The Best JRPGs For EVERY CONSOLE 

Ogre Battle 64 is a criminally underrated tactical RPG for the N64. Really great game that was overshadowed by so many great RPGs on the PS1. But it's the best "Ogre" game other than Tactics Ogre. It would have been worth including the N64 on this list just to mention OB64 or Paper Mario 64. They are just good RPGs (if not better) than several others on this list. I don't see why to exclude the N64, but include the Dreamcast. The RPG libraries of both systems are both pretty sparse.

My neighbor and I growing up would "play" dragon warrior 3 in the real world. we would make shop lists and stick them all over the neighborhood and go fight monsters and buy equipment. We had classes and stuff. It was badass!

personally i would add xenoblade chronicles 2 over octopath but i respect your list i just got bored of octopath around the third or forth chapter of each character

DQVIII is a great game but I would have picked Final Fantasy X. Anyway, I love this channel.

Man, I cannot imagine how hard it was picking the game for some of these consoles, especially PSone, SNES and PS2. Also, I know the N64 isn't exactly an RPG machine, but Paper Mario is pretty rock solid

Wow. Here I thought I was a big JRPG fan, but I haven't even heard let alone played most of this list. My favorite video game of all time forevermore is Final Fantasy Tactics on PS1. David is hardcore lol, thanks for the Alliance Alive recommendation. I just ordered it off eBay.

Personally, I prefer DW4 over DW3 but 1000% get how you can make the case for either one.

Runner-up on the Wii is The Last Story, in my personal taste. Same charming high quality voice acting talent, different gameplay, incredibly unique, wide and wild story, not without irritation and frustration here and there in all honesty. World and character design I cannot forget. While waiting for the next big thing it would be quite something to treat ones self with, go for it folks.

Skies of Arcadia definitely needs more love. An amazing game, fantastic world and an easy way to spend 60 hours!

I've really been interested in playing Octopath Traveler lateley. The graphics are fantastic and the music is phenomenal. Hoping it goes on sale sometime.

I really wanted to love Octopath traveler, but the party members on the bench dont get any xp from battles. This made leveling such a grind, especially because the story dungeons were subsquently harder. Anywho, i think this video calls for top 25 worst jrpgs on every console

Final fantasy 9 over 7 any day,any time

Lost Odyssey is a fantastic game. Beautyful looking too, music great, interesting progression system. The only sad thing is that unless you want to handicap yourself your final team is set in stone from the get go. There is simply no reason to not use the immortals and for the final member of the party Sed is clearly the superior option to all other characters.

I guarantee that when Lucienne's Quest for 3DO came up that everyone watching this video went...."Wait, What?". I have wanted to buy that game forever and to buy it now....I mean lets be honest, an extremely rare JRPG on a system with none of them and a console no one had makes a rare bird for sure. This game is tremendously expensive whole if you can find it and at conventions it is almost NEVER there. I have also never played this but it has always pulled me towards it. Tough choices in this list no doubt, thanks David!

I agree with a majority of this list, esp wii onward. Id have to do Persona 3 Portable for PSP & Soul Hackers for 3ds tho, aside from those a very solid list

I loved octopath, but xenoblade 2 was much better, in my eyes.

Despite some people disliking the last bit of the game, i still think Bravely Default is the best jrpg on 3ds. The music, the combat and job systems, and the characters are all amazing.

Honorable mention Star Ocean Till the End of Time is amazing on PS2.

Honestly, I don't see how you picked Rayearth over Shining Force III or Panzer Dragoon Saga for the Saturn. (For the record, I know it's your list and just your opinions.)

Great list. Its funny that recently i bought the game gear game from the 3ds store, not knowing anything about It, just bc It looked cool and was cheap.

I know this is going to sound weird, but Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a classic JRPG wrapped up in a modern setting. With the turn based combat, the jobs, the weapon crafting and upgrading, and the minigames, I swear I felt like I was playing something closer to Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy. I was surprised I enjoyed it as much if not just a little bit more than Dragon Quest XI.

Dragon Quest 4 and 5 for android or 3ds are great. Fire Emblem 3 Houses beats octopath for me.

