This was such a fun video and it's been in the works for a loooong time! I love this business model of custom IKEA companies, don't you? Let me know of any others that I've missed in the comments so I can keep adding to my list of faves! EDIT: I've added another discount link in the description sent to me after this video went live!
Loved this video! An idea: When you mention IKEA names could you flash the spelling on the screen? It would totally help to be able to search it later. I know I’m mispronouncing them, then you teach the correct way to say it, and I can barely spell as it is 😂
Fantastic! It’s like adding a belt or jacket to the little black dress or a tie and vest with a suit, to go for a night out! I think offering the furniture or cabinetry with different option of materials, colors, finishes should also include a variety of styles for pulls, with variety of finishes and colors to choose from.!
Very cool. We don't have IKEA in NZ just yet (there are some kinda-expensive resellers, I think, but they don't do everything) but I've noticed that some of the big-box hardware shops will do an "unfinished" version of, e.g., kitchen kits if you want to paint it yourself without painting over a difficult finish. I don't know if that's something IKEA do as well but it seems like kind of a nice inbetweeny-DIY option.
Really good, Nick. Lots of research and reference. Good news for those not interested in purchasing vintage. Comfortworks is onto something by being more expansive….
THANK YOU, Nick, for balancing your content between large and small businesses, and even -- my stars! -- information for Canadians about Canadian companies. Keep doing what you're doing.
Ikea Hackers (upgrading and changing Ikea furniture) started 13 years ago and were actually sued by Ikea for advertising altering their furniture and using their name. Today, IKEA welcomes all the Ikea hacker ideas and have completely changed their minds about it and sees it as an environmentally friendly way of renovating. So if you had started that company 15 years ago just know you may have had to go through some legal hoops first. Maybe that will make you feel better about not doing it lol
I didn’t even know this was a thing! So interesting and a great idea! Love your channel and that you’re Canadian ❤️🇨🇦. Always watching, from Nova Scotia 🇨🇦
I got a bemz cover for my couch a couple of years ago. Not sure I'd recommend it to be honest. It was definitely a nice change, but I found the fabric to be too large for the couch so it's very slouchy at the base where it velcros to the couch. The colour also faded dramatically (and irregularly) within about a year, and it was in a north east facing window with a giant tree in the way. It was also kind of expensive - about $600, which was almost the price of the couch.. Eh. I still have it and I'm glad I got it, but not sure I would do it again.
I have been happily sitting here enjoying a video that explores design and decorating products from outside of the US and feeling really pleased for all the Canadians having more local options, and then you go and mention us Aussies too! It shouldn't be a big deal, but it really is! Love your work ♥️
Definitely, some stuff to look into. Needing to update a lot of our furniture but don't want to buy new. These are all great resources. Another one that I noticed you didn't talk about is Pretty Pegs. Its legs and hardware designed around IKEA furniture and they have really beautiful stuff. A lot of their stuff is pretty contemporary but have some pieces that play with that old-school quirky IKEA vibe.
Rather than semi handmade, Modern Twig and Swedebox are way better for IKEA custom cabinets and just custom cabinets in general. I renovated my garage and closets with them and I'm so happy with the products and results!!
Idea avalanche! I have never been much into contemporary styles, but the older I get, the more of a minimalist I become, so I really enjoy thinking about design in a new way!
I forgot about companies that customized IKEA pieces. The last time I checked them out, they were pretty pricey. I would definitely be interested in other companies like this. Also, your sweater matches your eyes!
I can personally vouch for Bemz! I´ve refreshed my Ikea couch twice with the help of this company! Crucially, my couch is a discontinued model but Bemz offers the slipcovers nonetheless, amazing! The last set I got was 100% linen, at a great discount, so I´ve now satisfied my dream of a linen couch! Perfect customer service, perfect delivery, just love them! (I´m in Portugal)
Hi may I ask how do you change the couch cover for the couch seat? For the ikea couch I have, I can only remove cover for cushion, but not the seating and arm area.
@@yijunhuang7299 If the model is one where the structure of the sofa has fixed upholstery, there is really nothing you can do. Are you sure? Have you looked underneath? Check for velcro!
Can we get a blooper video?! How amazing would that be? The sass! That's why I love you! lol I'm surprised you didn't put any upgrades on barn doors. hahahhahaa
Hi Nick! I found your channel 2 weeks ago and I’ve been binging all your past content. I really appreciate your fresh perspective and take on interior design. So many ideas! I just wish I had more money….
Thank you so much! This video was right on time! 🙌🏾🙌🏾 I’m about to purchase the Besta unit and of course am underwhelmed by the doors and I have been looking through some great DIY hacks to do. Now, I’m tired just thinking about it, so if I can just purchase it, GREAT! I have also been staring at the pleats on my Ektorp couch lately. lol! A new more modern slip cover would do wonders.
I am so excited to see this video. I will be having my first trip to IKEA in over a year next month. I am trying to decide what to do with our cabin's1950's kitchen. My brother and his wife redid their kitchen in their Vancouver Special a few years ago. They used IKEA cabinets and have custom bamboo fronts made. It looks fantastic.
I am so jealous of all the options that you guys have, where I live there are not so many options, and the ones that exist are very, very expensive. like always nice job on the video. thanks, love what you do.
When I was younger I had an ugly Klippan sofa so I got a Bemz slipcover and it made such a world of a difference. They've been around for a while and do quality work. I totally recommend them.
