Passive aiming is a very useful tool to have on a primary weapon. On a handgun it's perhaps less important, but "pistol" red dots are often used in other applications. In this video, we go over the passive night vision performance of most pistol red dots currently on the market.

I was a part of the evaluation team for a new service pistol for my agency. We've decided to add an enclosed emitter and the SIG M17 was one of the options tested. We discovered, quite by accident, that the SIG option had rather frail coatings. One of our training officers decided to clean all of the lenses on the options we were testing because they were getting dark from carbon. He used products intended to clean optics and cleaned all 4 options with the same techniques but the SIG was the only one damaged. I mention this because it's not one of the tested criteria you mentioned. The coatings we're scratched up enough that we were able to detect a slightly slower shot time among the officers using that optic. When pistol dot sights first started to gain acceptance I had no interest in them till I took John Lovell's 5 day Night Vision Professional course. In it he described the use of tritium sights with night vision and in shooting I found I was able to get regular and repeated hits at 25 yards easily but 50 yards was a much harder task (we had steel at 25 and 50). One of the other students had a Glock 17 with RMR and while I only fired a few rounds with this combination hitting at 50 was now relatively easy. This started my interest in red dot sights on pistols. Unfortunately I'm cheap and didn't dive into them until I hit 53 years of age and lost the ability to focus on iron sights. Now they are one of my favorite inventions of the century (to date). Aging is not for the weak but since many find the alternative untenable I'd suggest developing habits that lead to a fit and active lifestyle. I can still out perform many of my coworkers who are 20 years or so younger but probably not for much longer. Yes, that's a pointless digression but it's my life and I do as I please. Most people won't read this anyway.

@@williamflowers9435 for our use it's the Holosun. The feature set and layout was preferred by almost all shooters. Nothing else even came close. The pistol choices were narrowed from 4 to 2, the Glock 45 and the SIG 320 Pro (or something like that). I think the SIG came out on top though I am hoping for the Glock due to it's very well established reputation for durability and reliability.

As a guy who’s primary weapon is a m17 due to being aircrew and an easy 50% of our opps being conducted under nvg’s I wish there was more content out there on running a pistol under nvg’s. Not kicking in doors but if I do need to shoot at night it becomes incredibly counterintuitive to do so. Maybe this discussion defaults to figure something else out but still it’s a conversation I would like to hear between you and brassfacts.

If you do have night sights and still want to passive aim with your red dot, you can put some tape over them and it works fine. Peel it off after you are done. It's really easier to just use your weapon light on your pistol and aim using the daytime sighting system by raising your head up a little and looking under your tubes.
@andreivaldez2929
@andreivaldez2929 10 месяцев назад
If it's dark enough for night sights then it's probably dark enough to use a flashlight. I might be a 30yr old boomer for this but I think tritium sights on pistols are kind of dumb since they're not useful until it's really dark and then I'll be using my light to silhouette my sights and better see my target anyway.
@jfk767
@jfk767 10 месяцев назад
I prefer the PVS-14 for a number of reasons. Transitioning to white light shooting is just the first of many. I think there's a faster learning curve with a monocular than the dual tube devices. In large part because it's easier to maintain an awareness of ambient lighting conditions which is one of the fundamentals of night operations.
@PewLand
@PewLand 10 месяцев назад
@@andreivaldez2929I think one benefit of night sights at least for an EDC gun is that in a dark room you can easily see where your pistol is at when you go to bed and put the pistol in the night stand. This is a very niche pro but that's one reason I like them.

@jfk767
@jfk767 10 месяцев назад
For me the pistol comes first. It's an all day, every day thing. If things fall apart completely it may or may not get left behind. Probably not though as I'm not likely to be moving with a squad size element or larger so transitioning at close range may well be a big deal, though I don't practice transitions enough to make it a reflex. Sadly the ranges I'm a member of either don't allow it or only in one of the smaller ranges that's often in use by someone else. And sadly they aren't even working transitions.

