Great topic! I'm glad you brought up the mc 101! I absolutely love mine. It's such an underrated device with a lot of strengths. I will say the look and tiny screen throws many off but it has been one of my favorite devices to take anywhere with me, with a great battery life, and also can be used as a sequencer too!

You’re right, the Circuit Tracks is a great box, and for many reasons! So portable, and the two sequencer lanes with audio back in really enhances it!! Even having one, I’m probably going to treat myself to an MC-707 before the end of the year (was trying to hold off until January, but may not make it!). It just seems like it has a great workflow to get into music-making quickly and easily.

Great video with a lot of good experience shared. I'm in the process of rebuilding my studio after a few decades off and budget is #1 consideration. So far my primary devices are model:samples, model:cycles (elektron FTW!), 1010 bluebox, and a behringer neutron. I'm thinking there's a space to be filled and the circuit tracks is probably closest to fill it in the price range I'm looking at. Something capable of polyphony and controlling an iPad soft synth. Maybe I'll give in and move to another elektron box like a digitakt? We shall see.....Regardless, I'm subbing now and will definitely be viewing more videos to pick up on your wisdom. @@SURCOlive I think it is the best for someone who wants a workflow that supports vocals but I see it as a sketch pad that makes you do full songs pretty fast as it kind of guides you through all steps. I do not think any groove box is perfect yet, but I feel that maybe the Maschine would be even easier to work with but I miss the vocal support on that one. But the MV1 is the all-in-one box you should test. You did not say much about the 101 that is so portable and lightweight with batteries. Again, it feels like most are impressed with the Deluge and the Maschine but the biggest issues most have is that they do not learn one super well, if you learn how to use one super well, that will make the whole difference

The assignable crossfader, the looping, the multiple routing possibilities for external gear depending on the setup of the day... all reasons I love it. I really use them for different things. nice vid surco, as always. I am looking for a groovebox where I can program melodies (lead/bass) controlling the size of the notes (wholes,1/2 1/4 etc), and visulaize it as a kind of piano roll or some sort of it, I have in my short list the deluge and the polyend tracker. Is there any other option that is not just a sequencer?, maybe the maschine +, but the size look biger than dely and polyend tracker
@SURCOlive
@SURCOlive Год назад
Tracker and Deluge are not very 'visual' like a piano roll. (Deluge is better, but not for seeing different note lengths at the same time). If that piano roll visualization is important you might want to look at the Maschine+ or the MPC series (One, Live, etc). They have true piano roll visualization. If seeing it isn't important, the Deluge is awesome as are the Elektron sequencers. Thanks for watching!

Nicely summarised. I’m also curious about the Akai Force and how it fits into the rest of the lineup. From what I’ve seen, even though it seems to use the same underlying OS as the MPCs, the workflow is very different. Thanks for an outstanding video! I'm in the market for a groovebox and I'm trying to decide which one. Deluge has been no. 1 so far but the hassle with import makes me doubt. So I'm assessing possible alternatives. One question that I have is why Analog Rytm never or almost never is mentioned. Seems like a very capable possible centerpiece. Would you steer away from it? All in all the Elektron gear seems like it could well be the gear I'm looking for. My music is basically electronic & techno.
@SURCOlive
@SURCOlive 2 года назад
SO I am a huge Elektron nerd. I LOVE my Analog Rytm and it is one piece of gear I will never get rid of. For techno, it could be a centerpiece, but it is not really designed to be a central controller of other gear. It can, but it is not as easy or full featured as a lot of the other Elektron boxes for sequencing outboard gear. Devices like the Digitakt for example have 8 dedicated MIDI tracks for sequencing outboard gear, and the functionality is easier to access anymore in depth. The RYTM has 8 internal synths and the ability to layer samples with synths per track. It is my favorite drum machine by a long shot, but would be a bit clunky as a centerpiece. Deluge on the other hand is amazing as a center piece. virtually unlimited tracks, easy swapping from audio to MIDI tracks, connectivity, great sequencer. It is another piece of kit I'll never get rid of, but for very different reasons. It is my main sketch pad and could also be the centerpiece of a full setup. Of the boxes you mentioned, Elektron or Deluge are all solid. Within Elektron for a centerpiece, I would say Digitakt or Octatrack depending on your needs and workflow. Deluge is right there too. All within a couple hundred dollars of each other too. You can't go wrong with any of them. Thanks so much for watching!

