My mod is to remove the frame and put the bag on a high quality external frame of my own. I learned a long time ago that the thing I could own is a quality external frame, with a shelf. I can fasten any bag to it, or a pack basket, or even a trash can. When I get to camp, I can remove the bag and carry firewood on the frame.
i must say i loves the easy way you added the kidney belt to the LK35. i have one myself and has been thinking about adding one to it. and i will also add that the no stitch way is the way to go in my eyes as it preserves the bag it self as well as also makes the mod it self detatchable would the need come, thanks for a great and easy idea bank
anders almström thank you. I've done a 2nd video on a lk35 bag if you change your mind and decide to stitch it. It adds a detachable side pouches. If you just get some military straps that's the best so far to sew with.
Good easy Mods Joe,next time you are in the Army surplus try pick up a webbing yoke. That works really well rigged to the frame.It also gives you a secondary carry to take it off and attach side molle pouches. ATB Del
Hi pal nice 👍I've got the lk35 love it I've got pouches haven't put them on yet I've never had a problem with the straps. I've got a old roll matt cut to the size of the bag .and put it inside it stops things poking through 👍
+Jonah 365 outdoors I bought 2. One I have a frame upgrade and one I have a pouch upgrade. I used Alice pouches on sides but they can zip off and you can carry them on its own.
Great ideas! I dont sew, and dont know anyone who does, but I think I can do these mods...velcro is your friend. LOL. A cheap and easy non-permanent mod for the shoulder straps that I did for mine...seat belt pads. You can get them cheap at just about any automotive store or WalMart. They attach by velcro and make a HUGE difference. Easy peasey.
+m1cajah The shoulder pads didn't bother me. I think because it sits so well on my hip. Look at the one I did with rocket plc pouches. You can make a second ruck at camp.
+Chris Morris sounds good. At bottom of the bag I want to make it so it stands up when I put it down and not roll forward with the weight. Normally I just put it on a tree but raining loads here. Thanks for watching.

I've got this bag and i love it. i haven't done any mods to it as I didn't want to ruin it. I love what you have done and may even nick the ideas ;-). I do have the yolk system which works very well with the bag. I'm very pleased with it. Question: How come if you steal one person's idea it's called plagiarism, if you steal a lot of peoples ideas then it's referred to as research? atb phil
wildphil64 I liked it so much I bought a second one to mod. Now I went from a 100 litre bag to a lk35 with pouches. In ref to the question. In RU-vid it's not stealing an ideas. You were INSPIRED by that person to try the idea. :-) everyone does it. Just put a twist to it.
I know them as rocket pouches. They are the ones that go on a bergen. Just find a bergan ruck and in its description it should have the name. they are often sold with the plce straps to make a ruck also.
Just gave you a sub mate. Put a waistband on mine now, it makes a massive difference. Waiting for the side pouches to come this week. I Also will be doing a video on the pack. I will give you a mention in the video Atb Paul.

Good video, and you've done similar mods to myself. I'd got fed up of having a sweaty back with my usual rucksack (especially in summer) and decided to look around for a retro external frame sack, but as they've gone out of fashion, I had little joy, just battered old ones on ebay. A few months ago, earlier this year, I found and got a canvas LK35 from Military Mart (www.militarymart.co.uk), plus an Army hippo pad to put under a waist belt and a Swiss Army Ranger stove. They've just got another load of LK35s in, if folk are searching for a retailer. They come in two or three grades (1 being the best) and they're the cheapest prices I've found, plus they now make their own hip belt for them for another £15. I rang up to ask questions and order, they're good to deal with and the gear was well packed, spot on and delivered promptly. I too liked the frames design, but as it is made of steel, rather than aluminium or alloy, to be tough enough for the military role (eg being chucked in/out of the back of trucks etc) it's weight of 1.1kg (2.4lbs) is considerable, if you're trekking over 10 miles or so, it adds weight I don't need to carry. I'm also not going to be treating my bag to excessive rough use, and that's why I made a much lighter (about 500g) one out of UPVC 22mm plumbing tube utilising friction fit corner and T joints (bought from a plumbers merchant). I sprayed the white tubing with rattle can paints. I can take it apart and put it in the bag along with all the webbing for storage, or to make it more compact if I want to take it with me on a bike tour. I made a video of it after I'd done my initial mods to the gear (search 'Swedish Army LK35 Rucksack & Swiss Army Ranger Stove Modifications') and since then I utilise a 50mm suitcase nylon webbing luggage strap for the hip belt over the top of the hippo pad and I've added two 25mm nylon webbing straps, pop riveted to the UPVC frame, spaced to take the two side pockets from my other sack to give me another 10-15L of capacity that fasten up at the front of the sack. Handy for taking a water bottle or anything I might need quickly without having to delve for it, like my poncho or gaiters, torch, maps, food, Stanley cook pot, stove and brew kit etc. Having detachable pockets and hip belt makes the sack more flexible for lighter loads on a day walk, or travelling really light with the minimum of gear. Re: waterproofing the sack, as mine's canvas, I've given it a light rub down with Fjällräven Greenland wax, then melted it into the fabric with a hair drier to make it showerproof, and as I use a poncho that goes over the sack, unless I was to drop the sack in a river or similar, that is more than adequate. Years of experience has shown me that no rucksack is entirely waterproof if you are out in heavy wind driven rain for long periods, then there's going to be some seepage at least, even with the very best rucksacks with use over a few years. However to allow for accidents like dropping the sack, or it being blown over into deep water, for that reason I also use a plastic rucksack liner. These can be had cheaply from outdoor retailers, or one or two of the heavier gauge large tie garden waste bin liners or even a plastic survival bag doubled back on itself will do the trick. Belts and braces placing anything I need to keep dry in separate plastic bags, Tupperware type boxes (First Aid kit, fire lighting materials etc inside the liner) are the best methods I've found. I use a breathable bivvy bag under pocho,/s or basha for shelter, so I don't bother with an unbreathable plastic survival bag. I'm 63 and my experience is ex armed forces, leisure rock climbing, long distance backpacking, cycle camp touring and a decade as a volunteer mountain rescue team member.
