"Over the past forty years, Jimmy Cornell has logged hundreds of thousands of nautical miles; the Garcia shipyard has built the most emblematic boats for offshore cruising; and Berret Racoupeau has designed just as many. The coming-together of these three could only give rise to a sailboat with a distinct character, which was to become the Exploration 45.
The first of a line dedicated to sailing all the seas of the world, whether high-latitude or tropical, it is obviously made of aluminium and is a centreboarder. With twin rudders, the control in rough seas and the smoothness of handling are simply exceptional.
All sailing manoeuvres are grouped together in the cockpit, which is particularly well protected by its innovative cap with a view forward. Moving around on deck remains particularly safe, with handrails always within reach and sturdy granny bars. This allows for easy access to the forward sail locker, separated from the rest of the interior by a watertight bulkhead, the ideal complement to the aft technical room.
Inside, the audacity of the layout quickly becomes convincing, with the intelligence of the solutions provided. The deck saloon offers an unexpected panoramic view of the sea: the privilege of comfortably enjoying the exceptional landscapes that surround you. Safety, always keeping a visual eye on your route, while controlling it from the interior watch-keeping position. Available in two or three cabin versions, the interior benefits from remarkable cabinet-making skills. The warmth of Afrormosia, or the brightness of light oak - all you have to do is choose which."

I have a 1975 Marinette. It's 48 years old and it's all aluminum. I sanded the entire hull down to the aluminum, and I didn't find ANY pitting or corrosion anywhere. Just pay attention to electrolysis and you'll never have to worry about corrosion.

Thanks for the very nice video. I considered the Exploration 45 when we were shopping for a go anywhere sailboat. I ended up rejecting it for two points (no the price was not one of them, our boat Fabule, a Boréal 47.2, is as expensive): 1) engine access which is challenging, the engine being under the floor, 2) the plastic roof (composite) which did not have any form of shielding against lightning. Since I am a PhD in this domain and that Garcia confirmed at the time (2019) that no precaution was taken to ground the roof to the hull, this was a show stopper in my mind. As well I did not find that steering the boat from the inside would be practical as I could not have a good view of the sea an boat immediate environment from there. In our Boréal we have the “Doghouse “ which is done for that and I can see sea and sails from it with the same comfort of remaining inside of the boat, especially for night passages. Good hunting for a boat. Salutations, Yan

It shows what you can do with the interior layout of a 45 foot boat if you are not forced to squeeze in a 3rd double stateroom. Really opens up some possibilities. Boat is definitely set up to be cruised on an extended basis by a couple with perhaps kids or the occasional pair of guests. Really like the wood finishes, especially the cabin sole. And guess what, it's not a center cockpit! Yay! Look how much more comfortable outdoor space you get. Aluminum construction is great, as long as you can afford it. It's about a $200K premium over a fiberglass equivalent of this boat.

Nice boat and reliable boatbuilder, but from my perspective the Boreal 47.2 remains one step ahead on multiple aspects, such as the doghouse (way ahead of the Garcia forward nav station) and the cockpit ergonomy. Several options when you are looking for ocean passage aluminum boats from Garcia, Allure, Boreal, KM, Alubat and semi custom from other renowned boatyards that are making dreams come true.

Thanks for the tour. Some good, some bad. Love the woodwork and cabinetry design. It's really beautiful in form and materials. Like Aluminum boats. Aluminum may be more ecological than plastic composites. The aft helms are very exposed and the view through the dodger is very small. The salon and nav station are nice. Really clever use of a salon seat doubling as a nav station seat. Engine access does seem problematic. Probably the weight distribution would be wrong, but if the engine were in the technical room, it would be much easier to get to. (Presumably this is a shaft drive, and that's why the engine is so far forward. In contrast, a sail drive, which is arguably less durable, probably could put the engine in the technical room.) The larger Garcias have much more practical layouts. Somehow it didn't shrink down as well to this size.

I love aluminum boats when properly built. There are two near deal breakers for me. 1. One of the huge pluses of an aluminum boat is ALL deck fittings can be welded on, not through bolted. This eliminates water intrusion into the boat. Dry bilges are especially very important on an aluminum boat. These at least appear to be through bolted. No good. And 2. Yes, I would have a hard time living with that engine access. For it’s design purpose, could use at least another 50-100 gal more of fuel. Other wise love it. Beautiful. PS. You kept saying the great protection of the large hard dodger. Great for all except the helms person. They are exposed. That boat should have at least 3 autopilots for redundancy. I wouldn’t want to be hand steering when they break down for long. I had 3 on my boat and was down to one a few times.
@donaldvanvliet9039
@donaldvanvliet9039 Год назад
On a sailboat, the helmsman should be exposed or at least able to have an unobstructed view on the sails. If you can’t handle that, get a motorboat.
@JD96893
@JD96893 Год назад
i agree, i dont know why all modern boats seem to have the same double helms and they are always exposed! Just seems stupid to me. These boats seem to be custom built, i'm sure you could have the deck fittings all welded down(maybe single helm too?). Probably bigger tanks too, they are pretty small for an "expedition boat".
@gregorydamario7977
@gregorydamario7977 Год назад
Engine access does look inadequate. So, when the engine wears out and needs replacement, must it be dismantled in order to remove it? Must the new engine be dismantled then reassembled in the teeny tiny hole or do you, just like they did on the "Deadliest Catch", cut a BIG hole in the hull, install the gear then weld the hull back together. I don't think that is optimal for a personal, small, family level yachet. (I spelled it that way on purpose.) Ok, that is a little extreme, maybe, but it does appear that when the engine dies, it will be a very labor intensive, master marine mechanic level job to get the boat repowered.