@@SURCOlive Hopefully I can cut this short.... I love almost ALL genres of music. I grew up in Puerto Rico with musicians within my family/friends circles. Always loved music/dancing. Wanted to learn several instruments, yet, my studies/jobs took it me away for many years. A couple of years prior to my retirement purchased several DJ controllers and enjoyed myself like crazy, just for fun! The last several years have really done a deep dive, thanks to RU-vid, music genres and available devices. I currently have a Minilogue XD, Electribe 2, ZOIA, Modal Skulpt SE, Volca Drums, NTS-1, several KB's & controllers, and still have my DJ (DDJ-RZX, etc..) gear. Still in the explorations on to what to focus on. Sorry for length of story, thought I'd share some background. The most I would see is developing some songs over the long haul. Certainly love music with drums. Was thinking a combo of maybe Deluge & TR-8S, or something like that.
@SURCOlive
@SURCOlive 2 года назад
Great to know all of this. As I mentioned in the video, genre plays an important role. People interested in techno and house are better served with deep sequencers that specialize in randomization and pattern building like the Electron Boxes or Deluge. If you are interested in performing drums on pads, I would go for something like one of the MPCs. As a beginner, having a screen where you can see what is going in or 'knob per function; so everything is on the surface would likely be helpful. Deluge is deep, but there isn't much feedback for someone that doesn't know what is happening 'under the hood'. MPCs are best for screen and visual feedback with ELektrons coming a bit behind. When looking for a central brain it is good to consider the ability to connect to different gear. Full size DIN MIDI ports allow for connections without dongles. CV/Gate allows for connections to modular, and USB can be used to connect some devices using a midi host (found internally in the MPCs and Maschine+). Sorry for the long explanation, but one of the beautiful things is that there is not one size fits all. Every setup can be customized to match the preferences of the user. I hope this helps and doesn't further cloud the decision process. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with, and for sure let me know what you end up creating! Thanks so much for watching!

If you run it off a battery, it basically turns it into a smaller Live. Plus I would put the Roland MV1 on the DAW-in-a-Box since it is very much designed to record audio along with sequencing. Interesting that you didn’t mention the SP 404 or the OPz.
@SURCOlive
@SURCOlive 2 года назад
Agreed with all of this. There were a lot of boxes that didn't make the cut, and I needed to limit the criteria of each category to keep from making a 6 hour video. Portable all had to have internal battery, so the One didn't fit there. SP404 has no synth capabilities and a very limited sequencer, so I left it out for that. It would easily win a sampler battle though. :) Thanks for watching!

@@SURCOlive Makes sense. I make a lot of hip hop so the lack of synth wouldn't be a huge deal, but I understand the internal battery distinction. I've honestly not taken my One out of the house with the battery. But its great for moving room to room if you can make sure the battery stays attached. I also think that a synth in a box is cool for the dedicated buttons but I don't think the quality will continue to warrant the added price when you can have 100 synths on your phone or iPad that you already carry around. iPad Pro is probably the best portable groovebox, pound for pound. Thanks for the response.

For sure. As I mentioned in the vid it really comes down to what you make and what workflow you enjoy. I didn't include iPads for the same reason I didn't include laptops. For me the #1 requirement for something to be a 'groove box' is that is has to be a dedicated instrument. As a rule I disqualify anything you can check your email on. ;) Thanks for watching, and keep making the music you love the way you love to make it. There are no rules. :)

I have watched so many videos on grooveboxes that my conclusion can only be: There is no best groovebox for me out there 🙃 It feels like there are only two scenarios. Scenario 1: they don't do everything I need them to do: they are good at sampling, but complex sequencing is tedious, they are good at sequencing but not at sampling, or they don't do polyphony, or no midi etc. And the other option: Feature creep and convoluted workflows to the point that I might as well use a proper DAW? The closest I've come to what I'm looking for is an iPad and AUM with a Launchpad Pro, but of course it's dongle hell as soon as I want to record something external.

I would agree that the ‘ultimate all in one’ doesn’t exist and a DAW is still the only real solution for doing everything well. That said, I have found that prioritizing into workflow needs and wants helps me select gear. Sequencing is a top priority for me, so I lean toward Elektron gear. If sampling and sample manipulation was my priority, I would absolutely go MPC. Maschine+ is as close as I have seen to an all in one, but there are still compromises. Thank you so much for watching!

I don’t see many DAW less multitrack recorder that can replace final step of recording everything on separate tracks with options of multiple takes, simple edits, copy paste. The only thing I found being close to it is either 1010music bluebox (but it still need some firmware updates to do it well) or deluge and it’s audio clips that can be also used in arranger. Zoom live tracks are only good for recording your live performance only once then it’s really forcing you to go to DAW, no midi sync, and destructive overdub Tascam Model 12 got midi but not sure is it for recording sync. Am I missing any devices that can do that ? Thanks for the love! I get where you are. My advice would be to figure out what you are looking for this tool to do. That will inform all of your decisions. Are you looking for one box that does it all? (spoiler- it doesn't exist) Are you looking for amazing synth for sound design? Are you looking for the best sequencing of internal and external gear? Are you looking to produce? Perform live? All of these answers will drive the decision. I had a Maschine + and sold it. I had an OP-1 and sold it. Same with a dozen other groove boxes. Finally I realized I was looking for a sketch pad for production ideas that was portable enough to take with me anywhere, but could be easily integrated back into my studio to finish the ideas. I chose the Deluge. I also realized that for my live setup I needed 'specialists' to each do a certain job. Some might be called groove boxes, but that is not at all how I use them. Sorry for the long response... To keep it simple, begin with the end in mind. That will illuminate the path. Thanks so much for watching!!