Depending on the situation, tunnel rats have little to no room for a rifle. The same can be said about many environments. From a legal standpoint, in many states it's illegal to carry a loaded rifle in a vehicle that includes a SBR. However with that said I still consider the handgun something you use rather than have nothing, give me a rifle please.

IDK about you but while I can have my pistol on me at all times, everywhere I go... it's a lot harder to do that with my rifle and my tacticool nylon gear. And last I checked, when sh*t is hitting the fan, it doesn't stop to check if I've got all my cool guy gear on hand before it does so. The most likely case in a given scenario is that I'll be dealing with whatever happens away from my home, my go-to-war rifle, my battle belt, my plates, etc. And the gun on my belt is worth a thousand perfect builds stuck in my safe.

I used to agree that the shooting pistol under NV was very limited in general. Now my opinion is changed. Warfighting? Yeah still limited there, but for normal use (at least what I considered normal use) I found my self often just hiking around or hanging out outside with nothing more on me than my EDC pistol. In the time I've had my NV I've had run ins with angry homeless people, people on the rivers hunting for that midnight catfish, animals big and small, and naturally normal people who look at me like a lunatic for wandering around in the dark. Point being there's plenty of use case that you may need to shoot a pistol under NV as a civilian. Train on your gun and stay alert. For those wondering. L3 WP DTNVSs and a glock 19 / staccato c2 with blacked out suppressor height sights and a RMR Type 2. Never had any issues finding the dot and making shots.

I'm with you there. I'm currently living in a large city on the East Coast temporarily and wasn't able to bring a rifle with me. So in the meantime, my go-to nightfighting equipment is a G17 w/ HS407C, TLR-1HL with an IR filter, and PVS-14. Before I moved to the city, this was my go to set up when traveling as well. If I was more than a few hours from home, this came with me. I don't see any SHTF scenario using a pistol/NV combo that isn't a last stand, but in any kind of get-home during civil unrest or whatnot scenario I believe there's some merit to having the advantage of NV with the element of surprise coming from being low vis.

Im glad you brought up the holosun issues. I love holosun and mostly use their red dots, but people look the other way on some of their models being straight lemons. My gold 503 had to be RMAd 3 times in a row for parasitic battery drain (like within a week the battery would be dead). They ended up just giving me a more expensive AEMS so customer service rocks, but it sucks knowing that some of them are just straight lemons

That's a known tradeoff though. It's the same thinking behind buying a HiPoint or a PSA rifle. The low price makes the hassle of having to send back a few duds worthwhile to the people who ball on a budget. And then there's the folks who just want the darn thing to work out of the box, no questions asked. So they go for a Glock, or a Daniel Defense, or in the case of optics, an RMR.

My bear gun and conceal carry weapon is a G40 with 509ACSS on it. It is also my night vision pistol. I chose it because I figured in my activities being outdoors at night with big scary animals that also see well in the dark around... the ACSS ring would be real handy if I'm in a less than ideal shooting position. Such as fallen on my ass dodging an animal, or my hands are severely shivering. On that note, the cold killed my battery temporarily, and I switched to solar and it kept me going for the remainder of the day. While I don't think ACSS is for everyone, I feel more people should consider it as a choice for a woods gun.

I think the only reason the DPP has a reputation for being fragile is because for years it could only be compared to the RMR, which is like the best in the industry for durability.

In certain types of shtf, it may be that you don’t want to be fully overt but you arent planning on being seen. In that case night vision with a handgun on the hip makes a lot of sense to me

How tf are you wearing nods on a helmet (because how else would you aim anyway) if you're covert?
@CatholicKit
@CatholicKit 10 месяцев назад
Yeah dawg, everyone and their mom knows what night vision is from media. Metal gear solid, cod, any movies about the gwot. If you’re wearing a helmet and nv, you’re gonna be very very obvious. Even with a skull crusher or crye night cap, the monocular on your face is gonna be a dead giveaway. If you needed to not be obvious, wearing it on your neck and using it with your hand will be the only real option, and then passive aiming is pointless.

