Wilhelm Richard Wagner (22 May 1813 - 13 February 1883) was a German composer, theatre director, polemicist, and conductor who is chiefly known for his operas (or, as some of his later works were later known, "music dramas"). Unlike most opera composers, Wagner wrote both the libretto and the music for each of his stage works. Initially establishing his reputation as a composer of works in the romantic vein of Carl Maria von Weber and Giacomo Meyerbeer, Wagner revolutionised opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk ("total work of art"), by which he sought to synthesise the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, with music subsidiary to drama. He described this vision in a series of essays published between 1849 and 1852. Wagner realised these ideas most fully in the first half of the four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung).
His compositions, particularly those of his later period, are notable for their complex textures, rich harmonies and orchestration, and the elaborate use of leitmotifs-musical phrases associated with individual characters, places, ideas, or plot elements. His advances in musical language, such as extreme chromaticism and quickly shifting tonal centres, greatly influenced the development of classical music. His Tristan und Isolde is sometimes described as marking the start of modern music.
Wagner had his own opera house built, the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, which embodied many novel design features. The Ring and Parsifal were premiered here and his most important stage works continue to be performed at the annual Bayreuth Festival, run by his descendants. His thoughts on the relative contributions of music and drama in opera were to change again, and he reintroduced some traditional forms into his last few stage works, including Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg).
Until his final years, Wagner's life was characterised by political exile, turbulent love affairs, poverty and repeated flight from his creditors. His controversial writings on music, drama and politics have attracted extensive comment, notably, since the late 20th century, where they express antisemitic sentiments. The effect of his ideas can be traced in many of the arts throughout the 20th century; his influence spread beyond composition into conducting, philosophy, literature, the visual arts and theatre.

Incidentally, that music is the reason why Die Walkure The Valkyries is the one of Wagner's operas that is used as a filler of most opera seasons. Without having to stage a very expensive and costly Ring Cycle. All four lots of classical fans know Rode of the Valkyries or Walkurenritt off the top of their heads it's very recognizable.

+Lukas Hofstätter , Yes, he's very well known, but take for example composers (stravinsky, ravel, satie....), critics, and many others: all of them think Richard Wagner's masterpieces are decadent, awful and boring operas. So, he is underrated!

La música, una vez creada, pertenece a cada oyente y a los sentimientos que en cada uno inspira. Esta música es hermosa, sublime, con independencia de la intención del compositor y del uso que hayan hecho de ella ciertos desalmados.

Classical music in transmitting the voice and vision of the soul about the things that are and that are not of this world, it transcends what is said in words, is pure emotion sublime and true, that's my opinion.

@1:02:38 That, that right there has consistently sent a chill down my spine since my earliest memories of listening to the Tannhauser saga with my grandfather. There is something both haunting and majestic about it - the choice between staying within a paradise unparalleled, or returning back to the grim realities of the world in which one's duties and obligations take center-stage; it is perhaps the most stringent point of the human experience - to indulge one's baser feelings, or to uphold one's self to a higher standard. Also, those french horns blaring invoke something primal within my spirit every time!

I don't know why people have to bring in politics when they discuss music, especially Wagner's music.I don't care a tinker's cuss if he liked or disliked Jews, Frenchmen or Hottentots. His operas were outstanding. I have never heard anything more stirring than The Ride of the Valkyries and anything more poignant than the Todeslied from Tristan und Isolde
@Eorzat
@Eorzat 8 лет назад
Well, Wagner was very political, and his music can often reflect those views. It also doesn't help that a certain notorious political leader adored Wagner's music which has left a bad connotation for some listeners. For instance, his music is still banned in Israel as far as I know. So, there is some relevance in discussing politics in relation to Wagner and his works.
@penpaper9837

+Eorzat "his music can often reflect those views." -- How does this music reflect those views? What are those views? Please, tell me what part of this music reflects damning views and how such orchestration can be juxtaposed onto political discourse. Who cares what a notorious leader liked or dislike? Do you judge history through the lens of modern standards?
