Mr Johnson - you are the only craftsman whom I could honestly say, I would gladly pay you to work in your shop for a chance to learn directly from you. I don't think I'd be alone in this.

It's noteworthy how he developed a relaxed "video personality" along all the time he is producing videos. It looks like one has become friends with "Thomas Johnson from Gorham Maine" and we are there just to hang out a bit and chat.

Hi Tom fantastic work as always… what intrigues me still is whether the artisans and carpenters back in that period knew anything about wood movement or not! Because the cross grain of the molding is kinda obvious NoNo at present 🙃!

Great stuff. I have a couple of old mirrors with paintings on the reverse side of the glass and lots of plaster balls, moldings and ornaments around the frame. Have you made any videos where you repaired the plaster work or gilding? It seems easy to over think working on these mirrors. Some repairs could be simple paint touch-ups and others may need real gilding and reproduction of the plaster work. I'd love to see how you balance these factors to get the results you want without needing to involve the Smithsonian. Thanks.

Nice matching, but we're it me, I'd have only sought to match the repair pieces, and left the box as it. Maybe a light shellac.

It's hard to get your head around the fact that back in those times, most things were made from scratch. There were very few factories, and no stores where you could buy building supplies. Most things were self-made, even the tools and nails.

With the mirror, a raking light appears to show lifting/bubbling of the flat veneer above the glass frame, altho no obvious splits or holes into which glue might be injected. Anything else that could have been done to flatten thatcarea out (heat/moisture/pressure) or was that beyond the scope of the job?
@dlevi67
@dlevi67 4 часа назад
I don't think it's lifting or bubbling. Early(ish) 18th century mouldings were usually cut from small sections of decoratively grained wood. These were then glued to the substrate 'cross-grained' i.e. at 90 degree from the grain in the substrate, to maximise their decorative value (there would be many small repetitions of the grain pattern, rather than a long and relatively uninteresting single pattern). With time and natural changes in temperature and humidity, it's normal that these short pieces of veneer 'curl' a bit at their ends, and leave small gaps between each other. They can't really be straightened; one can sand them flat if they are thick enough and not too 'curly', but - apart from the fact that I personally find the 'breaks' very attractive - this is generally seen as a bad move in terms of destroying a sign that the moulding is old and original.
@tedbaker8291
@tedbaker8291 3 часа назад
I'm not sure we're looking at the same thing. What I *think* I saw were raised areas -- bubbles, in effect -- in the flat piece above the repaired veneer and mirror, not at the edges. See 7:30, 9, 14, and 15, roughly. @dlevi67
@dlevi67
@dlevi67 19 минут назад
@@tedbaker8291 Ah - sorry, misunderstood what you were referring to. I think that's largely an effect of light, together with the fact that the highly figured veneer on the crest has tended to break along the grain in some places. At 2:20 you can also see how the substrate of the crest (with grain that runs parallel to the short edges of the mirror) has curled, adding stress to the veneer, but it doesn't seem to be lifted or bubbling - at least to me. If you look (e.g.) at 14:55, it seems like there are "waves" running across the crest, but if you look at 14:33, the surface appears to be flat. You can see the breakages along the grain at 15:05 - note how many of the breaks correspond to the ends in the moulding pieces or the edge of a curve in the fret.

Thomas, I have watched many of your videos and have always wondered why you try to re-use the fasteners you take out. There may be better solutions in today's materials. You always use slotted screws, a bane to woodworkers, in my opinion.
