Out of all the Pokémon challenge runs out there, the Monotype Run often gets left behind for the more dramatic and exciting variants. Today I want to give monotype runs some needed love by figuring out the best monotype run in each main series game. Be sure to drop a like and subscribe, especially if you actually read the description! You're truly dedicated. I like that.

I did a poison type run in Pokémon Red recently. And I wanted to share some advice. 1. Get a Haunter/Gengar and teach it Thunderbolt. It will help with Lorelei's water types. 2. Put Nidoking and Nidoqueen on your team. They are strong and can learn strenght and surf. 3. Get a Tentacruel and teach it Blizzard/Ice Beam, to deal with any dragon types. 4. Teach Venusaur both Leech seed and Toxic (trust me). Poison is my favorite type and I'm currently doing a mono poison run in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond. It's going really well so far.

This is a niche request, but I always loved playing the games by challenging the gym leaders with their own type - but this is only possible for certain games, and in others its extremely limiting. If you ever wanna make a video for me specifically as a funny treat, an assessment of each core game for their compatibility with this type of challenge would be super interesting. But then again, I've loved all your content so whatever you do next will be great anyway!

I really enjoyed your video! One minor nitpick, though, is that some of the Gen 4 Pokemon that you mentioned (specifically Gallade, Gliscor and Mamoswine) couldn't be obtained until the postgame in Diamond and Pearl (through pokeradar, dual slot mode and swarm, respectively), taking away some of your options. However, it likely shouldn't have too big an effect on the final conclusions you came to for the games.

Thanks for this, as someone who has done quite a few monotype runs on twitch, bringing any attention to it is great. And I will admit I have not entirely stuck to the rule of having one type before the gym as in some cases i have had to bring in a mon of the type to use off the start/until i get a second member. monotype is currently probably the most popular type of nuzlocke that people are doing on youtube. how many pokemon and where do you get them, especially if you need to get one critter through a couple of gyms. how to beat trainers that you're weak to. in some games you need to distribute tms or figure out which of them have their own stab moves. but you don't have to do it as a nuzlocke. I think monotypes can be fun to see what kind of pokemon are available and especially if they give you critters you'd never consider. it's a team building exercise. I tried a mono bug team in oras and there were lots of critters and lots of good moves to use.

My favourite types are Dark, Water, and Normal, nothing else comes close to those three, and that's pretty much been consistent since I started the series with Gen 3. I would *probably* agree with you that Fighting is superior to Ground in Diamond and Pearl, but having a Hippowdon with Ice Fang to deal with Cynthia's Garchomp is making Ground look really nice rn. But she does also have Gastrodon, Milotic, and Roserade. so yeah maybe fighting lmao.

@SparksMcPasta
@SparksMcPasta Год назад
Id argue that the Normal type would be the best for gen one. Like you would struggle at first, but after the first few gyms you could steam roll the rest of the game, especially if you could get you hands on Snorlax, Tauros, Chansey, or Persian (in blue version). The sheer power of some of these normal types completely out weighs the fact most of them don't have a secondary type.
@Citizen5101
@Citizen5101 Год назад
Normal doesn't even struggle early. Rattata learns Hyper Fang super early and can take down Brock only a little slower than Charmander or Butterfree. After that your options start opening up and you can get a lot of experience before needing to battle Misty, after that the game really opens up. The problem with Normal is how many great options you have to choose from.
@Citizen5101
@Citizen5101 Год назад
Also not having a second type is more of an advantage than a disadvantage, there are very few Fighting type attacks in the game and most can be dealt with using a Normal/Flying Pokemon. Also tons of Normal types have a wide movepool that you won't be missing out on type coverage.
@StreamZero-wf4yv

I really enjoyed this video so please don't think my nitpicking is saying the opposite, it was great! Two small issues I noticed in this video though. In Diamond and Pearl you can't get Ralts before beating the game since it requires the PokeRadar which you get after the Nat Dex. I still think Fighting is the strongest there regardless though so it's no big deal. Also, In Black and White there's a small patch of sand where you can catch Sandlie before fighting Burgh. That'd make a pretty big difference in my opinion since Sandile is neutral to the bug moves he's using instead of weak to them. Also it learns Rock Tomb(found in the Desert Resort) so getting a few extra levels on it before Eliza would be a biiig bonus. Still probably not the best type, but I think you seriously short changed them with that bit of knowledge missing.

