Fun fact: there’s a history of lighthouse keepers going crazy. This is believed to be a result of mercury poisoning, since what allowed the light to function properly is a pool of mercury. A massive pool of mercury. Exposure to so much of it for so long causes hallucinations and general sickness, which made afflicted keepers hate their job and either pass away (from su*cide or illness) or abandon their post forever. Edit: the mercury pool was supposed to suspend the spinning light mechanism, because it’s dense enough in large quantities to keep heavy objects on top of it, while also allowing for suspension because it’s a liquid.
I think it's because you have a harder time making out what it is you're looking at. Is it a human? a monster? or just an object? if it is either of the last two, what exactly is it?
i believe it's because it leaves more up to the imagination. like in high res models, you just perceive the monsters as they are, but when you can't make out the details of the monster's appearance, it forces your brain into inputting it's own elements, which make it scarier
i like how the chase scenes use the monster's POV. it adds to the horror of the not knowing what the creature actually looks like and makes the player's creativity take control of what they think the monster looks like. it's good horror game philosophy. the less you see of an unknown, the scarier it can become.
Totally agree. Monsters you never see in their entirety are the scariest. Maybe because we fear the unknown? Plus there’s the added bonus of not having to try and render something scary with such low poly 😂
I always thought that jumpscares that don’t scream at you and instead just reveal themselves are so, so much more terrifying than ones that do and I’m glad this game took them to the next level. I will always remember Sunny’s first night in Omori, that figure at the door…
When you look at the mirror and you just see her behind you got my heart pumping the first time I played Omori. The fact that sunny doesn’t react to it at all he just accepts it and how it wasn’t like a screamer or something just dead silence.
@@willevensen7130 exactly, when it’s a jumpscare with noise you’re terrified for one moment, but then soon after you’re like “guess the game pulled one on me”… On the contrary, when the sound/ambiance don’t change this scary feeling doesn’t stop - you weren’t prepared to see what you see, and you don’t even know what it is. That feeling of not knowing what you’re looking at, or the way the game doesn’t really acknowledge it as an abnormal thing is so much more powerful than a regular jumpscare…
Honestly, this is such a breath of fresh air from the typical indie horror games. It's like Little Nightmares. There are no jumpscares, no apparent threat, just... Silence. It's a very unique take on the typical horror game and takes advantage of nearly every aspect to frighten the player and simultaneously keep it interesting. It's really uncanny, like you're not supposed to be there. It reminds me a lot of No Players Online, where you're alone, and you have to figure things out for yourself. Anything could happen at any moment. It's horror done RIGHT
it is so strange how horror games are the genre with the most experimentation and yet it is so stagnated, crazy how one game change things up and get things right and spawns a genre with thousand of copies P.T have clones being made till this day and every indie game is PS1 style because of puppet combo
The scariest part of this I think is the small environment and the monsters it shows you that are awakening. The worst feeling a person can feel, in my opinion, is dread, and the threat of a monster in a cramped environment that you can barely walk in, let alone run, is terrifying, and creates massive amounts of dread.
This is probably the best direction you could take your content in, outside of the FNAF videos. Using your platform to highlight a small but brilliant indie game while still providing the analysis content we love to see. Excited to hopefully see more of this kind of stuff in the future!
Nothing like a well done lovecraftian horror; the kind that relies on uncomfortable questions that linger, regardless if you want them answered or even if you can answer them. Giving the player the canvas and a sketch but letting the them paint in the scene and details, it's such a tricky balance to pull off that goes understated.
They changed a few things since the last time I saw it. Like the monster used to be a gross bug monster which made it more related to the moths and there was even a segment where you play as the previous keeper slowly turning into the monster. It also had an entire segment where you enter this segment where your chased by the monster in ancient stone tunnels and enter some ancient lovecraftian temple in this massive cave.
I remember that too. I went in to this video hoping for a deep dive into that ending only to be confused. I was actually looking through the comments to make sure I was remembering the right game lol
@@MarcoAdventures Ok, true. I think I missed that part. I wasn't trying to diss the video in anyway I was just confused and thought the game updated or changed massively since I saw it last lmao.
