Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2002 | Deepest Ireland is best experienced on its Gaelic-speaking west coast, where the rugged villages have changed little over the generations. After exploring the remote Aran Islands, we visit Galway, chase a friendly dolphin, and delve into the scenic Dingle Peninsula. Ringing with music from its rustic pubs and dotted with prehistoric forts, this region is something special. If you're to fall in love with Ireland, chances are it'll be right here. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #ireland

I just came back from a eight day tour "Heart of Ireland"...I am so in love with this country. My life is so enriched by one of your tours. I had so much to process that these videos are helping me re-live my wonderful time. Our guide and bus driver were amazing and the places we viewed and stayed were so wonderful The food was the best ever. Loved my tour.

For those wishing to fly into Ireland, I would suggest that you consider using Shannon Airport for several reasons unless you have business in Dublin, etc. The airport is rather centrally located, they have direct flights from the US, with customs infrastructure going in both directions and the Irish rental vehicle GPS system is second to none. We've travelled the major motorways, by-ways and lesser roads with ease using this system and never once opened a map or got lost. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Our way of travelling might not suit everyone, but we generally pick an area or town to visit, drive that direction, often stopping along the way for whatever grabs our attention to shop, eat, drink, take pictures, chat up the locals and then continue on. Driving is easy as long as you understand that the smaller roads are more scenic but take longer and the roundabouts can be fun as long as you follow the Irish driving rules. For my first trip, I used RU-vid to learn to circumnavigate the roundabouts properly and had no issues getting around them. Another plus, is that Ireland accepts your US driver's License without the need to qualify for or purchase an International driver's license. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~In two weeks, we saw exactly one police officer and he was going into the sub-station near the Muckross House for shift change. The biggest disappointment I ever had in or with Ireland, is that they haven't learned to how to stretch my vacation time any out longer yet. We are already planning a return trip and will be going back soon. ~~ I cannot wait to return.

To see Irish dancers with exposed midriff is a little shocking. The traditional Irish dancing costume looks more suitable. Our Irish dancing master would not allow the female dancers to wear trousers. He was a strict man who had our total respect. Please show the visitors and tourists our traditional Irish dance costume.A dress with traditional embroidery of Celtic design.Finished with a shawl and crochet collar and cuffs. The shawl held at the shoulder with a traditional, Celtic cluster of stones in a brotche.

I agree, this would have been good to see as well, the traditional costumes are beautiful and as important a part of the heritage as the dance itself. But the danger with setting these traditions on pedestals and looking at them as purely historical risks negating the fact that these art forms are alive and moving with the times. The costumes change just as the fashions do, I think it's important to see traditions in a modern context, it keeps it alive and relivent.

This is a touching documentary ; you must have roots close by. These are ancient lands, where so much happened. I appreciate how you put into perspective the cruel harm done to the Irish through the centuries by the Brits. Cromwell was a nasty piece of work, and his generals were no better. The modern threat (international assassins) are the cosmopolite Bankers. For God's sake, KEEP THEM AWAY FOR EVER. Their specialty is taking over (through finance, the only thing they know) local culture and and stifling it, while soon after claiming it to be theirs. An old Robber Tribe tactic they're fond of resorting to. In the meantime God protect and preserve Eire. May she and her people live and thrive INDEPENDENTLY forever.

Sadly, Fungi the friendly dolphin has been missing for a few weeks. The whole of Ireland is gutted. Dingle is absolutely stunning on a clear, rain free day. I spent a few summers in the Irish collages around dingle. Great experience. My Irish language skills are still woeful though ( my fault, not the Irish teachers).

I saw this today on June 17th 2019 and this part of the Emerald Isle more got the Iona classic, "Irish Day" flowing in my head. And playing that along side these beautiful verdant hills across the ancient western coast just hit me in the heart strings. I don't know how one could be Irish and not get teary-eyed to that song. One day I will go there. It's a quest that this Alabama-born son from a family of Joneses wouldn't miss for anything.

Sir I liked your program very much. You talked about what the English did to the Irish taken land . At the start the map showed a border dividing north of Ireland I am from the North I find this to be an insult. I consider myself full Irish citizen that border is man made and is approaching one hundred years old.

How refreshing those Irish teens looked. None had their eyebrows, lips, cheeks, or tongues full of piercings. The girls didn't have their faces caked with make up, or blue hair, and the boys had regular hair cuts and dressed like boys! In the states these days at times it is difficult to tell the boys from the girls and visa versa.

It does even where I live in Dublin is on the foothill of the mountains 20 minutes from Dublin city and 20 minutes away from the seaside spots aswell only downside is its expensive, iit would be better to live in Cork, Waterford kerry or Galway they are still expensive but not as expensive as Dublin. You could live in any of these Citys and your not far away from good scenery and there all only about an hour or so drive away from one another and you can also get buses aswell to these places for about 20 euro for a return ticket.

Big shout out to the people of the Republic and of the Six Counties. Am from Australia, had the greatest time recently. Mind-blowing how much beautiful scenery, mountains, castles etc are crammed into an island nation probably about 1 tenth the size of New South Wales (I know for a fact that driving from Sydney to Newcastle which are well within the borders of New South Wales is the equivalent of driving from Cork to Belfast which are at opposite ends of the country. Incredible! Love the people there! The pubs are fantastic! Went to Ireland for a cultural experience and because I love all things Titanic. Ended up having the mightiest craic. And I will be back. Incredible country
