The best MIDI controller depends on your setup. These are the best options for drummers, guitar players, dedicated playback techs - anyone running tracks.
MIDI controllers have come a long way in the last 20 or so years. They used to be just giant keyboards, until M-Audio came along and revolutionized things (they really don’t get enough credit for that).
Fast forward to 2023, there are endless options for almost any context. I’m breaking down the best MIDI controllers for running stracks on stage that I’ve found. These are broken up into three categories:
Best MIDI Controllers for Guitar Players
MIDI Controllers for Drummers (there’s really only one option here, and it’s universally used and loved)
Tabletop MIDI Controllers (for anyone who can set their MIDI controller on a flat surface)

As a drummer with OCD having a laptop next to me to monitor Ableton once in a while, for me, the LioBoxx or a small midi controller such as a Presonus Atom 16 pad controller strictly to play, stop (or stop track in Ableton) next and so on is best for me. The SPD-SX is great however if you want to utilize all the pads if you want to perform loops sounds or samples, you're running out of space to do so. That me though lol!

The mini would be a great option for you in that case if you’re just looking for transport control.

I have been using a Line 6 FBV Shortboard MKii for years and have loved it. It’s finally starting to have some minor inconsistency issues with a couple of the switches. I have might have to click them 2 or 3 times to get them to launch. Now, I’m in the market for something similar, but updated. I’m very disappointed with the limited amount of footswitch options for guitar players.

Thanks Will 😊 As a playback engineer, I’m still a BCR 2000 fan. I love the tactile nature of the buttons and the ability to dial in controllers easily. For something smaller I’m interested in the Faderfox series.

Thanks for watching and sharing Vincent! I’ve never had a big need for faders or encoders, but both of those look like killer options!

Just subscribed, nice video! I personally use an MP Controller for both live and studio use. It allows me to control both tracks and devices in a really nice and neat way :)

Have you considered the Elgato stream deck ? You can download a midi plug in and have endless triggers and custom naming of each trigger since it’s an LED screen. It’s a fantastic table top option.

The stream deck is great, I use it everyday! The big downside to the stream deck for tracks is that it doesn’t send any info and you have to have companion or the sd app running to send info. Plus that visual feedback on the Lio is hard to beat!

Hats off to M-Audio and the Metro sequencer squad 😂 Also to Ableton for pressing…blowing the lid off music production and PUSHing on. Thanks for your run down too…super 2023 useful🖤😎🙌🐇

Would the lioboxx work well with iconnectivity playaudio12? Im sure the buttons would work but how about tthe screen on the device ? Would it be able to show whats going on in ableton or does it need to be connected directly to the computer?

Works amazingly with the PA12! I show the setup and process in my course

You say the Oaktone Mini’s your recommended desktop choice unless you have large set lists, then go with the LioBox. But this really assumes you are using Ableton Suite, as the plugins used with the Oaktone controllers require Suite. Seems to me that if you are doing small sets with Ableton Standard, the LioBox is the clear cost winner, as upgrading to Suite can more than double the overall cost of buying the Oaktone Mini…
@fromstudiotostage
@fromstudiotostage Год назад
Suite is only required if you’re using TAZ. I don’t use TAZ but use the mini. The mini works with intro/lite, standard, and suite. So…mini is my best all around no matter what edition/version of Live :)

I would never use a grid based controller for tracks or playback. Great for live looping but not helpful for tracks
