What a pure rendition... technically perfect: not a single fret buzz, not one arpeggio missed, perfect vocal pitch and words... and artistically: I'm just incredibly moved by this performance. Only one guy and his bouzouki but the whole Ireland is in there...
I’ve listened to this 1000+ times and it gets better every time. RU-vid needs to develop a way for us to praise Daiori some more. Brilliant brilliant brilliant mate
Listened to this obsessively prior to my initial voyage to Ireland from Missouri, USA. Upon landing I spotted a hare and assumed it good luck. What a lucky token it was. The pints were sweet, the whiskey smooth and the company full of craic.
As a hunter myself I found myself rooting for the white hare throughout the song. Tremendous job on this one it's a shame only 4.4 million people experienced excellence
Daoiri is the only singer I've ever heard who could sneer and sing beautifully at the same time. I love the contempt as he sings about fine motor car. Lovely voice! And I love the Irish bazouki sound, it seems to be strummed like a banjo.
How on earth does this have negative ratings? Absolutely outrageous. He is one of the most talented Irish musicians I have ever heard and I have messaged him before and he is an absolute gentleman. Absolutely love it man.
Nothing takes you down into the lowland underbrush more than this song. I can see the fine motorcar and the long boots and wool jackets of the finely dressed men. Best of luck to the fine white hare.
Born in the mountains of North Carolina (USA) our family would rabbit hunt in the winter. There was no greater pleasure than to see our lone Beagle give chase to the rabbit. When I hear "Creggan White Hare" at age 70 it reminds me of my childhood years and the great times of my childhood years. What a beautiful piece of folk music. I never get enough of listening to the "Creggan White Hare". Thank you Daoiri Farrell.
Greetings from Ireland. Glad to hear this song resonates with your own life in NC. Once I'm a bottle or two in, I have to play this song. It's a live performance - a snapshot in time. I don't believe he ever played it better than this, because it is nothing short of masterful. And someone was there to record it. Hallelujah!
Very few musicians can actually bring tears to my eyes, being a musician myself I havent heard such a beautiful sound in a long time. Glad I found this artist.
@@sailingalbatross7642 Literally had to pause the video to write this comment as I just got goosebumps lol. I really wish I could find the studio version of Pat Rainey song Daoiri recorded though. Found out I'm like 8 percent Irish too. Probably why I drink so much whiskey lol. I digress. Wish he could come to America someday!
I love Irish folk music. It reminds me of our sweet Appalachian folk we have in the States. Same sound, same rhythm, and same topics of life being sung. It’s beautiful stuff
idk what it is with Irish music, in particular this song... it gives so many emotions, like on one hand it makes me sad and homesick even though I'm not Irish myself, and on the other hand it gives hope, warmth and a feeling of being grateful for what I have
There are few folk who wander this rock who can make their talents and trades look effortless. This young man is one of those. I just played this for my old boy and he was just in awe hes been singing folk for decades no professional more so just down the local to bring about a good atmosphere through some storytelling songs such as this one.
Agreed! truly fantastic. Check out Mairtin de Coghain as well, from Cork. He's fantastic ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pAb6yzq7xMc.html
I think this is a song in the great Irish tradition; against all odds the underdog wins the day. It speaks to the part of us all that feels how unfair life can be, and how uplifting it is when the little person gets a win.
My father is from Creggan and he was a musician. It would have been his 60th birthday last weekend and I'd never heard this version until then... haven't stopped playing it since ❤️👌
@@philiplevins6702 thanks and sorry to hear about your dad. It's great how the music and musical associations (songs they played, music/artists they listened to, etc) can make you feel like they're their again/closer to them. It's a great gift
It's St Patricks day. The pubs are closed. I can't go to Cheltenham cause we're still locked down. My guitar is lying idle and there's no-one to listen anyway. I'm happy 'cause I've just remembered that bottle of Jamesons in the cupboard. Sláinte Daoiri !
Sunday 4.22am Coffs Harbour NSW Australia state wide lockdown and this pops into my feed. Salute Jamieson! Best wishes, a potato famine 3rd generation descendant.
Doesn't fecking matter, British, Irish, African, Asian we all share the same drive, blood and toil. I'm an Irishman Dublin born and never have left. How dare you ask someone that question? What does it matter? Ye made an arse of yourself.
The RU-vid algorithm never ceases to amaze me. It feeds me the airport delayed flight vid, and then this. Over 3 million views on a channel that has 5k subscribers and hasn't released a video in 8 years. This has to be the best recording of a folk song I have ever heard, not to mention the best version of this song. Even Farrell's other recordings of the same song don't hold a candle to this one. Something so genuine about it.
I grew up rabbit hunting in Pennsylvania. Every time I hear this song it reminds me of one Thanksgiving morning my brother and I went hunting with our beagle. I flushed a rabbit and smacked my gun into a tree trying to get a shot off. The dog immediately picked up the trail and the chase was on. The rabbit and the dog were at it for two and a half hours. We never even came close to getting another shot. Finally we had to pull the dog off (because she was never going to quit) and go home for Thanksgiving dinner.
They were well-heeled with their fine motor cars, larders full of food yet chasing the fearful bonny hare for fun for hours. After losing sight of their humanity they also lost the bonny white hare.
