There are so many midi keyboards out there, and it's nearly impossible to pick the best one as they all have their strong points. I've used a ton, but I keep going back to one small, portable piece of kit because of it's one neat trick I haven't found on any other unit.

Yes the Korg NanoKey Studio is the best combination of features and capability in the under $400 (us) range. If you are a piano player, it’s probably not your style, but if you are a synth player and like advanced midi control (arp, scales, chords, etc.) it’s FANTASTIC. The X/Y Pad adds a unique control surface. Plus the bluetooth wireless is the clincher. Works flawlessly. Fit’s in a slipcase with my IPAD and I have a portable, wireless production and performance capability.

Can you use the keys as drum pads since it doesn’t have 16 or are you limited to 8 pads only?
@RickCohenMusic

You can map anything to anything on this. You can even play drums on the xy pad, though it wouldn’t be very accurate.

@@ozzymarley1010It’s amazing for what it is, and for the price, but it’s better if you don’t already have experience with full keyboards or advanced synths, as its like learning a new way of doing things. It’s very advanced when you dig in deep, but superficially it seems underwhelming. It’s definitely worth it if you’re used to using your computer keyboard to input midi, but its not the feel of a conventional piano keyboard.

How well does it work with other DAWs? I have Studio One, FL Studio, Reason, and Bitwig and have wondered if this system would work, in full, in any one of them or all of them. That's my biggest grief about midi controllers so far: whether they work with the DAWs or if they're complicated. And I'm not that interested in controlling the mixer, play/stop buttons, but just assigning the knobs, the XY, the pads to a synth & having it use those same features you have specified: chords with the pads, scales, and arp.
@RickCohenMusic
@RickCohenMusic 5 лет назад
All of them. It’s basic midi, and the arp and chord functions are internal. But if you’re having problems with others you may want to check your mappings.
@shitmandood
@shitmandood 5 лет назад
@@RickCohenMusic Excellent info Rick. Thanks for confirming. I didn't see much out there as far as setting it up with a DAW goes, just some general complaints. Sometimes when there isn't much detail about setup, it means it just works so there's nothing to follow but to plug it in & work with the software it has & the DAW MIDI-setup instructions.
@pietuamusse371
@pietuamusse371 5 лет назад
@@shitmandood On windows you will have to install the midi drivers (USB & BLUETOOTH) from the KORG website. It wouldn't show up for me just using the default windows 10 drivers.
@shitmandood
@shitmandood 5 лет назад
@@pietuamusse371 Thanks Piet, do you happen to know if it works with Native Instruments products? I recently picked up a BeatStep Pro but then found that Native Instruments products are being a pain. I've got Massive X, but found it's not supporting MIDI control yet, but I couldn't get BSP to work with basic Massive or Reaktor within Studio One. I could get some control from Reaktor when run stand-alone. So I'm wondering if I need to get an M32 to fill the role of Native Instruments control from Maschine, but was curious if anyone had tried the Korg with NI.

Very cool. I was wondering if the scale features worked universally or just with the Gadget software, seems like you're saying it's all universal, so that's exactly what I wanted to know. I wish they'd come out with something like this with a grid layout (maybe like the Novation Circuit) instead of the usual 2-octave layout, but with the easy scale and chord modes, looks great for quickly putting something down.
@skullhqx
@skullhqx 3 года назад
Might be too late, but yeah, Easy Scale mode works universally. And what he didn’t demonstrate is the ‘black keys’ (grey here) play chords in this mode.

little porblem. when i clicked om the "buy it here" link, it wasent what you had in the video. later i noticed that it had the same link as the "big midi keyboard" in the "my gear" section. think its a problem while you coppy/paste the amezon links.

Guys, how the hell do you figure out which backlit key corresponds to which scale type? :D Rick, you mentioned that "you can see...", I cannot :D I understand that each backlit key when tapping Scale +/- pads corresponds to different scale. Then, tapping the Octave +/- buttons set the key, and the backlit key corresponds to the root note of currently selected key. But I can't figure out the scales :(
@RickCohenMusic
@RickCohenMusic 4 года назад
There’s a map of which physical key corresponds to which scale in the manual, which can be found online too. I wish they had put the scales in order (Ionian, Dorian, etc) but they didn’t. Ionian is first, aeolian is third. Makes no sense. But there you go.

Been using one for about year with a Ipad and overall it is decent. For the price it is really lacking no display, the keys, buttons are cheap. The tap tempo is horrible and extremely frustrating. The keys easily fall off bump or dropped. They do pop right back on. The features do work well and I use them often. It's a shame Korg cut corners with build Quality and still charge a premium price. Add a simple display or use RGB LED's to change colors on different modes/presets and replace the mushy buttons they just suck. Switching between scales and Arp modes/type/rythm kind of sucks to. The different modes/scale should be assigned to the keybed. Example hold Scale button and press middle C is switch Blue Minor Scale and same for Arp values.
@RickCohenMusic
@RickCohenMusic 3 года назад
100%. If Akai or Arturia put these features in their build quality I’d never look back.
@TheDigitalMD
@TheDigitalMD 3 года назад
@@RickCohenMusic But they don't and a Basic Arturia with only half the features (no bluetooth, no scales, no chords) cost $120 vs $150 for the full featured NanoKey Studio. "Premium price" ?? LOL. Premium price controllers are in the $1200 range. not $150 !
@RickCohenMusic
@RickCohenMusic 3 года назад
Premium price for the category. Ie if most beginner/cheap build quality controllers are around $100, then I would say $150 is certainly paying a premium price. And it has more premium features. But ultimately it comes down to semantics.

Also, when I made this video the average price was a bit lower. There’s definitely been a creep over the last few years.

Honestly I’m not sure. There’s a “program” function I didn’t get into because I don’t use it, but you can set the midi info for each of the 8 programs. So I would assume it would do what you’re looking to do, but I can’t confirm.
