Are you using a hang-on-back filter? Thinking about getting one? Watch this! I've been using them for years and these are the best tips that I've come across.
Sicce, Seachem, Fluval, Marineland the brand will not matter. These tips apply to all hang-on-back filters. Take a look and if you have questions or some tips that you'd like to share please comment below. We all learn from each other at this channel.
Remember to always be learning and don't ever forget that you reading this right now - YOU ROCK!

Lighting of the 300 and 210 Cichlid tanks is provided by JC&P and AQQA. For JC&P LED lights and the other aquarium products they offer please use this link: jcpaquarium.com?sca_ref=936021.gPiOsPIQTH

I use HOB's on all of my tanks. My favorite is now the Seachem Tidal filters. I have pre-filters on them & leave the bottom sponge in. The rest is filled with polyester floss. Keeps my tanks clear! 11 tanks so far. All 20G & up have Tidal filters on them!

Ben…I use two AquaClear 110s on my 75 gallon African cichlid aquarium in addition to a SunSun 704b canister. The 110s have been used for well over 12 years and they require very little maintenance. Water remains crystal clear but I agree that using polyfil does help greatly with water clarity. Thanks for taking the time to create those videos. John Bravo

I have 2 Marineland HOB filters and was changing the cartridges to often... I found a video from Aquarium Co-op on a better and cheaper alternative for the Marineland filters... My water became much clearer,easier maintenance and more money in my pocket... I would absolutely recommend people use pre-filters sponges also..

Huge fan of HOBs. Especially the Seachem Tidal brand. Easy to maintain and they run smooth as butter. Love the self priming feature and the huge water bucket allowing for tons of your favorite media.

Really enjoyed the hang on back filters and suds video. I agree the tidals are rock solid filters. Media can be easily "engineered" to suit most applications. And there are other great filters also. Thank you. Oh I guess the suds were all mine.

I just got this thing called an Eheim prefilter, basically a sponge in a cage, to attach to the intake of my Tidal75. I just need like two inches of 1" inner diameter tubing and I can totally overkill this fine engineering. I was too exhausted to get anything done on my tank stand, but I find I can BUY EVEN MORE online when I'm tired, kinda like those people who claim to drive better when they're drunk. And even if it isnt filtering anything yet... Just connecting them... Opening and closing the baskets with the clicky rings... Still pretty great. I dont have a local fish store. I do however have a store! Pretty big, with a strong concrete foundation. Only problem is it's in a tiny village with no sewage or traffic, so we'd have to promote it as a mecca online. Aquarium Co-Op Canada sounds good. But instead of competing with Amazon, let's make half of it an internet cafe and teach people both how to shop and to find the Nigerian Prince of their dreams.

Hey Ben. I have always used HOB filters, they are the best. Currently I have 2 Seachem Tidal 110s on my 100gal all male cichlid acrylic tank. The water is always crystal clear, always. Low maintenance, quite, easy to maintain. Turning 900 gals an hour. Almost at 50k subs ! Keep up the good work...

I agree, the marineland filters are awesome! I've been running 3 of them for over a decade now, not one of them has stopped running yet🤙 I cut my own filter sponge and run the pre filter sponge as well

Hob’s def one my fav easy to clean and maintain a lot cheaper than canisters I run ac 110, tetra whispers , penguins, and aqueon as supplemental filters and another place to grow good bacteria and as back up filters, but sand does stop those impellers if don’t use pre filter unless u have a heavier sand like black diamond sand blasting sand or pool filter sand , awesome video Ben thanks, i like using poly fil which I rinse and put right back in big money saver as well.

Prefilters are excellent if you have snails as well! I have Aqueon and AquaClear HOBs. I do like the convenience and knowing the water is really being filtered compared to my tanks with just sponge filters.

Great tips, thank you. I have had an Aquaclear 110 for 10 yrs, just replaced it yesterday as it has slowed down. I will get an new impeller for it. I use power heads w/hoses to the top of my tank. Wish I could send you a pic of them. Inside, I use sponges, co op rings,lava rock, quilt batting for fines. No substrate. My goldfish have had pieces stuck in their mouth twice, successfully removed. Only one HOB the rest are power heads to the top of the tank.Very easy maintenance. They also provide heat a little. Thank you-

"Always Be Learning" Sometimes we need that refresher on the basics 🙂 A few years ago I got away from HOBs mostly due to the noise they make when water evaporates. I have slowly been adding one to 4 different tanks for added water polishing. Currently I'm running a Seachem Tidal 75 on one tank and a Marineland 275 Penguin Pro on another tank. The Tidal does a great job with their surface skimmer and cleans up all those organics on the water surface as well as comes out of the box with a large bag of Matrix Bio-media. The Penguin Pro seems to have a bit more room for sponges. Both are self priming and have adjustable flow which are must have features for my FishRoom 😎

Hello Ben. Is this a live show ? Lol...I use original poly fil for my hang on back filters. Good advice on impeller cleaning. I use aqueon quiet flo, for many reasons. I use 75 model on my 40 breeders , two 75 on my 75 gallon... keep up the awesome information.

I use an Aquaclear 50 on my 29g, with the factory white sponge, one carbon pack for the smaller Aquaclear 30, with a decent amount of Poly Fill and the factory bio beads. Tank also has an Aquatop 40 gal sponge and Sun Sun JVP-110 wave make. My 10g Betta tank has an old school soft blue foam corner sponge

👍😎 I have 2 Marineland big HOB’s that have been running for 15? years. Never been a problem. Now wondering if still gonna be ok after being stored for 3-4 months while moving. My experience tells me that electronics don’t like being messed with, like turning on and off. 🤞🖖

You can extend the life of the cartridges quite a bit if you rinse them off frequently. I have used the same cartridge for about 13 months because I rinse the filter pad of the cartridge clean with a hose once a week when I do a water change. I do not use a prefilter on that one, either. The cartridge would last two months otherwise. I will switch to alternative media when I run out of cartridges, but I don't know when that will be.

I love HOB for smaller to mediums sized tanks. I have found that just filling them completely with sponge give a great environment for bacteria, the water is not only free of ammonia and nitrite, the water becomes crystal clear after a few months. When I have a large tank (over 100 gal) I switch to a sump. I just never liked canisters. But HOB's are quiet, flexible and reliable. I use AquaClear/Fluval and have also had luck with the new Aqueon Pro series; they have a great deal of space to fill with sponge.

Aquaclear impeller shafts are replaceable items. Consider replacing it once a year or every other year. It will really quiet down the filter. Also, lubricating the impeller shaft with a food-grade lubricant will also keep it quiet.

Hey Ben, I will be setting up a new 75 gal after Christmas, after having been away from the hobby for several years. I am debating running 1 tidal 110 HOB or going to 2 Tidal 55 or 75's at each end of the tank, and possibly a sponge fillter as well. This will be a community fish tank with some plants, but not heavily planted. What are your thoughts on the 1 larger vs 2 smaller HOB's? Thanks for the content, been watching a lot of your videos!
@BenOchart
@BenOchart Год назад
Hi Rick, I like the two HOB idea and I'd go with the larger (75) units for two reasons: 1) If you''re servicing one unit the other one carries the load effortlessly and 2) If one breaks, you're fine until you can get a replacement filter or part. Also, if you get a second tank you can take off one HOB and add it to the new tank and you have an instantly cycled new tank.
