When the Strymon Deco first came out a few years ago I didnt really know who or what it was for. Since then this pedal has flown under the radar of most guitar players out there, but after owning one for a year now I can say I think this is one of the BEST guitar effects pedals that nobody talks about.

I totally appreciate where you're coming from. once you can play a couple riffs and phrases that sound pleasing to your ears, that's the time to start delving into tonal shaping and finding your sound, I think. If you haven't already, maybe get a looper pedal.... Record a phrase or riff that you really like and loop it over and over. While it's looping, start to experiment with each of the knobs, finding the sweet spot, sometimes you'll have several, depending on what kind of pedal it is and what the parameter is you're affecting. That's a good way to start, and then gain as much knowledge as you can about what's actually happening when you twist each one of those knobs by either watching RU-vid videos or talking to someone in the know. Just some tips that I gleaned by messing around with all of this stuff for a couple decades and going to school for audio engineering. I'm free to answer questions occasionally, if you like, you can make a comment and I'll comment back, if I see it. Cheers!

Btw, that “squeaking” sound that happens when you start your 2 track is not because of the machine but rather the tape. It has too much humidity. Ampex was notorious for this. Heat you tape in an oven 100deg for at least 4 to 8 hours. Keep your tape in a box in a dry place when not in use. Thx

Rhett: Your work just keeps getting better and better man - it's no wonder you're growth has been nothing short of phenomenal but I'm proud to say I've been watching you since nearly your start. So great to see your development on the tube. And I've said it before, but I'll say it again - there is something so wonderful about your on-camera delivery and demeanor that speaks to people. While full of information, you never get bogged down by specs but rather are able to stay focused on the key aspects you want to highlight for whatever it is you're talking about. Your delivery is professional, smooth but somehow also very "real" and sincere and never contrived. Honestly, that's pretty rare on youtube gear channels but the ones that do manage that combination are the ones that succeed. Keep it up man - you know you're doing something right when folks like Pete Thorn takes inspiration from your tour Vlogs and starts doing those kinds of things as well. :) Cheers brotha and stay safe....

@@robertw1871 I am running my helix through an amp but bypassing the pre-amp section using the 4 cable method. Allows me to use my speaker cabs. It's the best thing I ever did. Only two pedals I've bought in the 3 years I've had my Helix are an EHX POG and a looper. Everything else I'm 100% in the box and I have no regrets about that. Being able to pull up every tone I might need within seconds, from spacey ambient to aggressive rhythm, is super cool and makes studio work and jam sessions so much more fun.
@matthewwester4672

See, there's a certain discipline that comes with playing guitar though. Yes, sometimes trading out gear isn't as fun as it could be, but cables and plugs and footswitches are where the guitar comes alive. I ditched my pedalboard about 2 years ago. I was tired of pedals. I bought the helix and absolutely loved it, but it almost got too "easy" for me. I didn't have to do anything to dial in a good tone. It was there, there was no struggle or discipline anymore. So I got bored... Having a pedalboard and amps is hard work but it's well worth the struggle. I now have a pedalboard again and every time I plug in I'm even more excited about playing than I was the night before. I recommend keeping what you have, but also experimenting with modeling. There are good things out there. Just make sure it helps your creativity grow.

one dude actually give me a Deco for my Mobius in 2020 and it was on my board ever since, right before an amp(or amp simulator). I love this pedal. It's THE best pedal trade I've ever done. Keep in mind, imma tape effect junkie, and I use my Strymon Timeline is mostly in Tape mode. I also have a Belle Epoch pedal. When I got Mobius I didn't really connect to ANY modulation effect it offered, and I was only using choruses before I got myself a Deco. It has such sweet sound, and the Lag time knob is like complete sweet spot.. I'm going to swap it with a Flint for my guitar board and use Deco as a mixing and recording tool, because I want this sound on all my instruments, not only my guitar.

My sleeper guitar pedal is the EarthQuaker Devices Rainbow Machine. It's gotten a reputation as being "the sparkle box" where you push a button and magical unicorns come out. But if you take the time to tweak its settings just right, it can make a fantastic chorus, slapback echo, harmonizer, and even an ambient effect. It's kind of a "secret weapon." My sleeper gear pick is embarrassing but I feel I must share it so other guitarists might avoid passing it by .. it had actually been out a few years before I even pulled up a video on it.. I've had several drum machines over the yrs, but nothing quite like the Beat Buddy.. in fact, I was so impressed I ended up buying it along with the premium SD card which included a year's subscription that the company would add to each month.. I think I ended up having over $500 in it after I was finished lol.. I guess the name seemed a bit amateurish as to the silly reason I had avoided it for so long.. but to this day, I still feel like considering the simplicity & tonal quality, it's one of the most important pieces of gear a guitarist should have in their arsenal..

