Speaking of, they're doing a Remake of the original Wizardry. It's in early access now, and it's really good. Same game, but with fresh graphics and animations, and an ever so slight amount of QoL.
I played the game for a while after watching Tom and determined the point of the years and days. Monsters only respawn when the year changes. So the time it takes for you to get recovered is a mechanic to pass time to respawn monsters so you can farm again.
I'm fairly sure this is either stock-art with a filter or AI generated. For example, the archer and the knight/crusader are completely different styles (I'm actually pretty sure the knight is just a photo with a filter on it).
@@kamikazesopp the artist is とり夫 (if you search for them, their pixiv account should be the first to show up). there are a lot of post-processing effects applied but it's not AI or stock images.
@@kamikazesopp I've seen some of the art before in a different game, Buriedbornes. It's pretty generic so I suspect it's stock-art like you said. Edit: I looked into it, the art is free-use.
If this game actually had, you know, art for walls, floors and ceilings, it'd be an instant buy for me. But staring at just a black screen with wireframe environments for hours? I never want to go back to those days... We played those games for the gameplay, not because they looked like they did. Insane decision to just opt to not include environment art in this..
There's an old game called Demise: Rise of the Ku'tan which is a much more involved version of this, with 3D textured environments, multiplayer, quests, loot, etc.
the gameplay/idea reminds me of Legends of Grimrock, which Simon and Lewis played a long time ago, which was very similar but still modern gameplay and much better art direction - i agree with you, this seems to barebones
There's this game I used to play on android called Buriedbornes (it's on steam now too apparently), and that game uses the same art. Edit: the art is free-use.
MAN, I get such a hit of nostalgia from this! I used to play a game called Mordor when I was a kid that looks very similar to this! Later on, the same devs made a game called, Demise: Rise of the Ku'Tan that I played the ever-loving sh** out of. Thank you for showing the old school dungeon crawler genre some love!!! One of my all-time favorite genre of games.
I still have Decklin's Demise: Ascension installed and sometimes I'll go back to it and play for a bit... It's one of the games that defined my childhood.
I _love_ the look of this, and it's cool that this came from Dungeon Crawler Jam 2024 (which I had no idea was a thing). Fingers crossed that they manage to make a sequel like their post-release plans mention, as I would love features like if the minimap either had little markers for enemy positions on explored regions (like the original Rogue), or visible enemy sprites in the 3D corridors like the later era dungeon crawlers that would be big draws from a follow-up. A truly perfect birthday present ta myself for today.
If you like this style of game, I highly recommend checking out dungeon encounters. It's super fun to play through and map out, with fun builds and hidden characters. Also recommend a blind playthrough, not looking where things are online.
It would be awesome if this ended up as the gateway drug into oldschool games like ADOM. There a tons of games that would be right up his alley if he can stomach the early ASCII graphics (or lack thereof)
@@foreng3095 ToME, Moria, DoomRL, Angband, and, of course, the granddaddy NetHack are classics. There are also plenty of great newer titles in a similar style like Cogmind, CataclysmDDA, DungeonCrawlSS, Dungeons of Dredmor, Rift Wizard, Zorbus, and Soulash 2. He could also make the dive into Dwarf Fortress.
@@TheRalviisch of the more obscure new ones I'd mention Path of Achra. Game length actually could fit Tom's video format too now that I think about it.
Hey Tom, you should check out a game called Felvidik. Very cool artstyle sometimes PS1, sometimes JRPG. Its set in 16th century Hungary so theyve got guns but theyre not good. Its got some supernatural elements similar to the works of a writer with a notoriously african american cat. Havent heard anyone talk about it since it came out but its very cool.
I've seen so much of this art in Buriedbornes, it's ridiculous. I've been playing that game _for years._ Perennially slept on by basically everyone. Seeing Tori Otto's art that's been used for so long in that game, in _this_ game is just throwing me off. 😆
I do get why he called the Sage a "White Mage" based on their outfit but I'd assume the priest is the "White Mage" archetype. Also Tom choosing to die instead of flee after seeing it was 250+ days early on is wild.
Wow, this feels just like a dungeon crawler game Ive played decades ago on my uncles palmtop, not entirely sure that's a good thing, but hey, good nostalgia bait!
Poor dragon. They were just chilling in their home, with their multi-species friends all getting along. And then comes a bunch of human 'heros' committing mass murder.
oh this level classic, i meaan budget spent on character models, walls budget, one quarter ... I do enjoy a crawler and just instant turn based fighting,
This is obscure but there was a spiderman plug and play game called escape from the sewers and the movement of this game is the same and it just brought me back.
I feel like some colour variation would have helped. Even just on the map to feel like there are "zones" and not just endlessly snaking tunnels. Also the dragon's room has no more fanfare than fighting orc #97. No extra visuals or sounds, just underwhelming. And "hey the dragon's back" wouldn't inspire me to continue give the above.
It doesn't feel very authentic to the old dungeon crawlers. The old RPGs always had oodles of depth and decision making. In this game you just decide what party you bring and that's it. The level up and blacksmith don't give you any choices, they could just as well be automatic when you get back to town. I guess this is fine as a casual game but just play something from 40 years ago if you want depth of gameplay.
Daily reminder that Tom is an amazing person and to thank him for all he has done/will do - Day 1634 Oh just fantastic :D, not to mention nailed the style, I can imagine playing this on a calculator or something, got I wish I could do that, just load the came into a little box for on the go play XD I can definitely see why it's so addicting, the gameplay loop is on-point and it do suck you in. I agree with Tom, damn those pictures/icons are good XD I tell you, when Tom started first listing the names they where so fitting I thought that was their names, was thinking "wait, where did it say his name, I can't find it" XD, they were all so perfect. Also, awwww Bess, cute name for a cute boy :D D that poor Wizard, got a drive by vaporizing XD