I’m not sure, but I think one of the things they changed was worse graphics…. Edit: I was halfway through when I wrote this, and now finished the game. I think that they changed the ending in the director’s cut, as they mentioned revamping the second half of the game in the blurb about it. I got the ending where you turn into the monster, and some of the dialog is stuff I won’t soon forget. You truly feel like a monster during that sequence
I love that this isn't another title which relies on somewhat scary character designs, bright colors, and the "fun things turned bad" idea. This is a genuinely scary title because its different from what we've come to expect, and that scares us, all of us. Not to mention that even though the game is smaller, and lower quality then security breach, I was able to get more entertainment out of this 16 minute review of the game, then a youtuber reacting to security breach for 3 whole hours. Excellent vid keep up the good work!
Ps1 and n64 graphics can be scary if done right it's why people have fear from pianos after all But this game's ost spells out lighthouse with each first letter of each song.
Honestly the whole “fun/cute things turned sour” trope was kinda freaky the first few times it was done, think bendy and the ink machine or the first couple fnaf games, it just got old and boring after 9 years of copies being churned out faster than the rabbit reproduction rate, it got sanitized to appeal to a younger and therefor larger audience so people could make money off of it.
“The sky is grey and cloudy, the only company we have is the seagulls which fly away the closer we get to them and the only real place we have to call home is a small wooden house” Ah. so you visited Bristol then.
@@Ramsey276one i think i know the video youre talking about. didnt they guy need to buy a subway gift card to get the game or something lmao edit: just looked it up, it was posted by nick robinson
Hey, thanks for this. Videos like yours are very important to me as a disabled person who enjoys horror. I have a very severe anxiety disorder so I can’t experience most horror media firsthand (it gives me panic attacks) but I love all the twisted stories folks tell. Videos like these let me experience these things without hurting myself, which is so special to me :]
YES me too i tried games for myself ONCE and said "never again" so i always go for gameplay, it also makes me feel accompanied too, as weird as that sounds
I feel the same way, not gonna lie. The only horror stuff I've really experienced on my own was Mandela Catalogue and Dreams of an Insomniac. And even then, if I think about either for to.o long when I don't have background noise or it's getting late into the day, my paranoia kicks in tenfold and I start to anticipate someone entering my house. So it's really nice to just have a guide explain it or experienced it for/with me :')
@skyedragon2031 take time to read the Holy Bible. When you learn about our Lord and Savior and how much he loves us this will help with your disabilities. Have a wonderfully blessed day.
Holy crap! A game that has a second person point of view segment?! That’s incredibly rare, and it’s even rarer that it’s in a horror game. Plus , the fact that it doesn’t let you know what and where the monsters are just adds more to the greatness of this game.
I seriously love how his persona is a weird twisty demon-like entity, but in real life he gets scared so easily. His persona actually inspired me to make my OWN creepy persona.
Being in the unknown of a game, especially if its obscure and popular streamers play, you have a whole new game ahead of you. Something nobody knows. To me, that makes it more scary. I'd you play Security Breach now, you know most of it, which makes it a bit boring. But these kinds of games are good in unknown-ness. Good video, as always :)
I think this is the reason. Doki Doki actually got popular. Even though you know it’s gonna go weird, you don’t know HOW, so you’re just kind of…waiting, building Sayori up for yourself.
@@goroakechi6126 I never played nor did watch Doki doki, however, i know that every girl except for Monika dies one point in the game, that by itself removes the horror element for me.
The warping of world accidentally feels like ambient animation, like trees and grass swaying on the wind, buildings reflecting subtle changes in light. I don't know if it's possible, but I would love for it to make a return on modern gaming in some way.
Same, but I noticed how manly got “All” endings, but the one mentioned here with the village is just not present. I have been looking around on the internet and I am very confused.
11:20 While I am interested in the game, I'm also of the mindset that there's a certain kind of joy you get out of seeing something after you've been spoiled. Nothin' wrong with going in blind, but you don't really notice or appreciate stuff like a Librarian watching someone a little too closely in the background or that the Monster was watching you from a painting without spoilers. For me, being spoiled on stuff just lets me see how well the execution a piece of media had. With all due respect and beyond, spoil away, Pastra! I'll get around to playing the game when I get the guts to play horror games.
@@davidbanan. not necessarily some only work once(mostly ones that are built around that initial experience) and that's just fine but for most pieces of media I agree replay value is a must
@@davidbanan. have you played "Outer Wilds"? It's fantastic and it absolutely only works once. If you haven't, don't spoil it for yourself. Don't even read the discription. It's a first person exploration game set in a tiny solar system. That's all you want to know.
