The Best Fish and Chips Ever! EAT DOG FISH PLEASE | How to Catch & Cook The UK Shark Mini Species

This video shows our favourite dad and lad team on yet another adventure this time Sea Fishing in North Wales again, this one actually being two sessions combined.
Visiting Llanfairfechan to target the Bass on both night fishing sessions we get a super alternative to the Bass in the form of our friend and yours the UK Dog Fish or Specifically the Lesser Spotted Cat Shark.
As ever we are happy to catch anything that will take a bait. We dug bait and pumped lugworm before the session and started fishing the beach, the enjoyable sessions followed with us ending with a stunning sunrise behind the mountain from the beach.
We catch lots of fish and have our customary cake and a brew in our fishing campervan, sleeping in our van overnight to ensure we were safe to drive home after our long Sea fishing session.
As a special nod to the under-appreciated Dog Fish, I show you how to Catch & Cook the super fish, showing you how to prepare it by skinning it and then deep frying it for Homemade fish and chips then hopefully showing you that it is an amazing alternative to Cod, Haddock or Pollock and in my opinion is superior to Cod and the other white fish.
Fishing marks and the Postcodes are below along with the what 3 words locations for precise spot finding. You will find more area information about Llanfairfechan in my other videos on the channel.
We do hope you enjoy the video, do ask us any questions you like via comment or email.
Hope you can get out fishing & I hope you have some fantastic, safe fun, Finding Fish too.

When I was young I’d always have rock eel!

Of course rock eel is another name for the sandpapery fisherman's friend. You should still eat it now if you can. I might even use that name for the humble doggy when I catch the next one. Thanks for the comment. Tim & Dave. 🎣

Still time for bass Tim obviously you can't keep them now. Never bothered skinning dogs before but huss I eat quite a bit and very tasty too. Hope the old man is ok. Good news is that my dad is on the mend after his spell in hospital and is home now. All the best Tightlines 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🐟🎣

Your catch and cook was cool for the Huss 😋 glad your Old man is on the mend Ceirion....I know we can occasionally be labelled as hard fishermen but we can't help worrying bout our families especially our oldies 😉 All the best mate.

Not sure if anybody has already mentioned this in the comments, but dogfish was known as rock salmon years ago, chippies used to sell it. Never tried it myself, but I heard good things about the flavour.
@FindingFishUK
@FindingFishUK Год назад
Thanks for your comment Carl, I got told personally that it was very popular once over and although I have not personally seen it near me in any chippies they do still sell Rock & Chips or as you rightly put it Rock Salmon and Chips in a number of places apparently. People/chippies should definitely start selling/cooking it again, I really don't know the reason it has disappeared from the shops but would be nice to see a clearly abundant and tasty fish being sold again widely, got to be cheaper i should imagine too, the price of fish and chips these days is very high ...maybe we need a nationwide ad campaign to get Dog Fish back on our menus. You should definitely try it though Carl if you can. Thanks for the cool comment pal all the best.🎣

Thanks Peter I do like to show as much venue info as I can think of at time of editing and wanted to use my touchscreen for something fun instead of work all the time so it found its way into my videos. We regard bass as such a treat so yeah shame, but makes when we do get them all the more special. Or at least we think so. Thanks so much for the cool comment all the best pal. Tim & Dave

Great to see someone championing the humble dogfish as a great edible fish. I'm a blockman in a fish factory, sadly the thousands of doggies that come in off of landings all go back out as pot bait. Such a waste.
@FindingFishUK
@FindingFishUK Год назад
I'm desperately thankful they atleast go back to the sea even if as pot bait, but dogfish is such an underrated eating fish. I cant help but love the humble Doggie. You must see some sights in your job (good & bad) Thanks so much for watching and the comment pal. All the best Jon.

You know our Welsh cakes might not be worth the wait and also you can't blame me its my dad needs pull him baking finger out, also no not my dads recipe or I'd have slapped my own hands for making a budget scone, just was using up some ingredients I had left in the cupboard tasted good non the less, doggy and chips is an underrated meal all I can do is take a horse to water i cant make it drink (or cook Doggy and chips) but we all should. Thanks Ian pal, yeah some really nice memories recorded on that trip seaside sunrises of that quality are few and far between when you live inland like us, the old man is back to fighting fit ta for asking I'm totally on the same page as you with the humble doggie, it gets a bad rap but a high place on a blank sheet and i wonder how many matches doggies have won alone 🤷‍♂️...the way it is I guess, we may have been brainwashed into regarding the other fish species as superior to the doggy but not me and luckily not others too like yourself. All the best Ian. Tim & Dave.

@FindingFishUK Год назад
Thanks Brian, as i say in the video they are great, you should try it 100% I'd say it probably takes a little longer than Cod or Haddock to cook ...so if its a first time cook ..cook it for longer than cod but I always do a test piece to get the bigger sizes perfect, it holds well in the oven too once fried and doesn't dry out like cod can do when re dunked to get the batter crunchy again. Thanks for the cool comment again Brian all the best to you pal.

