To the young mixing engineers who feel overwhelm bout the number of plugins out there, just remember you can do a perfectly fine mix with 2 plugins that are already in your DAW. An EQ and a compressor. Matter of fact, sometimes you dont even need those plugins if your signal was recorded in a great studio/room. You can EQ without a plugin simply by using microphone techniques like, stepping away from the mic during a loud section... You can compress without a compressor using volume automation. Your mix quality is dependent on - The artist recording skills and performance 50% - Instrument arrangement. Panning, volume, cut edit 40% - Your plugins 10% Try do most things manually so you dont use too many plugins that will take away processing power. Cheers.

The bax-ter is based on a hardware parallel eq. Parallel eqs are great for busses or on the master as it isn’t a shelf and doesn’t completely mess with the phase
@Barnet310
@Barnet310 4 года назад
You should be careful using colouring direct eqs on busses and the master as it can make elements of your mix all have the same tone which when overused can make your music sound bland and reduces tonal dynamics

Could you make a video showing the differences between stock plugins and similar third party plugins, and why one might be preferred over another? For example, if I have a stock EQ and a nice third party EQ and I make the same boost on both, it can be hard for me to tell the difference and make a decision on which one sounds better.
@inthemix
@inthemix 4 года назад
I have a small video series showing some differences between stock and “pro” plugins. Try a search for them on my page. Usually the differences are a much improved workflow and in the case if reverbs and EQs, much greater variety in sounds, tones and colour due to advanced sampling and programming technology

Thanks for the recommendations. I like the TDR stuff so much I bought the GE's a while back. Still learning how to use them, there's just so much under the hood. Your point about EQ not being about frequency and amplitude only is spot on. For a long time I thought that, but now I try my best not to use a parametric EQ for anything but high passing when needed. I've found that the right combo of EQ and compressor plugins can even tame weird resonances or slightly bad recordings. So now, instead of reaching first for my FF Pro-Q3 I tend to go for Slick EQ or something with more character to shape the sound, then do my subtractive EQ and any additional FX to achieve the balance and space I'm looking for. One thing I'm not impressed with is the fact that many companies are forcing you to install a program that manages your installed plugins. I really just want to download the plugin and not put anymore bloatware on my machine. I realize they do this because it gives them more protection against piracy, but if everyone does this eventually our computers are going to be full of management programs.

Warning. The Acustica Audio is a REAL hog on the cpu power. But man does it sound good! If you cant use it because it sucks up to much pc-brain power then export a wave file, put it into a new project and then apply it there. That plugin alone on my master breathed new life into a track i have. So to put it in context i had too many elements in the song, and i really wanted to make them all audible. So i did a lot of EQ, and everything became extremely clear. But suddenly there was no buttom or real "top". So it was waaaay to flat sounding. I could not get it to work with anything i tired, and changing the eq would just make things muddy again. Removing elements was out of the picture. AND THEN i came across this epic eq. GENIUS piece of software. And its free..... Wtf.

You should *Really* review the Airwindows plugins. It's one of *THE MOST underrated* companies out there. It's about 290 plugins made by this one guy who pours every bit of his singular energy into creating astoundingly high quality Saturators, Distorions, EQs, Comressors, and more. No brand names, no gimmicks. The best part: most of them are FREE! This fact comes with the drawback that the plugins literally do not have UIs and are always a series of unskinned sliders, and the sheer number of plugins as well as the depth of his website is a bit daunting, and so the plugins are not as popular as many big names. You mustn't be fooled by this however, as several people say the plugins get *incredibly* close to their real life counterparts. In otherwords, he's great at plugins, not great at marketing. I'd love to hear your take on them, which ones stad out to you, which are the most essential (as well as give the Airwindows name a bigger crowd, as I think such a good quality group of plugins should be seeing a wider audience, and such a great guy should as well) It'd be awesome if you took a review into consideration. Sorry for the ramble, and extra sorr if I seemed a bit pushy.

There is an interesting patcher preset you can stick on your master called mid/side. Comes with 2 limiters, but you can swap them out for EQ's or any FX chain you can dream of for some funky effects.
