Please check out my new book Free Range Survival Chickens. This is, in my opinion, the most comprehensive book on how to successfully free range chickens available: a.co/d/i4dKQlz My flock of Florida Cracker game fowl is all grown up and making babies of their own. Here's an update on them and a few reasons why I think they may end up being the best homestead chickens for deep woods farms and the best breed of chicken to free range overall. Links for Hatching Eggs are below. My brother and I only list what's available or close to available, so if none are available on the listing add the listings to your watch list and you'll be notified when more are available.

Good video. I would kindly disagree though with the choice of bird for a homestead. I'm almost 70 and was raised on a working farm/homestead and we would never have game chickens, other than a couple of old hens to set and raise guinea fowl with. They would raise the guineas and hardly lose any. Their eggs are smaller than small and they have hardly any meat. You are correct though that they are survive oriented birds. They are always on the look out. They will also if left to free range revert back to wild. Also they are very good at hiding their nest and are always setting their eggs. Great video!

You're right they're scrawny and they hide their eggs. What makes them so good for homesteading is that they reproduce themselves at a high rate with no human intervention. My dad grew up on a 100 acre backwoods farm and they free ranged hundreds of game chickens. Once a month my grandmother would shoot 30 or so game hens and that would be the family's chicken meat for the month. They never had to feed the chickens. The game chickens just finned for themselves in a semi-feral state. They basically lived like wild turkeys. My family basically had infinite chicken meat at no cost except the cost of the .22 or shotgun shells used to kill them. Those were the original Florida cracker game chickens and I wish I had a flock from those bloodlines.

I'd like a few so they can teach my flock to scoot under the bushes. It's bred out of these hatchery chickens. Also sitting on eggs. I think your lucky if you get a hatchery chicken to hatch out a brood. But I'm not an expert.

Someone just gave me 2 jungle roosters and I thought they were a bad idea, because of how small they are and I didn't want to breed smaller chickens if I want meat. After watching this, I think hanging on to these roosters is a good idea for heartiness in the breeding. Thank you.

Game crosses are the only birds I can free range around here without them being killed. They’ve learned to hide from hawks and fly up in the trees when stray dogs come into the yard. You can easily increase egg production and carcass size by crossing with any other modern breed that’s known for production. My Rhode Island Red game crosses are my favorite chickens.

I've experimented a little bit crossing them to white leghorns. Seem like good chickens but I hate the white color so I gave those away. I'm going to try again with some Wyandottes.

@@Florida_Bullfrog try brown leghorns they look similar to crackers but will be smaller than other breeds. They are better free ranging tho for the flighty nature

Crosses of jungle fowl/game to brown leghorn seems like a natural choice.

You have nice chickens, I've always wanted to breed very strong chickens and through my research I found a very flighty, survival chicken that is normal size (bigger than game fowl) and very broody with a good meat. This breed is called "Gauloise doré" they are not very popular and a little difficult to find around the world but because they originally where created in France, it is probably the best place where you could find them.

I love your channel! You are extremely knowledgeable about chickens and I respect the hell out of that! I hope someday to be able to create a breed that is self thriving like your birds. I just started with black sumatras last year (I've always had barnyard mixes as a kid) but really wanted to start with a more wild breed of chicken. I'm having a blast with them! Keep up the awesome work👍

Yea, It's much better than my 2 1/2 acre sand forest lot about 40 or so miles from him. All that'll grow here without baby sitting it is Loquats and Mulberry's. Everything else just won't make it.

I love flocks that are about 1/3 or 1/2 American game and look like this or similar. They look beautiful but usually you can keep multiple cocks together without the inevitable fights to the death. There a couple of videos of a feral Black McRae flock on here (one of my favourite American game breeds) with a few maturing stags running the show. Amazing to see but you know what's coming any day in that situation if they are left to it. One cross I'd love to try is American game x Friesian. Friesian are amazing flyers, have a beautiful body structure and can look after themselves

Bullfrog, do they all return to the hen house at dusk to roost? Our more domesticated breed birds would, but our bantams started roosting in the trees.
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog 4 года назад
Mine all return to the henhouse and roost on the top roosting pools about 7-8 feet high. I have given some excess roosters away and at least one of those roosts in the trees. I think the key is starting them in the henhouse at an early age and giving them a high roosting point. I suspect that as the next generation grows up some of the new roosters will take their hens out into the woods to roost to start separate flocks. Its not yet clear to me how hard the roosters will fight with each other when mature.

I couldn’t help but notice that besides the game jungle fowl crosses you also have Wyandottes and white leghorns. Are you planning on mixing those in as well? I’d love to see the results!
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog 3 года назад
I have mixed both. The white leghorns crossed well but remained white and I moved them off the farm. I also crossed them to the Wyandottes but none of those mixes survived hawk predation.

I've heard jungle fowl are weary of you and don't like You to get close. Here are my requirements for a chicken breed. Can fly, cold hardy, ok layers, affordable, tame, and predator resistant. That's why I want a breed that can fly. I was thinking either cubalaya bantams or old English bantams. Maybe jungle fowl but their tropical and don't like people.

How do you harvest them ? One at a time with a pellet gun ? I saw your other chicken vid and they hauled butt when you tried to approach them.
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog 3 года назад
If during the day, I use a pellet gun. If I night, I take them off the roost. The flock that coop roosts is easy. The ones in the trees I get by using a long pole to stick under their feet. They step onto the poll and I can lower and grab them.

I used to sell them heavily but this year I cut back. Try flea markets for American gamefowl. Some of the hatchery American gamefowl are ok too, usually sold as “Old English Standard Gamefowl”

Simply raising chicks with game chickens can heavily influence their abilities. Genetics ain’t got shit on flock learning.