I'm surprised you went with FF9 for PSX. Not that it isn't a good game but you had to pick it over Suikoden 2, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, etc...

Ys 4: The Dawn of Ys was released only in Japan on PC Engine, not the Turbografx-16. One of a couple games on here I'm missing a physical copy of that I want. I do have a repro of Mask of the Sun. You should have Dragon's Curse for Turbografx-16, the Wonderboy games were Metroidvanias/action rpgs before Metroidvanias existed. Skipping out on Xbox and N64 is naive. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic and Ogre Battle 64 were killer games.

Sega Saturn: Shining Force 3 (Sega is really blowing it by not release a remaster or Remake of this game, not to mention they only released the first chapter in the US), Albert Odyssey, Magic Knight Rayearth, Princess Crown Dreamcast: Skies of Arcadia, Evolution PlayStation: Final Fantasy 9(I hope Square give this the same treatment it is giving 7, sorry but not a fan of 8) PlayStation 2: Tales of Graces F, Costume Quest, Odin’s Sphere (I’m surprised this didn’t make the list) All of the Shadow Hearts games, Radiata Knights, Dragon Quest 8, PS4: Y’s 8 & 9, Final Fantasy 7 remake, Atelier Ryza

For me, it would be a flip of the coin whether I would have put Grandia on the list of best Saturn or best PlayStation RPGs. While it was PS1-exclusive in North America, I think I'd be more inclined to put it in Saturn's #1 and reserve PS1's best RPG for something like Final Fantasy IX. Or if I really wanted to be cheeky, I could rate it as the best RPG on BOTH consoles. lol Oh, but wait. Then I'd have to sacrifice Panzer Dragoon Saga for Saturn. Decisions, decisions. Maybe there's room for Grandia on a list of best cross-platform RPGs. Dragon Quest III would be a good candidate, too. By the way, I understand why you'd skip N64, but I think Paper Mario is worth a mention, even it's really the only actual RPG on the console. We... uh... don't talk about Quest 64. Shh. I mean, if Lucienne's Quest can get a nod, then Paper Mario is worthy of a shout-out.

Many people didn’t like Tales of Hearts R, but I too really enjoyed it. I also love Octopath, my favorite of the throwback RPGs published by Square Enix over the past few years (though I also liked I am Setsuna).

Great list. Disagree on Tales of Hearts R for Vita. I got the platinum, but that thing was a snooze fest for me. I would have put God Wars, Persona 4: Golden, God Eater 2: Rage Burst, Cosmic Star Heroine, Ys 8 or Ys Memories of Celceta.

I’m playing Final Fantasy 9 finally. So Epic. Suikoden 2 will always be my favorite for the PS though. I loved Ni no Kuni. I want to play Dragon Quest 11 and Octopath traveler when I get a switch

Very happy to see Radiant Historia on the list. Had Yoko as the composer and boy are those battle themes good. Played it on the DS back in 2013 or so. Been meaning to go back in with its Perfect Chronology remaster. Also I guess a game that wasn't on the list but I really enjoyed is Suikoden 1 (yes I know people think II or III are better but still)

Agree with almost all, but here's where I differ: 1. TurboGrafx-CD: The Legend of Heroes (Ys IV wasn't released on the Turbo, but I know what you mean) 2. Saturn: Panzer Dragoon Saga (Shining the Holy Ark is close) 3. PS1: Vagrant Story 4. N64: Paper Mario 5. PS2: Valkyrie Profile 2 6. Wii: The Last Story 7. DS: Dragon Quest IX 8. Vita: Odin Sphere

You had me at Chrono Trigger, then picking FF IX over FF VII on the Playstation?! BALLSY and COMPLETLY CORRECT! The only thing I disagree on is the lack of Star Ocean games on this list. I would have picked Star Ocean 3 over Dragon Quest VIII, but I can accept that difference as the latter is still a good game. If not that, I would have picked Star Ocean 4 for the PS3 over Ni No Kuni, or for the Xbox360 over Lost Odyssey. Lost Odyssey is still a good pick though, and I've never played Ni No Kuni, so I cant make any judgements on that one.

Rayearth is a good little game, but snubbing Grandia, Panzer Dragoon Saga, or even Shining Force III is outrageous.

