@Elisabeth Marie She let the affair between Olivia and Fitz go on because it gave her a chance to breathe. People conveniently like to forget that Millie and Fitz never loved each other, their marriage was purely for political benefit and they looked 'good' together. There was no betrayal to speak of. Jerry picked her out for Fitz. And it was convenient for fits to fall in love with someone like Olivia Pope. But outside of that I don't think her actions were particularly malicious, I think she was telling the truth when she told Olivia that the reason she let it go on was because it gave her a break. While she did seem jealous or resentful of their relationship at times I think it was more out of loneliness and the need for companionship rather than she actually wanted him back. Mellie pretty much had no one outside of Fitz.

That's not love at all. Mellie stopped being in love with Fitz when Big Jerry raped her. The only reason she let the affair continue was to occupy her husband and so he could continue to be president. It was about him being happy, but not because she loved him

But Nellie is partial the blame , she wasn't fair about Big Jerry not telling Fitz what happened. How can you compare Mellie to Jackie Kennedy? Jackie actually loved John Kennedy and he loved her but he couldn't be faithful to his wife and his father taught him to be faithful. Mellie and Fitz marriage was an arranged marriage by their fathers. He didn't pursue Mellie. She was picked for him. Olivia is the only woman he ever loved thats why he was so obsessed with her. This wasn't some simple affair. People wanna compare this to Clinton and Jefferson and Kennedy but they aren't like any of them because Fitz and Olivia fell in love with each other.

You see she calls him being in love with another woman a disgusting fairytale? She even here can't comprehend that her husband could fall in love with his mistress. When you're in a marriage that is loveless its easy for a person to fall in love with somebody else. Mellie don't love Fitz and don't want him but she don't want another woman to love him either. She wants Fitz to be just as miserable as he is. How dare he get happiness when she chose power over it? They are in this together. She was raped by his father and never was going to tell him because she didn't want anything to come between them getting and staying in the white house. In her mind she felt like well I allow him to be with another woman so that should be enough but when her livelihood is threatened and he could get kicked out the white house that's when she wanna go into wife mode and act like the scorned wife whose husbnad can't be faithful.

She loved Fritz but she cut off from the marriage due to her rape and let's face it, Frtiz is a narcissistic, selfish man. She has issues sure but Fritz has been very cruel to her, but it's seems to be ok because he took up with a black woman. If the roles were reversed, and Olivia Pope was his wife and Mellie was his mistress, she would still be the bad guy because she is white. Olivia Pope character, not her race, is a murderous, self serving, adulterous c- word, with very little compassion for other. Her and Fritz deserve each other's. Mellie is petty, and conniving but hurtful life's experiences made her that way. And as a bi-racial woman, Olivia is a poor model as the strong black woman when she lets a cocky, arrogant white man use and cheat on her. That being said, I love the actresses and the actor.

You’re right. Olivia made a conscious decision to sleep with a married man. Mellie was the innocent one to me. Loved Mellie’s courage and strength in the face of her struggles. Once she realized she could manipulate Fitz for her own gain, she did unfortunately.
