Is there a city bus system in Mckinney?

I've lived in McKinney Texas for over 20 years. The price of homes and the cost of living is great compared to a lot of places. If you are moving here from out of state, there are some things you might want to consider before moving here. Cons It's hot and sunny most of the year so you will need your air-conditioning running most of it. Most homes in Mckinney were built in the past 25 year and there are trees that provide no shade whatsoever. This means the sun will beat down on your home. It's good in months like October - March and even on sub freezing nights because you never really have to turn the thermostat above 68f. Days, however because the sun will heat your home up fast, the AC might need to be turned on even on days when the highs are below 70 degrees. Opening a window does not cool your house down. We have invested in solar power to help eliminate the rising cost of electricity due to no regulation whatsoever on electricity providers. Our electric bill went from $300 a month to $800, not because we used more electricity, just because they raised the rates. Because it is 90+ degrees from the end of May -September, going outside is very uncomfortable and sometimes just dangerous. So if you are the outdoorsy type and like golf, hiking, biking, fishing or even just sitting on your backyard porch, you can forget it because of the risk of heat stroke and poor air quality. It is a great place to raise kids because of the education and low crime rates, but you will have to find things for them to do inside during these months. There are plenty of parks and outdoor recreation areas, but you will usually find them empty during the sunny hot days. On hot days and weekends malls and movie theaters are always crowded along with libraries, bowling allies, indoor shooting ranges, and even public swimming pools. You will need a car. You might think, that's okay, I can just drive anywhere. But think about what I just said above. If you have kids and need to entertain them safely or maybe just want to entertain yourself, you and every other person (4+ million of us) in the DFW area need to drive there. Once at your destination after fighting through traffic, you will need to find a parking spot. There is usually a 20 or 30 minutes drive to anywhere, providing there isn't an accident or too many other cars trying to exit a highway ramp that causes a lot of congestion. I spent 3 hours driving home from the airport which is supposed to be a 40 minute drive multiple times. If you need to commute to work, have a doctor's appointment or job interview give yourself at least 1/2 hour wiggle room for traffic. There is public transportation in some places in Collin County, but not McKinney. There used to be, but for whatever reason they discontinued the service. They have absolutely no plans to extend the DART light rail up here... because they think public transportation brings crime to the community I guess. There are homeless here. If you are thinking, it's a suburb... how are there homeless? Homelessness can happen to anyone at anytime. There is no such thing as job security, especially in Texas because it is a right to work state. There aren't any tent cities or people dedicating on the streets like in LA or Philly, but they are here. Pros: Mckinney is very diverse. That meaning we have people living here from all over the country and the world if that matters to you. Violent crime is almost nonexistent and crime is very low. Police and fire are quick to respond. The police will pull you over in a heartbeat if they see you speeding however. When it gets dark, and if you want to walk in the park, you don't have to worry about being robbed or jumped. You do have to worry about bobcats, skunks, and coyotes due to large amounts of tree lines that surround the housing developments. I have had many a bobcat and rabbit trigger my ring camera and I live in a pretty large housing development. Schools are pretty good on the subjects they teach. So far they aren't banning books, are allowing American and Texas history to be taught without restrictions, and have good sports and after school activities. That being said, some languages like Latin are only taught as an AP level class in one high-school. There are plenty of big box stores for your shopping needs, including a Sam's Club and Costco within 3 miles of each other. You never really have to leave McKinney There are a lot of places to eat in McKinney and a lot of different cuisines. From Tex-Mex to Ethiopian, you'll find it here. The people are friendly here. You don't have to worry about sporting your political candidate sign on your lawn. My neighbor puts up his Republican sign and me Democratic and we still chat, borrow sugar and have drinks together. Mckinneyians are very educated and respect different political views. There are many places of worship. What ever your religion, you'll find a safe place to worship here. Welcome to Mckinney.

