Msfisherqueen1 agreed. No one will ever come close to being the count. Bela Lugosi WAS Count Dracula. I teach a film studies course in high school. I agree with you. I teach him as an exemplar of exemplar acting
@@sociopathsurvivor7129 yes he played a Count I think people overlook he was not just playing a vampire not all vampires would have that regal way and mannerisms it was because of who he was in life that his undead character was the way he was. Like imagine if the Count of Monte Crisco was undead.
Karen Hummel - a pathetic cry from a Being hundreds of years old....knowledge and power garnered through centuries snuffed-out by a weak human with a mallet and a piece of wood. Dracula never stays dead however....chaos always has a way of reasserting itself into the temporal order of humankind.
when filmmakers produced greatness without cgi, dolby surround sound & needless explosions. no blood and gore no profanity no nude sex scenes just great acting, editing, set designes, and plot. most importantly no 2 1/2 to 3 hrs runtimes. Dracula was about 1hr 15minutes.Both Bela lugosi and Dwight Frye have been immortalized by their eerie mesmerizing performances. Modern day directors should take note.Simple & straightforward works best!
Sadly...Hollywood is not going to take note of this. Hollywood is too focus on purposely making shitty movies of remakes, shitty movies in general and now terrible go woke/sjw movies. Its no wonder why hollywood is now losing money and profits now at the box office.
The « they’re all crazy » comic relief scene comes JUST BEFORE the battle of wills between Dracula and van Helsing. Perfect timing - just as we are laughing at the comic dialogue, the smile is frozen on our faces by the very serious confrontation.
Dracula, greatest character of all time. My whole life feels like I've been living in a c-rated, cheap Dracula movie. When I was a very little kid I'd dress up like Dracula all the time and bite my brother and sisters on the neck. I'd hang upside down in my closet and sleep in my dresser drawers like a coffin.
what I also loved about the movie is the quietness of it, no background music , and for some reason the restored versions have not one but two different tracks of endless music .. early talkies had enough to deal with without adding this , besides the public would be looking around for the orchestra .. it was a very different world ..
Apparently the film makers wanted to make this movie into a full version of the Bram Stoker novel. The great depression prevented this having only a minimal budget.
RENFIELD: "I'm going to Castle Dracula. I'm the head of the Quick-E-Mart." INNKEEPER: "You're the head of the Quick-E-Mart?" RENFIELD: "Why, yes." INNKEEPER: "Really?" RENFIELD: "Y-yes?" INNKEEPER: "You??" RENFIELD: "Yes, yes. I am!" INNKEEPER: "NO!"
The old woman crosses herself in the Roman Catholic way, not the Eastern Orthodox way most likely in Romania. Very few Eastern Orthodox in America and even fewer in Hollywood, so an understandable error. You could say Transylvania is heavily ethnic Hungarian and so she could be Roman Catholic, but about half of the Hungarians were Protestant (Reformed).
This is still the best horror movie I ever saw in my life the only horror movies that follow are Nosfertu , King Kong , Beast from 20,000 Fathoms & Godzilla.
One of my favorite scene from the movie is between Renfield and the man from the village Where he Says says You’re going to castle in disbelief and HorrorAnd of course Renfield doesn’t listen because he is a modern enlighten Westerer So much smarter then These superstitious medieval Eastern Folks
ASimoneau Awesome effects throughout the movie, especially for 1931. Check out the effects in "The Invisible Man " with the Great Claude Rains. The people behind those effects WERE TALENTED/GIFTED, PERIOD. There was NO CGI in the 30s and yet the special effects of 30s movies are mind blowing.
dracula is not in bran castel....................its in transvania in Borgo Pas area ..they talk in movie by details where, in the montains where was austrohyngary border limit, exact on montains in Bucovina hides
To believe in a loving God requires you to be a loving people. People today think love is weak and only violence and viciousness are signs of strength.
Well Bela gave a great performance as Jesus when he was in the theatre group in Hungary too he was just an actor and got typecast in America because of his accent. People thought he really was evil and Dracula he was so convincing in the role.
They shot a Spanish language version of this movie at the same time as the English version. They even used the same sets. Only the actors and actresses were different.