Fun fact, the chase scenes of controlling the player while seeing through the monster is an instance of Second-Person Gameplay, when you control a character through the eyes of another.
it's great to see small indie horror games like this get so much recognition, as that's pretty much where all massive horror franchises start. even fnaf started as a little indie game that ended up blowing up
Second person chases are so terrifying due to that fear of not knowing where you're going or what is chasing you. It's such an effective way to give you a massive scare and turn a normal moment into a tense and terrifying sequence. I don't have the guts to play a horror game due to how paranoid I become and reocurring nightmares, so I might try and watch a gameplay with commentary cause otherwise I wouldn't be able to watch it in silence
I love indie horror games, they always hold a special place in my heart. The blocky and low-res graphics give them this charm and make it scarier imo, I love games like this! This is actually a very cool-sounding game, I like how it's not entirely fictional, too (As in going missing on an island isn't unheard of, so it's somewhat realistic, which adds to the horror). If I had steam, I'd play this, it sounds fun! Thanks for pumping out banger videos every other day, take care of yourself! :)
I'm not a fan of horror games (I'm a big crybaby scaredy cat), but I'm glad you make these videos because it means I can appreciate the artistry of this genre without having to subject myself to the scares firsthand. Came for FNAF, stayed for your great commentary/analysis
as a side note, the game has gotten some attention due to the RU-vidr Mandaloregaming reviewing it, although probably not much. I'm glad this game is getting more attention. EDIT: sorry if this came off as sarcastic (at least it did to me after reading it back), just wanted to let you know this game has thankfully gotten some coverage.
@@overseerpjoe9477 I think manly played the game before it got a huge update that changed the entire end segment apparently, it was completely different lol
The monster chase sequences actually remind me of Driver: San Francisco. They had missions where the MC would be driving the car you are chasing because he’s warged into the driver of your POV. It’s always a really cool mechanic
As someone who doesn’t play any horror games or really consume anything horror related (I just don’t like being frightened, even though I handle it very well) your videos are extremely entertaining and educational for me.because I get to understand WHY someone who enjoys horror likes the aspects of a game. As a student about to graduate with a degree in game design I believe that one of the most important skills a developer can have is to view your projects from as many perspectives as possible. Even if I’m not making a horror game having one section that has horror like elements to raise tension is still something I need to do properly and watching your videos gives me great insight as to what you think works for a horror game. Obviously as I just said having multiple perspectives is good so you aren’t the only one I watch for horror content but I would LOVE to see you review more indie horror games like this one.
Yeah you have to know what works and what doesn't work and learning psychology is actually really useful since your using psychological warfare with the player and making tension suspense and genuine fear monster design is also a big factor you have to make your monster scary but you can make a monster that looks ominous and disturbing to look at and trigger certain fears like arachnophobia and things like a flesh like humanoid with an ominous smile walking towards you and you can't move gives the player dread of what the monster is going to do to them and what is going to happen next and gameplay is very important you CAN make a fun but things like yumei Nikki where it's an experience and it's pretty jarring when a change of POV and scenery change since it's unexpected and when something like a chase happens or something disturbing happens the players brain has to think quick and this what makes a horror game good the games plays the player like a fiddle and messes with their heads and gives them fear anxiety pressure and stress
This game gives me serious Yume Nikki vibes when the building tension begins, that loneliness suddenly interrupted by a disturbing scene makes you feel even uncomfortable in your own home. 100% is worth the money.
"For the dead gave been forgotten", with how you depicted this beast, it reminds me much of DnD's false hydra, which makes itself be ignored by the minds of others so it can drag people down in its pit to feast on them without problems. The people it eats are forgotten and even people with proper relationships like a wife being eaten by it, make it so that the husband doesnt think he had a wife in the first place. I'm not sure if you understood any of this, but it's just a thought
It’s victims are erased from the memories of others, as if they never even existed in the first place. One of DnD’s most horrifying monsters. Personally, I like the concept of reverse false hydras, someone just appearing someday, and it’s as if they were always there, but somethings not quite right, you can never remember exactly how you met them, others always tell conflicting stories about them that can’t possibly make sense according to linear time, yet no one ever seems to question it. And they’re always there. Even if you could have sworn they just left, they’re there again, and their appearance seems to shift everytime you see them. But, that’s how they’ve always looked, isn’t it? Maybe you’re just imagining things. In truth, they’re a reverse false hydra, draining your life force slowly as they hang around you, you age rapidly, but that’s just how old you’ve always been, right? Ah, mind’s not what it used to be, age creeping up on you. Perfectly natural. Happens to everyone eventually right? But you could have sworn that you were young and full of life just days ago. But that can’t be right can it? It was years ago, yes, so many years. You feel tired. Your friend suggests you take a nap. Yes, that seems a wonderful idea. So very tired. Just a quick… nap. Another victim drained, the insidious monster moves on. It took only days, and all that was left was a desiccated husk.
