run full performance, and that's why it can limit the power consumption for 8TB drives.

1000Mbps is not 10Gbps, it is 1Gbps, which means you are using 14% of the speed capacity of that specific NVMe SSD drive with the first product you are showing, if I got it right. The last one did better but still is less than 50% of it's capacity.
@matoatlantis
@matoatlantis Год назад
You are saying "1000Mbps", i.e. megabits per second. On the box it says 1000 MBps, so megabytes per second. So it's (1000*8)/1024 ~= 7.82 Gbps. It's still far from 10 Gbps but closer than what you said.

I’ve got me a Sabrent XTRM-Q 1TB which is an enclosure with built in SSD, bought it with my M1 MacMini (512GB SSD). The initial idea was to edit off of it in FinalCut Pro. The speeds I’m getting are 1200 Write and 2500 Read. Wasn’t very smooth there so I ended up using it as fast storage, but I freed up lots of space on the internal SSD. That’s great speeds all the way through. And yes, when I started using the Sabrent it had only that FCPX project on it so plenty of space for all rendering, my project grow to some 300GB while editing, maybe sometimes 400GB but still. My FCPX projects have usually up to 2 camera footage, 4K, I might add titles by the best manufacturers like Motion FX, Leno FX etc, but all this will run smoothly only from internal drive. I’m about to get the Mac Studio Max 64GB and I’ll simply opt for the 2TB right from the start. No mtter how fast all those external stuff can be, I’ve learned they’ll never be able to compete with the internal drives. Thanks for a good video, subbed now, like your other content as well.

I've purchased sheets of thermal pads in various thicknesses from Amazon. They were not expensive. I suspect a 2mm thick pad would work on the ACASIS USB 4.0 m.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure. I ordered one of those cases, and have various sheets of thermal pads. We'll find out in a few days. I have the HUB (connected to a Mac Mini M2 Pro), but I put a Gen3 NVMe in it (4tb Crucial P3) as the HUB can't handle the read/write speed the Gen4 offers. I also connected a Crucial X8 4tb (rated for 1050MB/s) to the HUB, and it works great. I'm only using these drives for general media storage though ('only' 10gbps). I do some music production (amateur at best) and I own A LOT of massive instrument libraries. Although the speed the HUB offers is already very decent, I'm planning to get this Thunderbolt 4 enclosure and put a 4tb Gen4 NVMe in it. If this results in the massive speed boost I expect it to, I will get 1 or 2 more enclosures to put my expanding library collection on.

I've tested both the tbu401 and tbu405 m1. IMHO they both have the same flaw. When looking for M.2 nVME SSDs my experience currently is that four out of five devices offered will be Gen4 and one will be Gen3. The ACASYS enclosures I tested are configured for Gen3 drives with no option to support Gen4 at native speed. The tbu405 that I received from Amazon appeared to be a tbu401 with the covers scored for better heat distribution, it did not include an internal fan nor were there holes to allow air distribution. My testing was exclusively with Samsung 980 Pro 2tb, and consitently only attained Gen3 performance (understandable with the way the ACASYS enclosures are configured). HTH

5:27 You say USB4.0 and Thunderbolt 4 are exactly the same thing. They aren't. Thunderbolt 4 is a superset of USB4. The Acasis box shown in the video doesn't say Thunderbolt 4, it says USB4.0. In various other marketing promotions, Acasis claims Thunderbolt 3 status , not Thunderbolt 4. For NVMe storage and theoretic transfer speed (40Gbps) the distinctions don't matter, but for other things (e.g Display connectivity) they do matter. Bottom line: This Acasis enclosure is NOT a Thunderbolt 4 product.

it might be bcoz you cache got full bro... first you should know how data is transfered and ditributed in memory cells and types of memeore cells you have... i dont think crucial p3 has good amount of cache..may be that why the speed failed after some time..if you see teh speed failed at the very first instance..then it might be due to cable..or port....and file formats have very less impact on transfer speeds...

@@theTechNotice Let me expand on this a bit more, I got the hub around about mid 2021 for the use of my MacBook M1 as it lacked the ports that I wanted to use. I backed their Kickstarter project pretty early on as it seemed to tick all the boxes that I needed. Fast forward to receiving the unit. It was sure looked like the business, however it ran really hot when I initially used it with a 1TB Sabrent Rocket NVME Drive. The Sabrent drive is a Gen 3 which shouldn't get too hot when not in constant use. However the hub was pretty much unbearable to touch after about 20-30 mins plugged into the MacBook with the 65 Watt plugged into the PD passthrough on the hub. So I reached out to Acasis and they refused to refund me, but offered me a partial refund of about £20 for the inconvenience of it being too hot, however they maintained that it was working as intended ? I eventually cut my losses and go rid the hub. Ill never buy from Acasis again from that initial experience from them.