Wish I had this info three years ago. I got rid of some old tired stained lawn chair cushions a few years ago, thinking I would just buy new. Two sets of cushions and one custom set of cushions later, I regret I did not just have those old cushions re-covered or slipcovered. How was I to know they were the most comfortable chair cushions ever manufactured? I will always regret letting go of them.
I only knew about Comfortworks and SemiHandmade. Oh and Pretty Pegs. Plus some random eBay/Etsy sellers lol. Thank you so much for this list! Im so excited to check out Reform, those cut outs are life! ❤️
The newer ikea sofas have one annoying feature. The arms must have the slipcover on first, then the arm is attached. So, you have to take sofa apart every time the slipcover needs washing. Need to buy the sofas that don’t have this feature.
No! Another IKEA promo! I almost closed this week's vlog before I realized you would be showcasing how to improve on IKEA products. How great is that? Companies that offer upgrades, customization and bespoke products. Thanks for sharing the info, Nick.
We don't have IKEA because it is not really desirable in my area. Personally I think its rather generic. To each his own I guess, we have an abundance of crafts people who do custom however. I learned something and that to be was worth the video. Thanks Nick.
I did this for myself for a bathroom vanity. Bought sektion kitchen cabinets and then had a friend make custom wood fronts, I got a huge vanity for a huge discount, it's gorgeous and I get so many compliments. The interiors are very high quality and their hardware is high end.
Nick-thanks for this video! I NEED to purchase new drawer/cabinet doors for my now discontinued IKEA kitchen. I spent hours looking on my own and came up dry. You helped me immensely-Thanks so much
Check out Scherr's in Minot, ND. They do gorgeous doors for IKEA cabinets especially if you're looking for a more craftsman style. Ships to entire US & CA
I love my Comfortworks cover! The quality is very good and the color is perfect. My cat ruined the original cover for my Koarp chair, which was in a color that wasn't really right to begin with. I was able to keep the super comfy chair and it looks brand new even 6 months later.
I have ordered from Bemz in the past. The fabric feels nice, heavy and good quality but I wasn't overly impressed with the fit. I am looking to update my Bestå (and yes, that was a perfect pronunciation :) ) so loved this video. So many ideas!!
Hi Nick, 2 weeks ago I decided i was going to change/improve my rental unit interior so I decided I’d RU-vid it for advice. I’ve watched soo many of your videos & always end up laughing , your such a clown ( in a good way) & your advice is terrific especially for a novice like me. So I’d like to say thank you for being a breath of fresh air on my designing journey 😊
I was just looking at Comfort Works! Looking for a slip cover for my Friheten sofa bed that has been attacked by cats and is desperate for a refresh. This video couldn’t be better timed for me!
I can 100% recommend Comfort Works, I’ve just replaced our Vilasund sofa slipcover and it looks amazing. They have also beautiful pet-resistant options 👍
Ikea is everywhere... I wish! I bought a few itens when I visited Dublin rsrs Anyway... there's a store in Brazil that like "copies" ikea... but it a little pricy, not everybody buys there. It's tok&stock in case you wanna to look it up
Brilliant video! I think the first companies I heard of were Pretty Pegs and Semihandmade. I think there's a few Etsy sellers making sofa covers too. Not had a chance to try them yet, love the others you recommended!
Hi Nick, I love all your videos and the tips from you are very helpful. Could you please make one video about the tips when pick the armchair? Thank you so much.
Another great video, thanks Nick. I'm in Melbourne Australia, and I had never heard about comfort works. Thanks again. Would you do a home tour of your home, as you mention the various companies you've used to transform certain pieces, I'm sure it will be very appreciated.
Hi Nick! I absolutely love your channel, I learn so so much from your videos! So THANK YOU! Could you do a video on celebrity homes? eg Adele’s farm house style, tracee Ellis Ross’s Avant Garde home…I love how carefully the details are put together and would to learn how designers pick the pieces to match together
If you're in Europe also check out NewSwedishDesign, which sells inserts and more for Kallax and Billy and all their other popular lines and ships to the EU and Omformo, which sells wooden cover plates to put on top of your furniture (currently only ships to Germany, put they plan to expand their shipping)! I love how you can indivualisd your Ikea with their stuff!
I got a custom sofa cover made by a girl in China. They specify what Ikea sofa style so you don't have to measure! Found her on Etsy. Only about $243.00!
I have the Bemz linen loose fit cover for Soderhamn and it it gorgeous! Makes my sofa look like a dupe for a 3500$ sofa that I fell for but for half the price 🤑🤩
Ooo...that brown leather sofa is so nice! I bought a boucle pillow cover from Pottery Barn five years ago and I am here to tell everyone it is hard to keep from getting matted. Nick, when will you share your house plans??
We bought cabinet fronts from Scherrs, which is in the US. They were great to work with and I definitely recommend them. We got to pick Sherwin Williams paint and also grain matched walnut veneer.
@@Nick_Lewis - Yes! Bought our cabinet at Ikea and then sent our kitchen plan to them. My husband also told them the sizes of several side panels they also made of the veneer. I also went to the Reform showroom in Brooklyn and the cabinets were beautiful and looked really expensive, especially the linoleum ones, but we really wanted plain walnut slab doors. We ordered a lot of samples and Scherrs had the best finish. I think now they are doing a matte finish like the other brands you mentioned as well.
