It's a shame because part of the joke of the staged TG scenes is that they were obviously fake and low-budget (like May driving off the cliff), and that the audience was never supposed to believe it was anything more than a joke. The Grand Tour never really understood that

That’s one thing I found hard to explain to people when saying I wasn’t as big a fan of The Grand Tour when it first came out. In my opinion, the TG episodes from around 2006-2011 were the peak of the boys’ adventures, because the jokes wrote themselves from the natural banter and mishaps resulting from the situations they were in, and not just writing in gags. I always go back to the old adventures and specials where the premise was “we have £1,000 and 1,000 miles to do this, let’s see what happens”. The Vietnam Special is probably the best example. There’s obviously some staged parts of it, but it’s REALLY difficult to fake a motorcycle trip like that across Vietnam to the extent that The Grand Tour might have, and make it feel a real as 2008 Top Gear did. It’s also pretty obvious they don’t really want to do the car specials much anymore. I think even they realize they’ve exhausted most feasible ideas for episodes.
