I see WEALTH, FAME, and POWER being something that Luffy needs to have in him to be the Pirate King, all qualities of a KING. But there's more to it than that. What sets Luffy apart is the allies he surrounds himself with who stand for these qualities. WEALTH - Nami, FAME - Usopp, POWER - Zoro, and the unspoken one, being a DREAMER - Sanji. Luffy has all of this already, but he also needs to depend on others sometimes. All of them influence and inspire each other to a degree, but together with Luffy's innate desire of FREEDOM, this is what will propel them to a status even further than Roger and his crew back in the day.

Another thought on the whole past/present/future dynamic between the monster trio: As traumatic as both Luffy and Sanji's pasts are for them, and how much those pasts shaped them as individuals, they both seem to have generally moved on. Luffy never talks about his family or background, to the point where the rest of the crew didn't even know he had a brother until they met Ace on Alabasta. Sanji takes it even farther, not even seeming to have thought about his own history before meeting Zeff much until Judge and the rest of Germa forced their way back into his life. Only for Sanji to once again move on, and outright separate himself and Vinsmoke Sanji as people. Zoro, in contrast, has never really gotten over Kuina's death, which is best seen in his interaction with Tashigi. Zoro is basically incapable of dealing with Tashigi's existence, solely because of how she reminds of Kuina, despite not having any direct connection to her (that we or Zoro know of, at least). Even post-timeskip, where Tashigi really doesn't look all that much like Kuina anymore, Zoro still can't deal with her at all. Zoro's not just a traditional guy, he's also far more stuck in his own past then Luffy or Sanji.

Waiting for GLR videos has the same hype as waiting for anime and manga releases..

more specific examples of how the monster trio compliment each other is that luffy is a simple-minded moron who focuses hard on one thing, somewhere that sanji assists with as he has shown time and time again that he is very capable in looking at the bigger picture in which he gives the crew an advantage, most prevalent in the water 7/ennies loby saga. sanji has his chivalry weakness which other crewmembers (primarily the female ones) handewl but since luffy has 0 qualms about beating baddies up i'd say that in isolation he is the one who'd make up for sanji's weakness. zoro has no sense of direction and luffy is too moronic to help him since he's just go where zoro goes if they went together somewhere, sanji is great at keeping zoro in check, and the same ghoes in the reverse about sanji's pervertedness, zoro keeps sanji on track. luffy even has some shortcomings as a leader as he struggles with putting leadership before his relationships with his friends, which is something zoro helped him with (specifically refering to ussop). the only thing i cant think of is a shortcomign zoro has that luffy makes up for other than that luffy's mastery of haki is better than zoro's

My Opinion and Thoughts Rayleigh was called "The Dark King" as he was always in Roger's shadow. He had the power of a king but was a shadow in front of Roger's blinding light. He has a mastery of Conqueror's Hake (Advanced too) and could use all the other types of Haki with extreme mastery. So as he was a second in command with enough strength to form his own strong crew, but stayed in the light of Gol D. Roger he is called the 'The Dark King' Silvers Rayleigh. This is pure speculation on my part. Oda could have also wanted his to have a badass epithet. Also I'm pretty sure you will not read this comment, but I sure hope you do.

Something I've always echoed since Jinbe finally joined the crew is that we need a New World Monster Trio. People have been saying that because Jinbe is stronger than Sanji then Jinbe needs to take over his place in the monster trio, personally I believe Jinbe is stronger and far more experienced than even Zoro so it would not work to kick out any member of the monster trio just for Jinbe's sake. What I think will fix the trio situation is instead kicking Sanji, Zoro and also Luffy out of the Monster Trio and then comprising it of *actual* _(visually beast-like)_ *monsters.* The current members of the monster trio should go on to become a new trio which should absolutely be labelled "The Three Kings" as you put it, while in an ideal situation where all current Straw Hat Candidates go on to join the crew after Wano then Yamato & Carrot would 100% fit snuggly into the New World Monster trio alongside Jinbe (and I dunno, Otama, Momonosuke & Caribou will go on to be the... 3 Horsemen. Plague, War & Famine. I can't believe how coincidentally that fits). tl;dr : Kick Luffy, Zoro & Sanji out of the monster trio and make them the Three Kings Fill empty slots in the Monster Trio with actual beasts like Jinbe, Carrot & Yamato.

Roger also had 3 kings.. Roger himself, Silvers Rayleigh and Oden who inherited Wano as the Feudal Lord.. Also this doesn't sound like a theory but a really insightful interpretation of the story. I loved it!

Loved the video, and I would almost extend this to the crew in its entirety. You've used a metaphor before suggesting Luffy has been speedrunning One Piece (franchise as well as in-world ideal I guess), and the only reason that has been possible is due to everyone around him, through a mixture of his crews' own ambition and their loyalty to his. In contrast, most of Roger's crew are seemingly gept irrelevant deliberately, with the exception of Rayleigh, but then I've always considered Dark King to suggest more that's he's a hidden king or a king in the shadow of Rojer. If Scopper ever ends up being important I'll be all for your trio... I think that Roger's crew were there more to experience and pass on the King's legacy rather than create it in the first place.

