I pulled my true garlic yesterday, a french variety, HUGE, pleasent surprise since some of the onions had got leaf miner early, hit them with compost tea and liquid IMO which seemed to stop the miner in it's tracks, good show, cheers Tel

what is liquid IMO please? Thank you 🙂
@glassbackdiy3949
@glassbackdiy3949 Месяц назад
@@bewoodford2807 Liquid Indiginous Microrganisms, collect some leaf duff from the oldest woodland nearby, just scrape off the dry stuff and collect a few handfuls of the top 2" of decaying leaf matter underneath (you can also use good thermophillic compost, I use both) get a barrel/large bin and fill with water, suspend the leaf duff/compost in an old sock/tights/mesh bag with 2 x crushed boiled potatoes in the top of the container, massage the bag to break up the potato, add 1g per liter rock salt, (or natural sea salt if you're not in the UK where they fill yellow roadside bins with rocksalt, or use seawater diluted 25:1 for the size of container) give it a stir and leave it until you see foam forming on the top, ideally you will use it when maximum foam is forming, it will start off with a few bubbles, rise to max, and then foam will peter out, it's temp dependant so anywhere from ~3 days to ~7days, colder = longer, dilute 10:1 and apply as a soil soak from a watering can, the microrganisms will feed on the carbohydrates from the potato and absorb minerals from the sea salt, it's a cheap way to remineralize soil and add soil biology, avoid using chemicals.

My garlic I planted in the fall got decimated by wet and cold (mushy). The ones I planted in the ploy in tubs froze 🤦‍♀️. The ones outside I think I pulled a bit too early they are small and didn’t split but usable 👍. The 8 hardneck have curling scapes so I’ll harvest soon. They look fantastic. Where I planted mine was flooded a few times I thought they'd rot off so was surprised when they popped up and grew. They got hit by rust quite bad though the stems looked a decent size but the bulbs were quite small. they all split and are useable but just a disappointing size. I normally keep the largest for planting but considering replacing them this year with new in case the rust spores stick around with the plants and also the smaller cloves may give smaller harvests anyway next year.
@terrykingsallotmentgardening
@terrykingsallotmentgardening Месяц назад
@philhopkinson6557 I don't normally suffer with rust on my garlic, but this season it does look like everyone suffered in some form or another and white rot was a major problem, if yours grew at all then they will be used to these conditions so personally I would still save some and buy some new ones to plant later on in the year.

Will unsplit (ordinary) garlic keep well enough to sow again in Autumn. And seeing as you would be starting with what is in effect a very large single clove, does that mean you are likely to get a larger bulb when it comes to harvesting the following year?
@terrykingsallotmentgardening
@terrykingsallotmentgardening Месяц назад

@terrykingsallotmentgardening
@terrykingsallotmentgardening Месяц назад
@funnysods the scapes SHOULD do a loop then you know the bulbs are ready, the scapes can be eaten. Depending on your weather you can harvest now before they rot or if you still have good green growth ends leave them another week. Saves some cloves to plant again in October.