I have to strongly disagree with most of your list. The first few I’ll give you up to the SNES but the PSX had so much better JRPGs it’s ridiculous you totally over looked Lunar 2 which was way better than FF9 and honestly the best RPG on the system, Legend of Legaia, Chrono Cross, Star Ocean the Second Story, Grandia, Wild arms 1 and 2, Tactics Ogre, Saga Frontier 1 and 2, ( not bad games by any means) Breath of Fire 3 and 4, Suikoden 1and 3, anD Legend of Legaia. For the PS2 there was better games than DQ8, Rogue Galaxy which was by the same team behind DQ8 Level 5, Persona 3 and 4, Shin Megan’s Tensie 3, actually any SMT game that we got in the west for PS2 Wild Arms 5. For the PSP I think that the Legend of Heroes Trails of the Sky series, YS seven or Oath in Felgahna were better. And for the PS3 there were plenty of Better JRPGs better than Ni no Kuhni, like Tales of Graces F or Tales of Xilia, White Knight Chrinicles, Demon Souls. For the Wii I like Xenoblade as well you really should Try the other games that were part of the games petitioned to be released in the west along side Xenoblade Like Pandora’s Tower, or Lost Story you might like them more. ArcRise Fantasia is good too but the US VAs were pretty bad. As for the PS4 I think FF7 R and Persona 5 are better than DQ11

Calling the N64 trash? I guess maybe if you only play RPGs but even then Ogre Battle 64 is worth a mention. PS1 was probably a hard console to choose for but I think you picked the right game. Rounding out the top 3 would be Lunar and Suikoden 2. I also agree with your SNES, Dreamcast, PS2, DS, X360, PS3, PS4 picks Disagree on Gamcube, I would choose Skies of Arcadia Legend or Thousand Year Door. GBA I would have gone with FF6 Advance or Fire Emblem (the one with Lyn and Eliwood) PSP.... I would say Jeanne D'Arc or maybe Trails in the Sky 1, Vita I say Persona 4 Golden, Switch I am really torn between Octopath or FE 3 houses. Really great video, and not just because I agree with most of your picks lol. I really hope Xenoblade X comes to switch because based on your recommendation I want to play it. Also this video inspired me to order a copy of Alliance Alive (albeit for the PS4) because the way you talk about that game really makes me want to check it out.

Nice opinions!! Alliance Alive is currently my all time non SMT fave JRPG on the 3DS and im currently enjoying the heck out of it. And FFL2 or SaGa 2 is my all time fave GB RPG & Lufia-TLR is my favorite GBC RPG which Im also playing thru on my 3DS at night. Shame the series went so far downhill afterwards. Also good on you to bravely stick to your guns with preferring FF9 to FF7. FF9 is also my all time favorite Final Fantasy and my best friend's too & is incredibly under-rated. However, for the Game Gear I could not get into Defenders of Oasis at all and quit at like the 4th chapter while I just loooove me some Shining Force Sword Of Hajya. The Shining Force series deserves lots more love, even on your channel.

Good list, but surprised with Magic Knight Rayearth. It's a nice game, but there were many others, including Lunar which you mentioned during the review of it. On the top of my head: Shining the Holy Ark, Shining Force 3, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Lunar 1&2, Grandia, Dark Savior, and Albert Odyssey.

"not trash like the N64" What u don't like "classics" like Quest 64 and...idk...lol? I'm a biased asshole who likes FF5 as my favorite FF and Earthbound is my favorite RPG on the SNES. I also like Phantasy Star Online more than Skies of Arcadia.

Final Fantasy Legend 2 was my favourite game in my childhood. I have yet to pick it up again on Switch, but I am playing Witcher 3, first. I strongly with almost every pick you made except for PSX, PS2, and Switch. I couldn't get into Dragon Quest 8, Final Fantasy 9, or Octopath Traveler. I liked the graphics on each, just not the characters, pacing, story, or gameplay. To each their own, though. I do agree that Playstation 3 was a huge let down overall.

I always thought Magic Knight rayearth was a joke on sega saturn, there are probably 50 better RPG on the console !