@@donaldvanvliet9039 Disagree. Tell that to one of the most successful dedicated world cruisers ever the Amel. My last 2 boats, center cockpit, had helm fully protected by dodger and Bimini. As a US Sailing instructor offshore San Francisco. I have spent many days at sea fully exposed to the weather on modern racer/cruisers. Yes you need to be able to trim. But ocean cruising and adventure voyaging, especially in high latitudes, you are NOT racing, and you definitely want protection from the elements. To not want that is just macho BS! If you are in a SERIOUS race boat, fine. Get wet, and cold, and Burt, and skin cancer. Anything to win. And that’s ok it thats what you want. Watch a few episodes of sailing Delos. Amel super Maramu 52. 55 KTS wind south east of the Cape of Good Hope. Observe how they handle it. Fully protected. Insane survival conditions. I have sailed my boats accross the Caribbean Sea both length wise and north to south. Crossed the Pacific and sailed hi latitudes in the pacific. Have fun exposed to the elements. Not for me.

@SailingSnowGum
@SailingSnowGum Год назад
Hi Munnon. In a word, the sailing performance is good. But it's not a racing boat. To that, some would say, 'Good! I want it to be comfortable!'. You could ask Garcia for the polar charts and study the details, points of sail with various sail combinations, VMG, etc. What I will tell you is that the data on those charts checks out in reality. Keep in mind that it's a heavy boat when full up - not a lightweight cruiser-racer. So it needs a bit of wind. It will move forward, tight into a 6 knot true wind using the Code 0. For downwind you'll want a Parasailor or Gennaker in those light winds. At the opposite end of the wind situation, this boat is great in strong winds and big seas that cause other boats of its size to become downright uncomfortable. For us it sailed comfortably and confidently in a Force 9 Full Gale, with nasty and confused seas. It does what's written on the box. :-)

Absolutely lovely boat for it's supposed purpose: All seas expedition boat! If you like this kind of boat, also do consider Allures and Alubat. Allures is actually build by Garcia, also have high grade aluminium hull, but typical a grp deck and couch house. Build more to cruising standards, but also slightly better priced, for instance do their new 51.9 model (a class bigger than this one) cost about the same brand new. Alubat is also build in high grade marine aluminium and are essentially Garcia boats at a bargain, for instance do the 38 feet brand new have a base price of 280k Euro, with lifting keels and ability to dry fall and all. Alubat is less focused on beauty of exterior, but is every bit as functional and solid, and the interior is very beautiful and practical though. I honestly believe, that the Alubat 38, though that much smaller, would be a better couples circumnavigation boat really.

Regarding the options pricing: once you dig into how sensible the options are (usually aimed at using the yacht for a specific purpose, like a generator to power a dive compressor) and how sensibly they are integrated into the boat’s systems as a whole, the options turn out to be fairly priced. We are halfway through the build process and impressed but not surprised by how it is coming together.

Nice to see another video about the Garcia. I have the specs on this boat memorized. I have read everything I can find on this boat. This is the perfect boat IF you are a true bluewater sailor. I'm typing this comment before watching the video, so I hope the uploader mentions that this vessel has a swing keel, so you can sail ANYWHERE in the bahama's and never ground out. Those mooring spots that are too close to land that no one else can use are all YOURS if you are helming a Garcia. This sailboat is not designed to have a cupholder every five feet from you, it's designed to get you there, and then get you back safely. Never will you worry about semi-submerged shipping containers ever again if this is your vessel of choice. I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, so my first voyage with this piece of perfection would be to navigate the North West Passage. This boat would feel at home on The Baffin Bay.

I had a more conventional dodger on my boat which was much taller and I could see over and around it quite well and had great protection while steering.

Hi Mase. Yes, you can steer the boat with autopilot controls from inside at the nav station. Or you can do the same while standing in the galley making breakfast with the microwave, or from under the dodger, or from your synced iPad, or by using the autopilot remote control fob from anywhere other than having fallen overboard. Note to sailing couples: if you can't find the autopilot remote control fob, has your partner fallen overboard with it around their neck? The keel line stem to stern academic keeling design reduces heeling over and increases speed of sailing. The deepest point should be between the mast and forestay. You could put the trapezoid keel plate from the mast to the bow. The mast at one and the bow at three or four. Then clear the boom and ballast the boat. The center board stays up. The mast and headsails are keeled .

Stunning world cruiser...however, two things struck my about the design. As you mentioned, the engine access is not ideal, and there was no mention of a bow truster. She is built for extreme open water, but what about tight docking/marina conditions, especially in strong crosswinds?