I'm honestly a bit baffled that Flying wasn't mentioned in this video, since it's arguably the most versatile type ever made. Besides Gen V, there's no single Gen where the Flying type would not be recommended, mostly because of the existence of Gyarados and Pelipper as amazing, early games Water/Flying options that carry you through most of the Rock or Steel roadblocks. Even when those are not available before the first gym, access to extremely early evolution bugs like Beautifly and Butterfree helps (for the most part) against Brock, Roxanne and Roark. Electric types are by far the biggest hurdle, but access to some Ground or Dragon/Flying types and/or access to Earthquake TM can mitigate that. Otherwise, just brute force through them with Gyarados. Seriously, that Pokémon is a demon! How hard can it be to do it? 😆 So yeah, that concludes my TED Talk in favor of the usage of Flying Type ❤️ 🕊️

The only challenge I've ever done myself is a bug-only run in Sword. And that was a ton of fun. I may do something similar again at some point

A couple years ago I played my first mono type run, a Ground run with Platinum. I decided that type because I noticed that I basically never used it in any game, save for the occasional starter mon And omg I used the exact same team you described for Diamond and Pearl 😂 I mean, they’re the best so it makes sense, but I still found it funny to see the same ones mentioned
@Wayte13
@Wayte13 27 дней назад
Not only do you get Mudkip(swampert) as a starter, the very next water type you can catch is Pelliper. You START your team with it's coverage in place.

I found that for Pokémon Shield, the bug type was the easiest monotype run to do. You get one with good coverage before each of the first three gyms

I've done a poison type mono of diamond, it was incredibly good and I'm sad it wasn't mentioned here; Roserade, Crobat, Haunter/Gengar, Tentacruel, Drapion, Skuntank, Toxicroak, and Dustox too I guess. Very powerful mons with incredibly good stab coverage, as well as two only weak to ground moves.

I have yet to do a monotype run in most games but for gen 1 specifically I had a blast with Normal. Sure, Brock is kinda bad but otherwise the fact special is a single stat in gen 1, on top of the insane type coverage certain normal type mons have, made the team unstoppable. Catching chansey, tauros and kangaskhan was awful though.

My favorite type overall is Ghost, which was weirdly hard in White. My favorite mono type I’ve done was bug in Y, as I was destroying my friend’s water type run he was doing at the same time.

I LOVE the fire type generally, it's one of my favorites, and I LOVE playing mono fire, even before I knew about "challenge runs". Arcanine, Ninetales, Flareon, Rapidash, Typhlosion, quilava!!! I actually love the design of quilava even more than typhlosion. Charizard of course. Houndoom, Entei, Ho-oh, Emboar, Talonflame, Inceroar, Centiskorch, omg Alolan Marowak, Skeledirge, Victini, Chandelure, Volcarona, Salazzle. Chi-Yu. I have no idea how I would choose which 6, If I could access all of them. D/P/P were like "You love fire pokemon? HAHAHHAHAHAHA TOO BAD SUCKS TO BE YOU"

You forgot the if you choose to do mono water in sapphire you can use the box legendary. That sets preeminent rain. Yeah. I also think water is a strong honorable mention for gen 4.

@@chonchjohnch I really don't think that is a problem. The difficulty spike from dealing with stuff that hits you from super effective stab is way more impactful than the difficulty drop from having type advantage.

Fighting is probably easier for gen 4 but I did a ground monorun is platinum which was super fun and challenging in the best way. Especially getting gibble early game. The ice gym and Cynthia are fun to work through and you get to use really fun mons

RBY Normal type is also excellent. You have to do some smart plays for Brock, but have 5 team members before Misty, two of which can be fully evolved. Depending on ruleset, the Safari Zone has some excellent upgrades for you, and at minimum you get the powerhouse of Snorlax. Plus STAB Hyper Beam in Gen 1 makes quick work of most teams, and the great coverage of many Normal types means that Rock or Fighting aren’t really threats to you.

Also, the best game to do any monotype run, in my opinion, (or, at least, up to the 3ds, since I don't have a switch) is pokemon X, since you can get a pokemon of every type before the second gym

If I had to guess, Fighting is the best in SV. Flamigo is or at least was used in speed runs. You get it in the first area pretty much. You get options such as Pawmot for electric immunity, Medicham/Gallade for psychics, Lucario should be enough for fairies. Oh and Quaquaval with Aqua Step, if you can get your hands on ability patch for Moxie. There’s also Annihilape with strong setup and near unresisted stabs, Breloom, Great Tusk in scarlet, Hariyama/Heracross for status absorption. Even the worst fightings being Falinks, Toxicroak, Crabominable and Tauros (depending on if you feel like getting the other forms), there’s not really a single bad fighting option. The biggest hurdle will be Revavroom fairy and poison I would think, but you could probably have something bulk up and kill it.

it should be mentioned that grass does somewhat better in sapphire over ruby, but not by much to knock water from the number 1 spot, in ruby, water is a no brainer, in sapphire, an argument could be made for grass.

in gens where eggs are available I like to breed up a batch of mono type to trade over as soon as trading is available. First time was B/W2 with a starting trio of jellicent's line, golurk's line, and chandelure's line.

Man, the ghost-types were done dirty in gen1 and the remake games (at least the gen3 remakes). I mean, Ghastly, Haunter, and Gengar have effectively the same learnsets (a few moves changed here and there, but mostly the same), they're supposed to be the main foil to the psychic type, but aren't due to a programming error or something, and what's more, they're not even pure ghost-types, instead being a mix of ghost and poison!