I have a crye nightcap for this purpose specifically with a pvs14. I could pull it off real quick and throw it in your backpack if had to. This would be in a semi-without rule of law type situation. Where I want to see better in the dark, ideally without being seen but a rifle is just too much for what’s going on. Also, in a just normal life situation I do like to night hike with my pvs14 because it’s hot as fuck in the desert. Comparability with my carry at that point is pretty nice

Hey, Hop. Purely because you decided to indulge in this can of worms, can I ask your opinion on pistol mounted IR illumination/IR aiming solutions and if that's even worth it? And on that topic, would it be better to for example: Go for the bare minimum and just be able to have an IR light like an X300V, or to actually spend the money on an X400V with an actual IR laser built in to try and somehow get a "more workable aiming solution" from said handgun. On a side note, I personally figure dedicating one of my handguns to exclusively night vision use seems expensive and silly, but I could be entirely wrong on that. Thanks!
@Hoplopfheil
@Hoplopfheil 10 месяцев назад
I find passive aiming with a handgun to be pretty easy with a decent optic, at handgun ranges. Aiming with a laser on a pistol is less intuitive so it just doesn't seem worth the stretch. A vampire light could be nice, something to use in a pinch and also it's easy to put the light on safe if you're concerned about illuminator ND. The X300V will fit in some holsters sized for an X300U, and the VIR II will fit in most(?) holsters sized for a TLR1.

Hey Hop, what would it take for you to review the Ryker foregrip? I'd love to hear a deep-dive on it, especially for non-AR guns where ambidexterity isn't really on the table anyway (bullpups, PTRs, BrassFact's B&T MP9, etc). I'm also curious how useful it is for guns with more recoil than 5.56 rifles (namely battle rifles and shotguns). Would I need to mail you one in order to make this video happen?

It's kind of a super shitty optic but I absolutely love it, LOL. It was a great first pistol mounted optic for my son to learn to shoot red dots but the small size also makes it handy on certain platforms. For instance, I currently have one on my Glock 42, which is my short local errands gun. It's a pain in the ass because you can't remove the slide without removing the optic, but I really don't need to remove my slide on my G42 often/ever. Short of that, it's just a cool little niche RDS that I've become quite fond of.
@fujimi715
@fujimi715 10 месяцев назад
@mjolnirdynamics8789 you can take off just the battery cap and remove the slide. I run it on a G19X and G26. It's weakness is the mount. Doesn't seem to stay zeroed and solid for more than a few hundred rounds

I've been trying to find out about the NV performance of Crimson Trace's pistol red dots for a while. Virtually no information about it exists on the internet that I've been able to find, aside from a random-ass, now two-year-old Reddit post from a sales rep saying that the Night Vision settings aren't "calibrated correctly".

Does the RMR HD foward light sensor do anything for you? Outdoors it probably doesn't. I put up with tridium bloom as it helps me find the freaking dot. Plus i don't stare at it for a long time. Maybe I'm just coping. Also, the Surefire X400VH works brilliantly. Sucks that it costs more than the pistol.

Look up the Sage Dynamics video on the RMR HD, he does some pretty intensive lighting scenarios and the new forward facing sensor is awesome. You can set the HD to automatically adjust to a low-mid brightness setting or a mid-high setting. I want to get my hands on one of the new RMR HD models and use my current RMR type 2 for something else (maybe as a LPVO piggyback).

One thing that bugs the shit out of me is that piggy back mounts for DPP do not also support the sig red dots. The R1P, and R2 do not have the front lug post hole like the RomeoX does, so really the R10 and R2 have the same thread pattern as the DPP but they do not share the exact footprint for mounts unfortunately

I don't understand why the DPP footprint isn't the industry standard. 28inlbs of torque vs 15inlbs on the RMR footprint. The DPP footprint has thicker beefier screws and every DPP optic, Romeo2, EFLX, DPP, Romeo1 has better window size, glass clarity, night vision performance, and emitter clarity than the RMR.