If you purchase this boat for what it can do, then you would have years of experience sailing to the point that a bow thruster is just like "power steering" on a car, it's nice, but you don't really need it. . . same goes with this boat...one less bow thruster, one less thru-hull.
@SailingSnowGum
@SailingSnowGum Год назад
A bowthruster is an option. It works well with the centreboard down, as this gives the hull something to pivot on. It's a whole other story with the centreboard up - nowhere near as responsive. In fact, the feeling that the bowthruster is making noise but not doing much is enough to make one ask a nearby wife, 'Darling, I don't think we've got the centreboard down? Hmmm.'

Generally, I very much enjoy your boat tours. I really enjoy the variety of boats that you draw our attention too. One thing that I find annoying however, is the ever constant Storage, storage, storage. Enough already, please continue to highlight the living quarters, galley, engine room and how the vessel navigates. Tanks.

@SailingSnowGum Год назад
Hi Nat. You better not watch our videos about storage on these boats. It's really good! But it'll piss you off, so don't watch. ;-) p.s. Storage is really important on boats intended for voyages. This boat gives up some spaciousness in the saloon, for (you guessed it) storage! Should I keep talking about storage?

Great reviews, but, similar to real estate videos you don’t discuss price. Most of us pay close attention to price and our budgets so it is vexing that value discussions are absent from your reviews. Yep, I know, you lost the MSRP in the link below. Well, why not talk about it? Is it some sort of verboten concept in the yacht world?

Hi Van. When I was boat shopping I found the lack of info on RU-vid about prices to be frustrating as well. But then I found the perfect solution! Call or email the sales guys at the boatyards, tell them you're a serious boat shopper and ask for the full price list. They never failed to give me all I could have wanted to know, usually within minutes. And as a bonus, the prices were up to date! Enjoy the shopping. 🙂

Allthough it is my dreamboat, there are some compromises indeed: The cabin layout is not so mine. If you would merge a Garcia 45 and a Sirius 40DS with it's very intelligent layouts and solutions, you will surely have your nearly absolute dreamboat. To answer your question: Jimmy Cornell does not own one now. BTW: Sirius has a waiting list of 4(!) years for now and growing.
@TYRONE_SHOELACES-CANADA
@TYRONE_SHOELACES-CANADA Год назад
The Sirius is like the "Sister" ship to this one ...if I could not wait for my Garcia to be built on time and Sirius had a 40DS all ready to go, I would not hesitate to change brands ... they are so alike but as you said, with subtle differences.

I like it, but it is over 2 Mio Euro in full spec - and it isn't a real expedition boat. It is a "go anywhere family boat" in my opinion. But what is not to like on that?

HOW MUCH does it cost ⁉
@SailingSnowGum
@SailingSnowGum Год назад
The answer to your question, ‘How much does it cost?’ is like the Room of Requirement at Hogwarts. It only appears if you need to know. And if you don’t need to know, it doesn’t appear. These kinds of boats all cost about what you’d expect, depending on what is included. So what it costs is up to you. If you’re not going to buy one it doesn’t matter. If you are going to buy one you need only ask. 🙂 I’m channeling the Grey Lady here, which is more polite than saying, ‘If you need to ask, you can’t afford it.’ That’s not a nice thing to say to anyone, but it’s true. You want plenty of spare money after you’ve bought a boat like this. Isn’t it interesting how we’re curious about the actual cost of things we want and might be able to afford, but hesitate to ask the right people for fear of finding out that we can’t? 🙂 Prices have jumped due to post-Covid inflation and aluminium cost increases caused by Russia’s war on Ukraine. You need to ask Garcia for their current price list, then factor in how prices might increase between now and delivery in a few years. Eek!

The visibility from the helm is atrocious

The helm stations are a confusing design choice. Seems like a waste of a well-protected cockpit to leave to helm stations exposed.
@SailingSnowGum
@SailingSnowGum Год назад
Hi Robert. The helm stations are where they are for a few reasons. Firstly, they use a cable operated system to the steering compartment below, so the helms are best positioned directly above the steering gear and the rudders. Secondly, with the helms being where they are, they helmsman or woman has good visibility forward. In marinas and harbours I would often stand on the seats behind the helms, for better visibility. I'd have to hop down to reach the throttle or bowthruster controls. Then back up. Good exercise! Thirdly, having two helms on the sides makes for good access to get behind them, or through to the transom. It's a good cockpit layout. Great handholds!
@robertkelleher1850

@@SailingSnowGum That makes sense. On second watching I noticed that we really don't get a good wide angle perspective from the video of what it feels like. I imagine it feels much better protected in person. The also look really really close together. I suspect that's also a camera angle issue.

For “off the shelf” go anywhere I believe Boreal is #1 with Garcia a good way behind… for serious exploration, expeditions or commercial high latitude sailing, for me it would only be K&M

Hi Mike. K&M? H&M? One of these sells clothes at pretty good prices, though I'm not sure the skirt my daughter bought would suit you. KM Yachtbuilders could probably sell us some clothes too - or a very nice boat! Carolyn and I met up with a Bestevaer in a Scottish anchorage. Oof, the Dutch are good at building boats.
