This video is a review & demo on the latest HALO EFX removable paint, they've had a major breakthrough, now you can apply any automotive clear coat over their peelable clear base called "Matte Clear". I am a big fan of this product and in this video, we'll be spraying the front end on my own Corolla, I also added some flakes for some added effect. We'll have a look at how well it peels off in a test section and as always I'll include detailed information on how to apply for the best results.

I'm really surprised how well it came out Gunny, love the roof the black has a great gloss finish and you can even see in the video how nice those flakes are. As your car is ceramic coated I'm wondering how durable it will be over time as there must be less adhesion over the coating vs a normal polish, if it gets a small chip in the coating will it start to lift around the chip? time will tell, John UK.

One thing about using xylene, be careful around plastic, from memory it tends to melt it

I used to be a certified Halo EFX installer and one thing I can tell you is for long term, using pearls or flakes on the beginning coats isn’t good for peel ability. It tends to not peel as easy and the flashes would embed themselves into your clear. Doing 3-4 coats first then the pearls or flakes would give you a good base so it does peel and not embed. My company was 580Dipped in Oklahoma. Orange peel also is going to happen with any coating like that. The more coats you put the more orange peel but also the better durability and peel. Also yeah you “can” use clear over it but it’s never been good for the peeling because the chemicals in clear would bond so much into the halo that would make it harder to peel at the end.

Now you've got me a bit worried I will have flakes all over my original paint 😬 but I'm sure I'll get them out with a clay bar and buff or even tungsten if nothing else works.

@@TheGunmanChannel if it’s not on there too long and doesn’t bake in the Sun it wouldn’t be too big of an issue but when you were peeling your door handle in the video, that’s definitely going to be amplified the longer it’s on the vehicle. All peel coatings remove easiest right when they are complete. The longer they sit to cure, the stronger the bond will be and the tougher it will be to peel off.

Bruce you're referring to Real Clear. This is new Matte Clear. Very different.

@@dyldo34 I get that but the way it peeled after the 2k and also the flakes on the first coats go with anything when it comes to removables. I’ve had the misfortune of living through it with dip, old halo, new halo, and even raail.

Looks like a great product... I wonder how well it would stand up to a power washing of the car though? Would it start to lift at the edges over time?

Hi gunman, I am planning to paint the hardtop of an Mazda MX5 that was taken back to the substrate by a previous owner. The substrate is Sheet Molded Composite (SMC). I'm wondering what process you would recommend, especially what to start with to isolate the substrate and prevent the risk of a reaction. To fill scratches and imperfections in the substrate, would you fill before or after an isolating coat? Really appreciate your thoughts. Cheers, Alex

I always start by sanding well, even just use some 400 grit by hand to open it back up, I never trust old prep. Then apply 3 coats of 2k primer, you may find that some pin holes open up, nevermind, just fill them with some fine filler. Then sand the whole thing down with 400 orbital sander. You may be best off using some more primer to seal it down again. Then use my standard prep methods prior to paint. I'm sure you've seen enough of my prep vids. So yeah, pin holes are your biggest concern, you don't need plastic primer or any other specific adhesion promoter but some people like to use it.

Hay Gunman, I tried a sample on a panel and after 6 coats let it dry, but the tape / pinstripe tape pulled up the Halo, even if I sprayed a bit of the xylene.. is this because I didn't 2k over the top, would that make edge taping better..cheers. love you work.

It's a much better option, there is no glue that will bake in, no razors near your paint and it looks much better than any vinyl wrap will ever look.

Is the DeVILBISS FLG5 a good choice for a cheap gun to spray this stuff? I already have it with both a 1.4 and 1.8 needle.

hi gunny, ive seen a video of someone applying the halo fx clear matte down and then just any basecoat and clear over the top of that, do you know if this way is viable or is mixing binder free paint in the only way?

I had the same idea and I don't see why it wouldn't work. I asked the Halo Efx got and his reply was "why would you want to do that" lol. I'd say ideally get the no binder base but I bet that other way would work

Can we use only the Real Clear alone as a paint defender with out base and 2k clearcoat?

My understanding u use halo efx material and then use the matte clear before you use any clear of choice if I’m correct me @gunman

Can you apply the coating then put basecoat and clear over top? To have a peelable paint job for example?

I was wondering that myself but as it turns out it's not really necessary because you can just add the colour to the peelable base, you just need the raw colour, you can't have it mixed with binder that's the only thing to remember.