The subtle Basement jumpscare you mentioned is why i honestly love this game, and during one of the endings where you turn around and theres also something there too. i love it, no noise, no nothing.
I've definitely seen this game in a Markiplier video, I don't remember if it was in a 3 scary games video or just a special video for this one game. It's a great game and I also really like that you talk about it.
I love how passionate you are about these horror games, and how you almost romanticize the dark and deranged aspects of these projects. Can't wait to see more from you! 🖤🖤🖤
I have no idea what this kind of artstyle is called but I absolutely ADORE it in this game. Makes me shit my pants but also go "oooo crunchy graphics" Also Clyde's little giggle in the intro always makes me giddy, what a silly fella :3
I can’t believe your almost at 70k! I remember seeing your RU-vid and videos and liking your type of video and I subbed when you were at 44k and now, two months later, your already near 70k and I’m very happy that your becoming this popular and I believe you deserved every sub you’ve gotten and I’m hoping you’ll keep making this type of content for a long time!
I like how your review of games are still very emotional and personal because it can get boring listening to someone talk about a video game like it’s a nature documentary. A series where you highlight unpopular yet still good indie games would be cool! And supporting small creators is always good
This game looks gorgeous! I love horror games that take advantage of the limited graphics old games used to have. It's an aesthetic I fuck with so hard and to see indie games using these graphics to their advantage (especially horror games) to make them even more scary is just SO COOL!
I love the chase scenes. The 2nd person view is very underused in games. The only other time I've seen 2nd person gameplay was in Driver:San Francisco in the final boss fight. Love your videos, keep it up!
I love your videos, the way you describe the games you play is amazing and it really feels like we're playing it. You seriously deserve more subs and your art style is amazing
honestly, the POV and abruptness really do a lot for the chases, but for me the music really sells it, the tense, loud thumping overwhelming, growing in frequency as the monster gets closer, that high ringing adding to the tension further, it just makes for such a tense experience, despite knowing what happens it still makes me slightly stressed almost
I've seen jack play this game! I absolutely loved it the moment I saw it. The obscureness of the monster itself, how you hardly ever see what the main character does seeing as your perspective changes to keep that theme without keeping the monster totally hidden. It's amazing, I'm so glad it's getting this attention!
(This isn’t anything to to with the game) I think an underused way of jumpscares is that when you’re doing stuff, you randomly hear someone whispering behind you and when you turn around, there’s literally no one the there. I feel like that kind of jumpscare, like you said, builds tension, and having that happen randomly is just SO cool
That thumbnail gives me Vietnam flashbacks from this one game I saw a few years back made by a guy who had depression and bad dreams due to depression, and the game was made based off of his dreams. It was a really good game, too. I can’t remember what is was called though, anyone know what game im talking about?
@@bdhhsgbyddhggg I figured that game was what you where talking about. The thumbnail art does sort of remind me of the art style used in Neverending Nightmares.
This game looks really good tbh. Retro horror games in general are truly terrifying due to there atmosphere despite them looking like they were made for the PS1.
If your looking for unique horror games I think you'll like a game called Iron Lung, as a fellow horror lover I'll confirm that it is AMAZING on SO many levels
when pastra mentioned the jumpscare in this game being effective because it happens during a routine the player has done several times before, iron lung was the first thing i thought of
I love scary stuff centered around a lighthouse like you said the feeling of being alone on a small island, but in my opinion it is better with a friend or two it would be funny if they made this multiplayer lots of screaming and laughing
Dude, I love ur art style and vids so much It’s a mix of a comfy nostalgic feeling considering you talk about all this stuff I’ve grown up with like Fnaf, and new stuff I haven’t heard of before. It’s like hearing a friend reminisce about something the two of you experienced together, y’know.
fun fact: lighthouse keeping is actualy quite dangerous, you face the risks of gaining anxiety, workplace accidents, gaining schitzophrenia, and insanity, and if you dont succumb to these if you have coworkers they certainly will. And back then the lights used to lie on a bed of mercury...probably very obvious why that is a risk.
hey idk if i’ve watched you before but i’d just like to mention that i absolutely love your videos. this one, at least, is informative and interesting while keeping an ominous and chilling yet comforting vibe. your little character especially is very enjoyable to look at, thanks for doing what you do.
hey, you should talk about an indie title called "iron lung", its a short horror title that's not scary based on what you see, but rather what you don't, and its such a unique and bizarre game.