I've really been contemplating Mckinney as some family lives there. I'll be honest, not being able to sit outside and enjoy the sun is a turn off. I was hoping Mckinney was far north enough to where there were only a few months of unberable heat. What would the months of unbearable heat be?
@sidboyplays7614
@sidboyplays7614 Год назад
@@sethsha7826 The highs have been over 100 degrees F for over a month now. Last week I went to the market @ 7 PM, the sun was setting and it was still above 100. I love to ride my bike and I love the outside. I can only do it in the Spring (March and April) and fall (October) or after 9 pm when it starts to cool off and there is no light, and I ride with lights on my bike , but I have been side swiped by cars a few times now because they weren't able to see me. (despite the "Share the Road" signs here, cars still think they have the right of way.) For 9 months out of the year, Air Conditioning is a necessity. It does get cool here and even went down to 10 F this winter, but it was only for a few days. There are things to do to keep cool. Going to the pool (outside) isn't one of them The water is usually just as warm the air. People dump ice in outside pools to cool them off. Malls, movies, and even gong to Walmart are ways people stay cool here. And there are even some indoor Ice Rinks in nearby Frisco and Plano. There are a lot of parks, here in McKinney, but on hot days, they are empty. McKinney is in North Texas, yes, but still further south than Los Angeles and even Phoenix. The main difference, is that we get more rainfall here than California and Arizona, so there isn't as much drought. We do have burn bans, because Dallas/FTW is even more windy than Chicago. So even grilling and BBQ which are a Texas staple can be a no go for weeks in the summer. Like I said, I've lived here for over 20 years and it is great place to raise a family. You just have to get creative in ways to keep fit and entertained. McKinney is by far the most beautiful city in North Texas with the trees and the parks and the nature. I mean, coyotes, bob cats and bunnies roam the neighborhoods here; (keep your pets in at night) While I was riding my bike one night I could have sworn I saw a mountain lion walk across the a the street. It's gait and tail was that of a large cat. I turned my bike around the other way, not anxious to find out if it was an actual large cat. I miss the cold of the north. I mean you can always put another blanket over you to get warm in the cold. But in the summer heat of Texas, it doesn't matter how much you strip down, you will still be hot unless there is air con and you have to keep it running all day... so get solar or expect to pay a premium in energy bills.

You lost me at the 800 dollar a month electric bill, which means the power company is corrupt. And the homeless people, and the “diversity thing. We are dealing with all of this now in California and I don’t need to relocate to another state to deal with the same exact things!! Thanks for your help. The town is beautiful but it’s growing too fast and unfortunately I see the future of this beautiful town. It’s already happened to mine here in California. Santa Clarita, a former beautiful town that was all law enforcement and film industry workers, Republican bedroom community, turned into a “diverse” 240k+ crowded city with too many people and now homeless. That diversity you speak of will change your city radically… and not for the better.

I was hoping to find McKinney a nice little town that wasn’t turning into the exact same thing the suburban towns in California have turned into. What you are describing McKinney as is EXACTLY the same thing as what happened to Santa Clarita California. Used to be a small Republican bedroom community 30 miles north of Los Angeles. Most people live here are law enforcement and film industry folks. Was less than 100k when we moved there. Now it’s a “diverse” hellhole of mass population upwards of 250k, traffic jams and freeway infrastructure not able to sustain the population, crime is rising, and the new Los Angeles mayor has been moving homeless people to the outskirts of our town who live in our city and we see them all over our bike paths and river beds. The housing market has gone through the roof, and people are rude. This isn’t the California I grew up in. Protect your Texas and stop marketing it for greed. You will have the same problems. My friend lived in McKinney several years ago and told us to look into it for retirement, but unfortunately all I see here is the beginnings of the same thing that happened to our city. The other thing I see are realtors marketing properties almost as high as California prices, which is ridiculous. While you can still get more for your dollar in other states, I find it laughable that realtors in Texas think they can ask upwards of a million for a house sitting on the prairie in the middle of nowhere. The big difference: we are 45 minutes away from Malibu, Santa Monica, Ventura, Pacific Palisades. We’re 45 minutes from Beverly Hills, L.A and LAX. We have access to Metrolink for cheap transportation to LA. We’re 4 hours from Mammoth Lakes for world class skiing, or an hour away to Big Bear Lake for those mountains to ski. It’s 2 hours to San Diego, and 5 hours to Las Vegas. Palm springs golf is 3 hours away. We have miles of local hiking and biking for days. Our city built 80 miles of cycling trails alone…What does McKinney offer for the high prices you’re charging on real estate? You will soon no longer be able to sell your city as a getaway from the rat race like California, because you are becoming another California. I can see why people flock to our state, as it has much to offer. But it saddens me to see Texas realtors raping people financially who are fleeing places like California because they feel the need to flee their native state from overcrowding. I guess it’s a Palm Springs retirement plan for me…
@LIVINGINDALLAS
@LIVINGINDALLAS 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for sharing your experiences and insights into the real estate market and the importance of preserving Texas' charm. It's disheartening to hear about the challenges in your California town. Like many areas, McKinney is evolving, and your concerns about potential parallels with California are valid. Communities must grow sustainably, maintaining their unique character. At the moment, McKinney still has much to offer and plenty of room for someone contemplating their retirement plan. Best of luck with your plan for Palm Springs if that's final. Keep us posted if there's a change of heart in the future.

I don't like diversity as a selling point. Diversity for the sake of it is not a benefit. I am biracial and grew up in Chicago. So, the last thing I want is everyone to be like me. I'm fleeing for Prosper. McKinney on the Frisco border is becoming dirty imo. 😳
