14 year old 3 stripe white belt here. thank you SO much for posting these types of vids! i tapped out an older 4 stripe blue belt with some of the techniques i learned from you! tysm ❤
I was a brand new blue belt - no stripes and just drowning in technique. I was messing with some open guards and barely knew anything. I didn't know anything about X guard except the "trip lift sweep" and I barely knew that. One night we had this visiting professor - He was pretty hard core, and real hard to please. He was watching me roll and he kinda starts narrating what's going on. My opponent stands and I go to De La Riva. And so this guy is like.... OK, OK we got some open guard going over here, we got some De La Riva. Then the other guy starts passing it and he's like - OK, we got a pass, here we go... Then I go to X guard and all of a sudden he starts getting really excited...X guard, X guard, and then I sweep the guy. He starts hyping me up like it's Oprah saying - This guy needs a stripe, this guy needs a stripe, he's not a slick brand new blue belt with that, he needs a stripe right now - and he ran over to the desk and was like - where's the tape I got to give this guy a stripe right now... and he gave me a stripe on the spot.
Coach Jordan you have become my favorite RU-vid BJJ instructor. You are also the ONLY modern practitioner that correctly called that position a SADDLE, which was it's original name before Eddie bravo or John Danaher. Thank you.
I've been using xguard more in my game recently and I think I like it a lot more than de la riva or any other guard. This video is great because sometimes I forget which sweeps are available. Thank you!
I've have been using the Xguard effectively since 2007 but this variations that you are showing in this video is going to improve my Xguard drastically. Good video!
Hey 👋🏾 Jordan can you do a video on the offensive and defensive positions in grappling the most common ones maybe how you link those together for a rolling strategy. I get lost with 3/4 mount, dope , head quarters and stuff like that. Great videos btw keep up the good work.
cool! I've been working on De La Riva for a minute now and just realised that I always end up in some variation of the X guard when my opponent grip fights my feet! Will be working on the basics that you're showing here. Good stuff man!
Love the video. X/single leg X I’ve been in love with since I was a higher white belt, and through my blue stages. Don’t think I’ll ever abandon this one. Video showed some great nuance though!
Perfect timing- my coach recently said X guard is useless in No Gi but great in Gi. Curious to watch this and get your take. Saving this for after work.
The go behind I have heard coaches refer to as sneaking out the back door. More common when escaping from underneath a high mount but still the same technique
Yes I agree, X guard is very strong because it is very versatile in the meta, nice entries and nice options, and it works against mostly every people even if they are strong or big
Would you mind making a video about how new white belts can protect themselves from being injured while sparring with other new white belts who don't know what the F$&K they are doing and conflate force with technique? Thank you SO MUCH! Love the videos!
As you continue to explore CLA, it would be awesome if you could go into some invariants of the positions you're presenting. More focus on attention and intention would be cool too. Then a small game? At the end you seemed to hit on a good possible win condition, take the back or get their hips to the mat. What would be a win condition for top? What must they do to extricate themselves? Would likely be remove/defeat the invariants?
Great tips as always! I used to get put in X-guard a lot by this one purple belt, and I learned a lot from this video about what he was looking for. Also a very chill vibe before bed with those beats!
I like your style! Always giving “textbook” and alternatives because we all know textbook doesn’t often happen. A lot of content in short videos too, for those of us without time to sit through 4 hours of an instructional 😅
Definitely my favorite guard. I still need some work when they clear the foot and backstep. Maybe you can teach me how to deal with that. In the Gi, they give me the sleeve and I do that sweep you showed, but if I can’t get their sleeve, I try to drop down to their ankle and back trip before they sit too far back on my chest
awesome video! Really great details and instruction, clearly have a good well versed deep understanding of Xguard. i love using it as well and am excited to get to work sharpening it thanks to your video! osss thank you and have a great time on the mats!
I love x guard and single leg x. However, my knees that were bullet proof for the last 33 years have both had big injuries as a result of these guards. Lcl and acl. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?
So condensed it’s very hard to understand. Do you have a tutorial on it? I understood the one with the bottom leg instep hook behind their knee, top leg hooked over their thigh. Is that x guard or single leg x ? Forgive me I’m new to this Jordan 🙏
Excellent instruction! We call the “go behind” position referenced here the “Backside X”. It is my absolute favorite way to sweep directly to Leg Drag 🤙🤙
Ive rewatched this video last night and today while in half butterfly getting smashed by someone who outranks and is bigger than me i suddenly hear in my head @JordanTeachesJiujitsu’s voice x guard is the best guard and i hit this technique twice. Once kinda just landed in my close guard and the second completing the sweep. The coolest part was while i was doing it images of this vid was the laying in my head. Thanks coach, from Edmonton, AB.
Hey Jordan, nice Video. I am a blue belt and decided to study z-guard. Of course there is a lot of content out there but maybe you can make a vid of your own, because you can put so much good info in a video about a topic :)
Jordan, love the videos, man. Been folllowing you for a long time. I was wondering, im in the UK and ive trained BJJ for around 4 years. Im considering a vacation to america in the summer and wondered if you let people swing by and train anytime? 👍
Hey Jordan, just did my first comp as a white belt and was wondering if you have any footage of your matches as a white belt and would want to review them.
