This is my first viewing of this ceramic artist - it intrigued me enough to go find out more after seeing this - I found a very interesting comment about this particular work of his, "It has been named "skin of elephant" (elephant skin). These pieces are thrown, but they are pushed outwards while they are being made, to crack the surface; they give the feeling of dry burnt earth. "* I think that explains quite a bit right there. In the comments here some do not understand what Terry Davies is creating at all. That is understandable, as he is coming from many decades of experience working with clay first as a production potter and then as a studio potter (he truly is a master potter) and he is also using an aesthetic which is far more Asian than Western. Personally, I love clay and all which can be done with it, and for the last few years especially, I seem to be somewhat obsessed with highly textured surfaces. I also very much appreciate the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi described in Wikipedia "In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi (侘 寂) is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete"." For me, this artist definitely explores those types of beauty in his work. I hope this helps some of those who are perhaps just beginning to love clay, but don't have much experience working with it or viewing ceramic artwork yet to understand somewhat why this artist is viewed as a master potter. BTW, I love the textured surface of his teapot, which is shown in focus for only a second near the beginning of this video - 0:26. * terrydavies.it/about-me/

beauty is in the eye of the beholder, here i see an artist who has not constrained himself by pre-constructed ideas of other people, good for him!

Does anyone know what he's applying to the thrown piece? I assume the first layer is sodium silicate, followed by colored slip. Any thoughts?

FYI it's called "master" because he is able to mass produce it so quickly. It he spent time on each he could make it look impressive but look how many he is making in such a short time. What so you expect?

i dont want to be disrespectfull but... the best or master? I do this work and I can say that this guy, isnt best not in the forming on the lathe not on decoration onestly. I had students (kids) who after one hour managed to shape the same shapes
@pedrozisels
@pedrozisels 5 лет назад
I think the diference between he and your students is the intentional form. A kid dont do this kind of irregular (more organic or dinamic) shape consciously. He obviously does.

The God of heaven and earth is Elder Park Tae Sun. Do you know God's name? In the West, in the fear of the name of God, in the east, of the glory of God. Here is the name of God. It means that God came out of man. Is there anyone in the world who announced that I am God? In 1980, Elder Park Tae Sun declared, "I am God!" I will reveal to the world that Korea is the East, the place to fear the glory of God. In Israel, the East is the Republic of Korea. A country that is not destroyed here forever is a country where the sun will lose its light and will emerge afterward! It is the country of Park Tae Sun. Do you know that the candlestick of Israel came to the East as the East? You will see that in the Republic of Korea there is a new, never-destroying country. God's Word of Man's Creation, the Word of the Alien, the Word of the End Times, and the Word of the eternal world are recorded on the following website. Five hundred years ago, the book of the prophets written by the teacher of Nasagoda, the name of God is shown in the file. 1. IIn the above passage, God's name clearly appears in the prophecies name is.It does not matter whether you believe this or not.God will judge you and build an eternal kingdom. www.paikmagongja.org/index.html ru-vid.com/show-UCO_rEMr4UmnefwdY95cVJPg

Im currently learning pottery and sculpture and I think art is subjective, but what I would like to say is that this was the most angry pottery I've ever seen, the way the clay was handled was so aggressive, and instead of peaceful serenity on the maker's face there was nothing but a scowl. The whole point of this artform is nurturing and shaping with care and love, letting it grow and show it's true beauty with just some help. This was forceful and there seemed to be a disdain for clay and the end product seemed as angry as the master. I would not like one of a those items in my house. Iwish the best of luck to this master.

Devyani Singh I recommend you to check out more about the history of this artist before to comment something like that. Good luck.
@Cheiko18
@Cheiko18 7 лет назад
Matteo Bigi the history has nothing to do with what I see right in front of me. Every other pottery artist I've seen and met do have anger, which is true with every artist, But that anger gets sublimated through art. This, on the other hand was extreme anger targeted towards the clay instead of anger getting solved through the creation of what pleases the person which isn't possible in everyday life. I'm not going to get personal, but anger is an emotion which must be expressed no matter what society would like us to believe.
@Cheiko18
@Cheiko18 6 лет назад
Clara Bonnet Clara Bonnet whatever reason you are especially getting pissed off with so far only my comment tells me more about you than anything else. Tonnes of people commented basically the same thing. And ok, you're tough with the clay but look at the expression on his face. This mindset of controlling everything that I am sorry to say I mostly find in Europe is astounding as the general rudeness and forcefulness that comes with it is just not warranted. Like with the clay... And also me. Also reading about him shows he has been doing pretty well so I don't think that "it's a job and people need to eat" argument really applies to a pretty well established artist. And btw who wants to meet you on the internet in the first place?
@johnkmatsch
@johnkmatsch 6 лет назад
All forms of human emotion and expressions are valid as a force for artistic creation. Just as interesting, i find written and verbal expressions to be a reflection of ones inner world of fear and hurt especially when critical and negative.