Thats amazing, isn't life all about chance? (fishing definitely is so why should my videos be any different) joking aside glad you found the vid and that your gonna try it, fresh is best and cook it longer than you would a softer fleshed fish like Cod or Pollock I don't think you'll be disappointed it's also very nice in a curry. What a great comment to read!! Thank you so much. I am pleased you have found our video and are going to try the much under-rated Dogfish/Rock Salmon. In our opinion, you won't be disappointed, we cook it just like Cod and think it out performs Cod for taste everytime. Cod is mainly meat with much less taste than DogFish. You will find that DogFish has all the meaty elements of White fish but has much more taste. We decided to try it and there is no going back now its a staple freezer fish for us now. bon appetite 😋 👍🎣

You must try dogfish it's delicious 😋 if you like a good fish and chips, it's up there with em... the cakes were honestly just a quick use up what baking stuff I had in the cupboard recipe, they were tasty non the less and although not followed to the T was a simple scone recipe from online i adapted to suite the lack of ingredients I actually had lol. You should give it a go nothing to loose except your figure 😉... My dads the proper baker between us just a little offering of my own. Your comments are always great Carl👍 All the best. 🎣🐕🍰

I always keep dogfish if they are a decent size, taste nice but bloody tough to skin.
@FindingFishUK
@FindingFishUK 11 месяцев назад
I totally agree a decent size Dogfish is as prized as any other fish for me now. They can be tough to skin but a decent "sharp' knife to get the skin started away from the meat and slowly but surely tugging all this with gloves on does the trick. In my opinion how easy they are to debone/decartalage after being skinned to have zero bones is easier than the prep needed pin boning other fish I think. Thanks for the comment and all the best pal. Tim & Dave.

I've seen bass caught on cold winter days in Jan & Feb and many bass coming out at the moment, more a case of in the past coming into November when it cools off bass have been fewer and further between for us personally but to be honest in the video i might of been trying to make excuses why we didn't catch any bass lol...when the same beach not long before this session produced loads...hey everyday can be a school day and that's fishing. Thanks for the comment and all the best pal. Tightlines.

@@FindingFishUK I'll admit I wasn't using bait though, fish lures mostly. Try Pensarn beach mate if they seem to have moved off from Llanfairfechan. Same as you're doing in this video using freshly pumped Lugworm. Blow lug will work too as there's quite a lot of them there. Just use what's present at the particular beach you're on. Razorfish is a good bait at Llanfairfechan. Never eaten Dogfish but I have eaten Bull Huss and that was delicious.
@FindingFishUK
@FindingFishUK Год назад
@@richardjones2811 no need to reveal you used lures like its a confession pal, lure fishing is a skill for sure so my extra kudos to you. Thanks for the razor tip, the fish might know there's a ban on collecting razors on that beach so might be why they love them more lol 😆 (my jokes are bad sorry) if you like Huss, dog fish is very similar just obviously smaller in most cases and are a tad easier to catch too than the Bull 😉 thanks for all the info pal have a good one and Tightlines.
@richardjones2811
@richardjones2811 Год назад
@@FindingFishUK You're too kind for the kudos for lure fishing. It's like second nature now for me and much more selective to catch a target species. Yes razors are banned from being collected there thanks to the large influx of Chinese decimating the population there 😏. Collect the Razors at a different beach and use them at Llanfair, that's what I do to keep this side of the law. Tight lines to you too buddy and all the best for the next vid 👍

As i said on another channel,we should have a ban on other fish species say maybe every third year and solely take dogfish. It would give other species a better chance as well as thinning the dogfish out.
@FindingFishUK
@FindingFishUK Год назад
Thanks for the comment, very good point well made, my opinion will likely always be that rod & line Anglers cant impact stocks of any species realistically speaking and i do take other species to eat, but if we all took more Dog Fish as its so much more sustainable i think all would win as a result. Thanks for watching all the best.

Dont they sell dogfish in the London area and call it Rock Salmon ?
@FindingFishUK
@FindingFishUK Год назад
Thanks for your comment James and yes I think it is on more menus in the south of our country but upon reading a little online "rock Salmon" as its referred to can actually be Huss, Spurdog or Smooth Hound. I think it might be a case of getting the most meat from it to make most money i guess ....which I would suggest would make the Huss or Spurdog the more likely fish on the menus and in my eyes Huss, SmoothHound and Spurdog are not very sustainable. In fact endangered so might not be anymore so I'd say mostly likley Huss But in my opinion we all (including restaurants) should eat the humble Dog Fish it is easy to catch, plenty of them and Tastes great. Super sustainable. Thanks for your comment and the watch pal. All the best.