THEORY: The One Piece is an Eyepatch that used to belong to JoyBoy and it can be the key to unlocking the secrets of the void century, Oda has stated that he is dying to draw a certain character with an eyepatch and I think he is referring to JoyBoy, I think JoyBoy is the first ever pirate to wear an eyepatch and Luffy will find it in Laugh Tale and use it somehow, then after people see him wear the eyepatch, it will become the new passion trend for pirates, Roger Laughed because he worked so hard just for an eye patch that he cannot take because he was too early. The One Piece being an Eyepatch is such a cool and cute idea because the main thing our protagonist is fighting for is the most iconic pirate accessory known to man Also Oda knew what the One Piece is going to be ever since the first manga chapter came out, not yet coming up with world government or poneglyphs or ancient weapons and void centuries, so that means the one piece might not be a deeply lore heavy reveal, it might actually be a very simple treasure, like an eyepatch a legendary pirate used to own

Just to add a bit of things you missed, Luffy was willing to give up his dream for Sanji by invading Big Mom's territory, Roger had Oden a Shogun (king) backing him up as well.

we actually do have at least 1 example of luffy being willing to give up his dream to save the others - The amazon lily sub arc where hancock offers him either freedom or the chance to save others.

Holy shit this is an incredible analysis on the story. All three of them tying to each other in multiple ways. I'm gonna say this again, jokes aside this is one of the most comprehensive videos I've seen regarding Oda's potential character work on the series. The jokes just make this a whole better experience. Also, this whole inherited kingdom thing you brought up kind of mimics the inherited will theme of the story and could very well shut the people who've been disliking the trajectory of important lineage narrative within the monster trio.

Following mr morj's latest video about the trio that is Luffy Zoro and Nami I actually believe they are the three kings Luffy : Fame with him getting recognised as one of the most dangerous rookies thus far. Zoro : Power with his goal to be literally the most powerful. And finally Nami : Wealth with her being so greedy and liking money so much.

My guess for Rayleigh being called the 'Dark King', was because he was the man who stood in the shadow of the Pirate King, and supported Roger to get him to where he was at the time, but no one knew. Dark can also imply not knowing, like when you say you kept the secret in the dark so no one will know. Not because he has dark powers or anything like that.

Wouldn’t it be: Luffy: Fame Zoro: Power Nami: Wealth

It would make sense. Especially because of the Rocks pirates and Roger wanting to take them out. If Roger and Garp didn’t then Rocks could have became the king with Big Mom and Kiado at his side. Again supporting the three kings needed but the only problem is all wanted Wealth, Fame, and Power.

Roger also had Kozuki Oden on is crew when he earned the title of Pirate King, and Oden was the one who helped read the ponelgyphs so that they could reach Raftel. So that crew also had three kings if you count Rayliegh and Kozuki Oden

would say oden's part of the trio with roger & rayleigh(and to an extent whitebeard in a way.) with how tied to the series he's recently been. that really describes the monster trio well as they all fit the areas of wealth(which especially fits nami as well who's the true captain of the crew/a hidden 4th queen in her own important role with the trio.),fame & power that gives them an edge over the other yonko(outside shanks being trusted with roger kaido focuses on making everything his enemy alongside being tied to the past,blackbeard would've been ended quickly were it not for fate and big mom is easily outwitted past her strength without her subordinates that would ditch her if given the chance.) and a different dynamic compared to similar shonen jump types with how they make up for each others flaws with their own strengths and willing to forfeit their goals for their crews safety not putting everything on the main star except their trust which is important for a king/friends alongside freedom.

I always thought that Rayleigh was named the Dark King being the right hand man of Gol D. Roger, Rayleigh basically works as his shadow and is always at the back of the Pirate King, therefore the "Dark King" is a proxy for the "Shadow of the King"

I suggest a different theory. Luffy will be the pirate king because he would command the people who embody wealth, fame and power. Wealth, in the form of Nami who made a map of the entire world (and possibly sold it for a horrendous profit). Fame, in the form of Usopp a famed warrior of the sea. And power in the form of Zorro, the strongest swordsman.

I do fancy myself pretty proud because I had a feeling that I knew what kind of kings they were before you explained it. I was like “well Zoro is kinda like old school traditional with the bushido and samurai stuff and sanji is futuristic cuz his family and stuff and then that would make luffy the king of the present” and then you said that! Liam, I think you missed the mark with this one: Wealth, Fame and Power -> Wealth (Nami), Fame (Usopp), Power (Franky). Joking aside, we could argue all three concepts for all of them: Sanji -> Wealth (as you have stated), Fame (finding all blue would make you world known), Power (thanks to his "modifications"). Zoro -> Wealth (obtaining a triad of Saijo o wazamono), Fame (becoming known as the best swordsman), Power (you said it best) Luffy -> Wealth (inherent of becoming Pirate king), Fame (same as Wealth), Power (he's the most powerful of the three) What are your thoughts on that?

Oden was practically Shogun-in-absentia, so he can easily be called Roger's third King for anyone who wants to equate the two groups. Plus Oden was clearly an integral part to Roger becoming the Pirate King and all, to add to it.

The things required to become pirate king are Fame, Power and Wealth. Instead of Zoro, Sanji and Luffy I think it should be Zoro, Nami and Luffy. Nami represents wealth (She wants money) Zoro represents power (He wants to be the strongest swordsman) Luffy will represent fame (He will be the most famous as 1. His family 2.He will defeat kaido and big mom and become pirate king)