Yeah, placing a Gen 4 M.2 NVMe stick inside a USB 3.1 gen 2 enclosure is OVERKILL to say the least. If anyone is interested in going that route they should save a few coins and get a Gen 3 stick or upgrade to a Thunderbolt 3/4 enclosure. Even then, depending on the setup, you'll get less than half of the potential speed of a M.2 Gen 4 stick which is rated at 7000MB/s. This is what your test showed.
@dushk0
@dushk0 Год назад
It is not. You just need actual usable knowledge to be able to get that. Nobody cares about the made up maximum speeds, you can raise the worst case scenario numbers, though, which is why people use the top tier Extreme Pro SD cards (the ones that cost double the price of the basic Extreme pro) for pro photo/video, unless they use the "Nikon" cards or an SSD enclosure, ofc. I'd rather have a drive that does all data at 500 MBps (impossible with a single drive yet) than one that fluctuates between 30 and 7k.

Great video! I own a Sabrent EC-T3DN Thunderbolt 3 enclosure for 2 NVMe SSDs. I’ve put there a pair of 2TB Seagate Firecuda 510 (PCIe Gen3) that I had in my older MacBooks, and I’m using it in RAID 0. The enclosure is reaching about 2800MB/s write and 2200MB/s read in RAID 0 or 1, but it caps at 1500MB/s on each individual drive. It looks like the NVMe controller is splitting 2 PCIe lanes per drive and that’s why it’s limited to that speed in individual drives setup , but in any RAID configuration is using all 4 PCIe lanes. Each drive individually is much faster than that, with 3450MB/s R/W but for an external enclosure, I’m pretty happy with the current results. One more thing about the drives, even though they’re a bit older, they have a 2600TBW, so I’m not so concerned in using them in RAID 0, and I’m also backing them up on my NAS regularly.

dont buy acasis. its too unstable. will overheat. needs a proper 100w pd. even if you find a way to cool it down, it will bug on you when stressed (any creative work). it works great without ssd in it. if you have two ssd connected to it - it will not allow to copy from one of them, or will show errors. best solution is to have an external ssd enclosure and any other hub.

phison e18 controller seems to work well with this. But close to $200 it is hard to justify the additional speed over 1GB/s enclosure which can be obtained under 20 usd. For ex, FireCuda 520 2TB is just at $180.

Samsung and sabrent both sell optional heat sinks with sabrent even a small one and a large one with pipes! Why arent these enclosure manufacturers simply cutting a big hole in the top for one of those? or leaving clearance for at least the thinner heat sinks? I dont see that case doing very much

It would work very well, but you're paying a lot for too much spec. I'd try something like silicon power US70 2TB model for that, cheaper but still gen4 nvme speeds.

I bought 2 of the TB3/USB4 acasis TB401 enclosures you have, but only one can be used, cant get 2 at the same time. it will disconnect after sleeping. the mac seems to get confused as they both have same intel chipset? or cant deliver enough power, I tried all ports, front and rear and TB hub in monitor. what is the chipset for the 10 in 1 nvme? I assume it is fully compatible with M1 mac and it wakes from sleep without disconnecting? no one wants to reboot just to see the data drive

The ACASIS Hub is limited in speed to 1000, So no point in buying or using an expensive NVMe you're not going to get close. I believe even says in fine print somewhere only going to get 1,000 out of it. All those hubs with NVMe capability are slow. The ACASIS dedicated enclosures however will give you plenty of speed and take advantage of the NVMe capabilities. But as soon as you connect it to the HUB which is connected to your MacBook Pro M1 you lose speed to 1000 again. I'm waiting for a HUB that can take an NVMe and give you full capability in speed 2000 plus. I have both devices you have in the video. I just wish HUB give you the speeds the dedicated enclosure does.

I just bought the Acasis 10-in 1 and so far it seems very unstable. I connected a USB 3.0 HDD and started copying files to my Macbook air. My macbook air charger was connected into the hub and after 10 minutes it lost connection and I got an error message that it stopped copying. I noticed that my laptop was not charging anymore, although it should had been thorugh the hub. So I connected a 20W charger to the hub and I also connected the original charger straight in the macbook. The HDD loses electric connection quite often and my HDD beeps when that happens and for a second the copying stops and then continues. This never happened when the HDD was directly connected to my macmini. I am very dissatisfied. Also the unit was getting very hot, even when I wasn’t moving any files. It got to 56 celsius, which is not good for your ssd in the long term. I will return this enclosure and I would encourage anyone not to buy these enclosures.

the first one sukced the second one is better but you need a power thunderbolt hub with that fast drive to see close to its rated speeds .. so that fast drive is a total waste of money if your not going to use a proper case for it.