Love the Strymon Deco. It’s my favourite pedal and has been since I got it, great overdrive sounds, amazing delay and chorus with the best flanger I own and I’ve got the old school black label boss BF-2 but don’t really use it since I got the Deco. And if you’ve got a fuzz pedal then you’ve got all you need to play Cherub Rock by Smashing Pumpkins.

The Deco seems like an awesome pedal. My other favorite RU-vid guitar teacher, Eric Haugen, uses one quite a bit, with excellent results, too. My pick for Best Guitar Pedal No One Talks About is the Blackout Effectors (sadly defunct boutique maker) Mantra OD. It feels like it’s the secret sauce in my tone, in large part to the Baxandall EQ that sounds awesome on any setting (no muffled lows or shrill highs). From Andy’s ProGuitarShop demo: “The Blackout Effectors Mantra is capable of bringing together two worlds of overdrive. This unique pedal can provide vintage overdrive as well as incredibly dirty and crusty distortion tones. With a whole lot of crunch and thunder on tap, the Blackout Effectors Mantra is comfortable in both domains of overdrive. The secret to the Mantra is that is utilizes an amp-like circuit that has multiple cascaded MOSFET and JFET gain stages. It is handmade with discrete components and no diode clipping. This design creates a completely organic and touch sensitive overdrive that also provides deep and resonant tone when you clean up with your guitars volume knob. Not only will the Mantra meld well with single coils or humbuckers, it will equally be at home with Fender or Marshall voiced amplifiers due to its Baxandall-style EQ. With this feature, both Treble and Bass controls interact dynamically with each other for scooped mids or mid-emphasized crunch.”

A Baxandall tone stack really serves a drive pedal. Mine is the Rook from MojoHandFX. It's the foundation of my tone. 🙂

Had a Teac 4 track reel to reel yrs ago.... At one point I was recording something and my drummer walked in and said “Hey”! That “Hey” had me turning my head and looking over my shoulder for years since that day. Nothing... sounds like tape. Wish I still had it. Be well, Rett.
@shayneoneill1506

I had a beautiful tape 4 track tascam reel, that I used extensively. Our drummer did something far more insane. Was finally recording my band with it, and while partying after finally getting all the tracks down our drummer came in tripping on acid and decided to create a "music ball" by pulling all the tape off the reels and rolling it into a ball. Then he unscrewed the back off it and tried to "fix" the problem by installing a "psychic antenae", and pulled the weed plant growing out back yard and a bunch of dirt and put it into the back and screwed the back plate back on, thus destroying the machine. The band was broken up by the time that night was over. Man the 90s was a fun time to be alive, but occasionally utterly confusing lol. A decade and a half later I brought an 8 track tascam reel to reel , but ended up selling it again because honestly the pro tools setup just worked so much easier. Kinda regret it now, Tape for all its hassles sounds amazing.

Here's a sleeper amp, the Carvin X100-B. Choice of Steve Vai, Earl Slick and Warren Cuccurullo in the 80s. Overdrive tones? Terrible. Clean tones? Like a Twin on steroids. With an onboard EQ, effects loop, and 1/2 power switch, a great gigging amp that takes pedals too. Can usually be found on the cheap side.

Most interesting pedal I’ve acquired in awhile is the Walrus audio Julia, pretty amazing what you can do with it, really fattened up my sound and has a huge range of very different tones, it’s a chorus vibrato delay reverb pseudo stereo pedal the best I can describe it, probably not a sleeper, but I doubt most know what it does and how good it sounds when setup for subtle tone... I run a Keeley compressor in front of it and it makes everything else in the chain come alive... I’m sure I could get the same tones with my helix but it would be extremely complex to do without a bunch of hassle...

As of 3 days ago I'm the owner of a Deco, largely on the recommendation of this video. Using it as the final stage on an acoustic guitar pedal board. Have barely gotten into it (2 shows) and I have to figure out how to sort of square it with my existing compressor (Wamper Ego if anyone cares, one of the best things I've ever done to my acoustic tone) but on the whole I am jazzed as shit about this pedal and can't wait to get it really dialed in.
