Welcome to our inaugural episode of drink. This channel is dedicated to bringing you the best recipes for classic, modern classic and culinary cocktails presented by some of the top bartenders in Los Angeles. We also aim on teaching you guys technique, which is probably the most important thing in making drinks, anybody can follow a recipe, but the technique of building them is what makes a good drink truly great.
The cocktail is presented by Leandro DiMonriva head bartender of Cole's French dip in downtown Los Angeles. Leandro has been working on and perfecting the art of classic cocktails for the past seven years and he will be the bartender presenting the classics on this channel.
We start with a crowd pleaser, the Gin Gimlet. This recipe is the most relevant to date, giving you a cocktail that is a perfect balance between citrus, sugar and of course gin.
Although the Gin Gimlet was published in Harry Craddock's The Savoy Cocktail Book from which it gained noteriety, the drink actually traces it's history back further to the British Royal Navy who were using lime juice to ward off scurvy. The Gimlet was purportedly invented by Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Desmond Gimlette who mixed the concoction to make the lime rations more palatable for his crew. Acting as doctor for the superior officers, mixed the lime with sugar and gin to mask the bitter taste. Unlike their superior officers, the regular naval sailor was given rum rations which they would also mix with sugar and lime, which came to be known as "grog". That mixture finds it's origins in the english trading vessels of 14th century England and gave birth to another famous cocktail which we will revisit in another episode.
Here's the gear I use in the episode:
Barfly Graduated Jigger: amzn.to/2r3slt2
Barfly Shaking Set: amzn.to/2OYG0w4
Barfly Hawthorn Strainer: amzn.to/2OkFZ8v
Barfly Fine Strainer: amzn.to/2RaFkoS
Here's The Specs:
.75oz Fresh Lime Juice
.75oz Simple Syrup
2oz Gin
Preparation notes:
First you're going to want to select a citrus forward Gin such as beefeater or Plymouth. Too much Juniper can kill this cocktail.
Add ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake for 10 to 15 seconds
then strain into a Coupe or Cocktail glass.
Garnish with a Lime Wheel.
Please feel free to comment, we read them all and if any of you have questions we would be happy to answer them!

This is well done! I prefer my gimlet a bit more dry because I want to enjoy the taste of the gin and still get a bit of sweet lime. So, I use 2oz of gin and 2 bar spoons (2 tsp) of Rose’s Lime Cordial. Of course, you can also use fresh lime juice and simple syrup but keep the portions small (1 bar spoon or 1 tsp each). Stir rapidly for thirty seconds with ice. I don’t shake. Serve it over ice in a chilled lowball glass with a twist of lime. It makes for a very fresh and crisp drink. 2:oz London Dry Gin 2 tsp Rose’s Lime Cordial (or 1 tsp of simple syrup and 1 tsp of lime juice. Stir thirty seconds with ice. Serve over ice in a chilled glass with a twist of lime. I also like to rub the lime around the edge of the glass before dropping it into the drink. Repeat and enjoy.

I scrolled down your whole YT channel in order to watch the very first episode. I bet that nowadays you won't show up such practices as moving the ice to the tin with your hand, or dipping a finger in the cocktail. :D Someone could call me a picky bastard, but my opinion is that these details are important when one's serving cocktails, even if it's on YT and the cocktail is made just for yourself. Cheers!

My understanding of the history was that the Rose's Lime cordial product was originally created to be a shelf-stable lime juice that could survive long voyages at sea (scurvy prevention and all). The addition of gin was done in order to make it palatable, as Rose's Lime by itself is not exactly a smooth beverage, and I believe the name "Gimlet" comes from the name of an admiral in the Royal Navy who added lime cordial to gin rations to prevent scurvy among his men. The Savoy book specifically favors Rose's Lime, but the trend towards using fresh ingredients is a thing with modern cocktail culture. To be honest, I kind of like it both ways, though I'm preferential to the Delilah (aka White Lady) if we're going to go with fresh lime juice. Likewise, I wouldn't consider a cordial for a Delilah, but I actually rather like the Gimlet with a cordial. Also, the HFCS the lime cordials, as I understand, is an American thing simply because corn subsidies make it so cheap, but the same products in most other countries use regular old sugar. There really isn't any evidence whatsoever to support the idea that HFCS is any more dangerous than regular old sucrose (which is to say that they're both equally awful), but one thing you can say is that there is a distinct flavor difference.

I know a lot can be said about how much you've progressed in terms of being comfortable, and like legit that is amazing (I can't remember what drink it was but there was one where you kept sorta trailing off). BUT. I wish you included more technical tips on your modern videos! Steve the Bartender is great (arguably better) at providing straight up recipes, but you really shine when you show your expertise and training. If you're worried about being repetitive to long-time viewers, 1) don't, we'll still watch anyway, 2) you can also link to dedicated 'technique' videos, like with your stirring video, 3) just include some Marius banter and that will make up for it, cause all the long time viewers love seeing some Marius banter. I think what separates you from the other cocktail channels is that you really get into the nitty gritty of the *technique*, and I really want you to keep that identity. After all, you are the EDUCATED Barfly.

confusedwhale , thanks for the recommendation! I’ll admit I still have A LOT of gins to try, and Botanist is one of them. I don’t know if I mentioned this elsewhere, but I also like to use this formula with basil. Like a gin basil smash, but more of a “gin basil gimlet” if that’s a thing. Start with muddled basil leaves, then add the gin, lime juice, and simple syrup with the proportions I listed above. Delicious!

@_beaurobinson

You can always add more lime, but that's going to make a sour drink. Ice is not only to cool the drink, but to dilute it as well so it depends on what you're going for. Hope this helped.

What do you think about using lime cordial instead of lime juice + simple syrup? Most recipes seem to call for the former noting that it is different from the combination
@TheEducatedBarfly
@TheEducatedBarfly 6 лет назад
I guess it would greatly depend on the lime cordial recipe and what the ratio of Lime to sugar would be. That would determine whether or not the drink would be balanced. Lime cordial is basically lime pre-mixed with sugar and usually a little vodka (or Gin) as a preservative.

I'd seen a recipe on reddit recently that makes a lime cordial using lime zest and a bit of powdered citric acid. I tried my hand at making one and I can see a clear difference in taste - the zest and acid create a different, almost slightly bitter edge with a more tart bite than just lime and simple.

Are talking a typical round inflatable kiddie pool? An average kiddie pool at 5 foot diameter and 1 foot deep holds approx 160 gallons (605 Liters). Each Gimlet is 4.5oz, so it would take 4,551 Gimlet's to fill a kiddie pool, but you probably wouldn't want to fill it completely.

A Vodka Gimlet is called a Kamikazi, and they're better as a shot than a cocktail. A vodka Martini would be just flat and kinda lifeless, and absolutely love vodka cocktails when done right. A Martini is supposed to feature the spirit like an Old Fashioned features its whiskey, and a vodka's best trait is its neutral flavor. If you're trying to show off the vermouth then sure, but otherwise, gin is the way to go.

I had just poured myself a gimlet before switching on this video. I made a stock sugar syrup from water, granulated sugar and a little acacia honey, to which I added the grated zest and juice of a lime. I brought this to the boil, simmered it for five minutes then strained it into a jug to let it cool. Once it was cool I placed the jug into the freezer for a couple of hours until it turned into an icy slush. I then poured the lime slush into a measure of Tanqueray 43% gin from the bottle I keep in the freezer. It is utterly sumptuous.