If I may very lightly suggest something, I think it would be a really good idea if you do analysis videos on games and then post your playthroughs of it after. I think it would be really good for your channel, since your analysis videos go in-depth about why a certain game is amazing, and then if you post a playthrough, we can see the perspective and the reactions you went through that end up influencing your opinion of the game. I felt this with Treasure Island and now this game as well, wanting to see the good parts that you've talked about in this video. And you did kinda do that with Treasure Island by making a reaction compilation, but I think that could be kicked up a notch by uploading your entire playthrough. Although, as you said in this video, you want us to play the games ourselves. But for me and others who aren't able to, I think you could make good content out of our interests in wanting to see the game. And sure, maybe many other people have had their own playthrough of these games, but it would be so much nicer if we see the thought process and perspective of the game analyst himself, y'know? This comment may be worded more like criticism, but I'm really just making a suggestion bc I think it's a brilliant and entertaining idea. Of course, if playthroughs aren't the direction you want your channel to go through, then there's no pressure to follow my advice.
I was thinking the same thing! As I was watching bits of your play through I was thinking “man I’d like to see that whole thing” But like op said if that’s not the direction you want to go in I totally understand, I love your analysis content! Just wanted to show that there is some interest if you want to
Rewatching this video makes me appreciate this game even more the chase sequence is scary the fact that your in second person controlling your character while the monster chases you is terrifying.
This is an amazing horror game! Happy you shedded some light on it. Suggestion for your next video, explore a horror game on steam known as “Iron Lung.” It’s *definitely* not terrifying.
The music that goes with the chase scene is amazing. not only that, the way the chase puts you in the perspective of the monster is literally genius, because you know whatever is chasing you is probably this horrifying creature with giant arms and legs and everything above, but you never see it. In other chase scenes, you can at least turn around and see whats chasing you. but this game saves this until the end. (Which is absolutely Genius)
Really hoping to see more of this type of stuff from you man, your voice lends itself really well to a light yet questioning discussion of the games and topics you choose, seriously keep up the great work!
Yo I just found this channel loving it so far I love horror games but hate to get scared sometimes. So videos like this are great allowing me to explore a horror game that sounds like a lot of fun and has interesting stories without getting so scared by a game that I just stop playing. Keep doing what you’re doing because I’m here for it.
9:00 another horrifying part about the chase scenes, is that we still for the most part have NO idea what this monster looks like, only that it is large and looming with large legs, which in my opinion makes it even scarier
The black screen when entering a room reminds me of loading screens, and god I wish tech-based horror made more use of it. Blue screens, loading bars, update screens, and anti-piracy screens are so eerie for seemingly no reason. Like even when downloading a game that I actively chose to get, there’s something so ominous about that download bar that I can’t explain. It’s so simple, but it really makes you feel helpless. It takes your control away, makes you watch as it does who knows what and often times loading screens either can’t be closed or take a while to do so because they’re trying to run so many things while also canceling them at the same time. It builds anticipation and dread, and it takes you out of the action meaning that you can’t jump into it immediately and you need a moment to get back into the swing of things.
The fact that your character can be stupidly goofy and terrifying at the same time is amazing. I also like how you can do just like whatever you want with their face. Like the one where they have their eyeball in their mouth or where their face is literally full of eyeballs are some of my favourites. TL/DR I really like the character
0:14 "And the easier it is for it to scare you." Proving this is how this is the first time I'm seeing this particular sprite of Clyde, and it made me shudder XD
I absolutely love you. Your editing style, your scripts, your soothing voice, the passion you put in each topic you talk about. You're one of my favourite youtubers of all time, I swear❤️❤️
I always love that little Jevil laugh, Jevil was always my Deltarune character ever since I found him, not even Spamton won over my love for this insane maniac of a jester
Hey Pastra! While watching this, it reminded me a lot of this horror game on Steam called "How Fish is Made". It's quite short (finished it in about 45 minutes), and free. I would be ecstatic if you made a video about it!
