I believe they’re being transferred to the London- Portsmouth route with 4 car units for 100mph speeds, and refurbishment for longer distances.

It is all economics. It is cheaper for them to lease all 701's and the 701's will have toilets. Not to mention the savings in maintenance having just 1 class of train instead of 4. South West Trains tried to do things on the cheap. They should have ordered more class 707's instead of taking the displaced 456's and attaching them to Class 455's ! Whilst the 707's and the Class 458 have a case, the 455's are approaching 40 years old, the 456's 30 years old. At the very least the 455's need replacing. Is it really worth refurbishing old trains that are approaching 40 years, for an intensive commuter network like the South West Railway? Take it from me, I live in Victoria Australia and we still have 40 year old locos, pulling 40, 50 and 60 year old carriages in commuter services, not good.

@@mjcats2011 I’ll miss the 455s, loved taking them back in the day with my grandmother, but they are aging. I think the 701s seem good, but the new seats aren’t great.

I prefer them now. Wifi, charging and free entertainment. I also like the new 701s but I think the 458s going on the Portsmouth line is odd.

@@DanielJones-ej3io 701s are just basically shitty-looking trams, these 458s are way better than the 701 but I agree that it is a bit odd with a 4-car 458 going on the Portsmouth line.

@@OfficiallyHendo I have to disagree, these things are deafening on the rails and it's aggravating. The 701s feel much, much better.