Absolutely true. To me it's a perfect example of pathos; this song nearly moves me to tears. My world is much different than his and our backgrounds differ significantly (I'm from Montana, live in Madrid) but I sing songs like this (or say Cat Stevens' Oh Very Young) to my little three-year and 10-month-old daughters because of the joy and other feelings they bring me. I'm glad to see Daoirí getting the recognition that he deserves.
Do you guys know what this song is about ? In Ireland we have a sport called hare coursing , the dog chases the hare and which ever dog gets out in front and turns the hare wins
Verse 1] In the lowlands of Creggan there lives a white hare As swift as the swallow that flies through the air You may tramp the world over but none to compare To the pride of old Creggan, that bonnie white hare [Verse 2] One clear autumn morning, as you will suppose Oh, the red golden sun o’er the green mountain rose Barney Conway came down and he did declare "This day I’ll put an end to the bonnie white hare!" [Verse 3] So he searched through the lowlands and down through the glens All among the wild ditches where the white hare had ends Till at last coming down o’er the heather so fair From behind the wild thistle out jumps the white hare [Verse 4] “Bang! Bang!” went his guns and his dogs he slipped too As swift as the wind o'er the green mountain flew But his dogs soon came back and it made Barney sigh For he knew that the white hare had bid him goodbye [Verse 5] And we’re some jolly sportsmen down here from Pomeroy From Cookstown, Dungannon, and likewise the Moy "With our pedigree greyhounds we’ve travelled from far And we’ve come down to Creggan in our fine motor car." Verse 6] Well into the lowlands these huntsmen did go In search of the white hare they'd look high and low Till at last Barney Conway from a bog bank so rare Shouted out to the huntsmen: “There lies the white hare!” [Verse 7] So they called up their greyhounds from off the green lea And Barney and the huntsmen all jumped high with glee It was there on the bog bank all gathered around Seven dogs and nine men did that poor hare surround [Verse 8] Oh no wonder the white hare did tremble with fear As she stood on her hind legs she would raise her big ears As she stood on her hind legs with one gallant spring She jumped over the greyhounds and broke through the ring [Verse 9] Well that chase it went on, it was a beautiful view As swift as the wind o’er the green mountain flew But those pedigree greyhounds they didn’t run far They came back and went home in their fine motor car [Verse 10] Then there came another man and you all know him well His name was Mick Kelly with the Bonnie Black Bell "Oh in search of the white hare today I’ll have fun I'll bet fifty to one my Black Bell of her turn." Verse 11] Five turns the hare got then from Bonnie Black Bell And the sixth one was given around John Haughey’s well It was there we lost sight of the hare and the dog And then ten minutes later came o’er the black bog [Verse 12] Well that chase it went on it was great for to see The white hare and the black dog both roamed light and free Till she travelled to Esker where she knew the lands well And to Bonnie Black Nella there soon bid farewell [Verse 13] Oh and now to conclude and to finish this rhyme I hope you’ll forgive me for singing all this while If there’s any amongst you in Carrick more fair Please drink up a health to that bonnie white hare
There are two small errors in this transcript and they've been repeated on the various sites the lyrics can be found on. They are Verse 10 I'll bet 50 to 1 my black bell "will" her turn. Verse 13 If there's any amongst you in "Carrickmore" fair.

Still coming back and listening time and time again. It takes me to another place. I can envision being out in the hills. The dogs and hare running through the fog and the mist. You can almost feel it.
Absolutely amazing. Great voice, slick bouzouki and lovely tune. This has been on repeat for hours and now I'm trying to learn it. Great to see a new generation of Irish folk musicians to continue on from the Andy Irvines etc.
Anyone who plays knows how hard it is to sing and play and omfg this man doesn't miss step..no fret buzz no arpeggio missed and every single sylible is hit... hats off to you...
Hairs are stood up on my neck listening to this for the third time in 24 hours. Thank you for showing us the beauty of the Creggan white hare's struggle. A perfect performance of great music.
Seems I need to hear this once every few days. Brings tears of joy to my eyes for some reason--lovely. Thanks for the gift of your fine playing and voice, Daoiri!
Daoiri Farrell's voice is so clear and pure. It brings to mind the clear and perfect sound of a church bell on a cold clear Sunday morning. Just about perfect.
Such an incredible rendition of this beautiful song. I love the story of it. Its either just a particularly strong hare, or it could also be a nature spirit, or a metaphor about how man tries to conquer nature but is always one step behind
That's how I take it, its nearly like he feels guilty about his hunting and now respects the hare for her strength and determination. Hares were sacred in Celtic Mythology, it's our oldest Irish animal too.
Love Irish music even thou I am Greek/ Canadian. There is such sadness in the voices, and the words. I always have an images of someone sitting on a rock over looking the ocean with a strong wind blowing their hair, and this image is always black, and white.
In this CV Pandemic, I only heard this the 1st time yesterday on RTE and I find this song, and in particular his voice , something inspirational and helps me escape from this apocalyptic scenario that is present . Thank you Daoiri and be safe everyone
Same here. I found it randomly on yt and don't know how often I've listened to it since. For me a piece of hope for the time after this pandemic. Stay save everyone... best wishes from Germany.