My issue is I find the 4 track limit difficult to work around. I spend a lot of time moving things down tape to mix down later. Maybe I'm just inexperienced. I feel like I get loops with the op-1, not songs. The reason the deliuge has my eye is because I feel I would layer and add and layer and add without creative interruptions of worrying about track limits. When I watch someone's set on RU-vid simply by unmuting and muting tracks, in all types of orders, that is really cool to me. I feel it would free me. I don't mind using a daw at the end, but with the op-1 I don't feel I get close to the end. And yes, external midi synths, (though I just have volca stuff currently) is appealing to me. No live stuff likely Non professional Just fun sketches that can get farther along. It may seem weird, but when I play something I made for my family it's like a 2 second listen. Hi I found your Video very helpful but do have some questions if you have the time. I am a home studio composer and writer and have been playing, and working with DAWs for many years now but I am trying to Modify the way that I write music. (I won't bore you with a life story just get to the Point. I am trying to get more spontaneous workflow into my writing so I can Jam out Ideas in a more natural way. Everything you do in a DAW has to be planned in advance from guitar performances to keyboard to synth and drums. Even with midi control you still have to decide in advance what you want to do Spontaneously so you can map the right controls. I am trying to set up and outboard side to what I do so I can be more hands on with writing music so I am working in that direction. While researching this I have watched a lot of DAWless Jams and noticed the use of groove boxes to activate scenes and sent on the fly messages to pieces of gear that fascinates me and is definitely something I could use. I am running guitars and Vocals and miced instruments through loopers in a similar way. But the groovebox concept is a very deep well. Alot of what they do I can do better inside the DAW and don't need to be able to dive deep into sound editing. I want to be able to capture ideas (a scetchbook if you will) in a more Live setting. But figuring out how best to achieve this without spending alot of money on things I don't need and will never use is difficult to figure out. I need to get each individual track into Cubase. To work on once I have the tracks figured out. Any advice you could offer would be helpful. Thanks Douglas
@SURCOlive
@SURCOlive Год назад
Sounds like loopers or multi track sampler is what you are looking for. Groove boxes need to be set up as much (or more) than a DAW to get the most out of them. The most spontaneous to get external instruments in seems to be what you are doing. A groove box might be a nice accompaniment or a way to use the samples you record. If you do go the groove box route, I would look at one that is great for sampling and sample editing. For me that would be the MPC line. Thanks so much for watching!

I already own an OP-1, but I like the sounds it makes more than it being the "centerpiece". I'd like something full featured yet portable that I can use to turn out as complete of a track as possible. MPC Live 2 seems great, but I won't really be making hip hop or finger drumming. I'm more into the techno, synthwave, glitchy realms. Budget isn't too big of an issue. I'd love a great sequencer and clear workflow. I thought the Polyend Tracker was going to be great for me, but seems too limited and underpowered. Elektron gear always looks great, but not sure if they are too complicated for me. Same with the Deluge. I want to throw my OP-1 (mostly for sound generation), a Empress Effects Zoia (for effects processing), and the unnamed (center)piece of kit (for sequencing, recording, editing, sampling, performing), into one of my many sizes of bags and be able to sit wherever I'm at and go to town. @@SURCOlive I use it for ambient music. I think the sequencer is the most powerful of all the groove box. Synths are not the best but you still get plenty of note polyphony. There are some unique features like the tape track. And the fact that you can use any (almost any) of the 16 tracks as midi tracks with 16 assignable knobs for each track makes it an incredible controller. I mainly use it with my iPad and AUM. This way you can sequence any synths. Easy to connect through usb-c (or Bluetooth if you don’t need the audio). You can record everything coming out from the op-z directly through usb in any of your daw. There are some drawbacks tough: 16 steps per pattern (but you can chain them or apply a multiplier get longer patterns), motion sequencing that is tied to the steps and results in non smooth parameter changes. But I think that is also the case with Elektron gears.

@ChristopheTornieri 2 года назад
@@SURCOlive You basically get the same note (trigger) probability that you get on the Elektron or Deluge but you also get what TE call the step component. So you can also apply random (or pseudo random) changes to any of your steps. For instance, you can add some rolls on any of your steps but have it only trigger every two loop. Or you can add pitch, velocity variation. Basically you can apply the same probability technique not only to notes but also to the parameter locks and the step components. You can’t do that with the deluge or the circuit tracks. And I don’t think you can do that to the Elektron gears either. There is also the punch in effects you can apply live or sequence. The fact that the fx have their own tracks mean you can run sequences with different length and speed on the fx tracks creating really interesting evolving tracks. You also get video sequencing (if you are into this). It is not perfect. For me mainly the issues I already mentioned but for its size and battery life, it is pretty unbeatable. I also have a circuit tracks. It is cool but two synth tracks is really not enough and only 1 note polyphony on the sample tracks (two on the op-z). The best think about the CT is its synth and memory.
