Training legs is a lot harder than training upper body, so it should be done for building mental fortitude as well. Never skip leg day, because that would be the beginning of the end... When you train your legs, training your upper body will feel like you deserve that. You can only progress by making yourself uncomfortable (even if just a little).

AlphaDestiny training footage baby pleeeeeease!
@AlexLeonidas
@AlexLeonidas 7 лет назад
Yeah that's what George Leeman said and it makes sense especially for behind the back deadlifts. What I keep thinking about though...is whether wide stance is superior. I mean a wide will build a close, but close won't build a wide. On one end we got Leeman saying to do narrow stance for deadlift carryover, and on the other end Louie Simmons says to do wide. Hard to believe which is correct yknow
@19HM98
@19HM98 7 лет назад
AlphaDestiny it's all down to specificity if you ask me. Wide is good because it builds your regular squat AND will help your deadlift (since wide does build close), so it kills 2 birds with 1 stone. Narrow is good because it puts you in an incredibly similar position to your deadlift, sitting back with a close stance means you're forced to lean over a lot (much like the start of a pull)

This is 100% true. I neglected legs and built my upper body for my first year of lifting. The newbie gains came, but I was left with a weak core, a hurting back, and poor muscle endurance. Thankfully my legs do not appear small, (they're definitely weak) but I've learned that it is a *necessity* not an option. Eager to see what my body can really do now that I'm implementing full body routines and including legs. Sound advice as always Alex.

Man, it's awesome how Alex always preaches work capacity. After grip strength work it's the most overlooked/undervalued aspect of training. My main motivation for squats, deadlifts, etc is the intensity it provides. Also, if you want leg power/work capacity, do HILL SPRINTS. Just doing them for 20 min 2x p/wk yields HUGE results.

I didnt understand half of what u wrote bruh but yeh my bench got stronger from squatting 3x a week and I also increased my bench once a week to 3x a week too but I noticed that my body got stronger overall from squatting and that helped me to push my bench I believe or maybe the fullbody program gave me super saiyan power im not sure but something happened.

the only reason why i dont hit legs is because ive heard that doing squats and stuff like that affect growth. im 5'4 and only 16 so theres chances of me still growing a few inches and i dont want to affect it, but i have made some great muscle on my legs by doing cardio being that i was running with heavy weight on me (went from weighing 215 to being 173 right now in just 5-6 months)
@AlexLeonidas
@AlexLeonidas 7 лет назад
Provided that you use proper form and do not get injured, it will not stunt your growth. Actually many coaches have argued that squats and deadlifts enhance growth due to the growth hormone release.
@TrueKivan
@TrueKivan 7 лет назад
I'm totally mental about my legs, everything else always lags behind them since no matter how little time I have, how much stress and shit I alwayd find time to squat, and this is why I enjoy your novice program as it makes me squat thrice a week. Glorious. Add around 200km of cycling to and from work and the gym weekly, lots of walking at work and this might be why I manage my recovery just fine. Just used to this, especially cycling.

How about leg training increasing muscle building hormones? As soon as I started training squats and deads as a beginner my progress blew up. I felt like a new man. I never had such a feeling from training my upper body.
@AlexLeonidas
@AlexLeonidas 7 лет назад
Honestly I believe the claims are overhyped. Little fluctuations in hormone levels will not affect the total levels in the grand scheme of things. It's a minor benefit at best. But you know what, if it helps gym bros stay motivated to train legs let them believe it!
@DigitalHaze65536

I am that guy with the big upper body and mediocre legs. Most of my mass occurred from manual labor and gasp, lifting with machines at the gym, not a squat or deadlift occurred until I had at least 85ish% of the mass that I have (upper body).....and the rest of the 15% I believe was simply from getting my upper body lifts better after I had started free weight squats/deadlifts. 5' 7" 198 pounds 23 1/2" small leg, 24" for the "big" leg. I have some fat but i'm the body type that stores little fat on arms or legs....mostly all gut. Arms 16 3/4" Anyhow the most I ever squatted (free weight) was whole 255 for sets of 5 lol, Deadlift a whole 315....I can't do them without screwing my back up. (old inflexible man....) I really don't think I'd magically have 17"+ super lean arms if squatted 405+ for sets of 5+, I'd just have legs more like yours. (26" right?) This is with benching 240 for sets of 6....and doing god knows what (700+) for my back pulling heavy sets of rolls off air shafts at work. (with a hoist but there is still tension when the core rubs on the shaft) BTW thanks to YOUR advice a couple of years ago I have found that the single leg-leg press actually makes my legs grow, they were 1/2" - 1" smaller before I started doing them. (I've only been doing them for 3 months! though) If you have a bad back they are your best bet I think. (hoping for 25" eventually)

do single leg exercises like split squats, pistols, lunges and do things like hyperextensions and the prowler/sled push and pull (run fast with it, dont load it up and go slow). they hit the legs hard but they are exercises that cant be loaded really heavy so packing mass is difficult with them (unless you're a noob). and dont neglect your calves

Dude is finally adding a background. He's finally gotten around to spending a bit for his videos, props. Best background would be your home gym when you finally get one. But for now, I personally suggest a black/gray/off white background with a small AlphaDestiny logo somewhere upper right? I emphasize small because too big would be off putting as it's too in-my-face marketing of your brand. Logo would be something Alpha, not wolf ofcourse as Christian Guzman already has that on lock down. That said, a bear would be great. You always talk about Bear-mode, it's alpha, and it's a small nod to Canada went to visit family there and woke up to a bear in the backyard lol. This ended up being another long comment. I though it would too, as I've notice even with above the knee rack pulls and hack Rack pulls, my quads were getting bigger, so I though if I trained my legs more, my rack pull should go up as they still have to extend to get the weight up.

Hey Alex, i've been lifting for a year now but been following bro splits and push - pull, until 3 weeks ago that i started following your novice program, I enjoy going to the gym 5 times a week, what do you think about Monday, Wednesday and Friday doing your novice program and on Tuesday and Thursday doing some squats and extra leg work? p.s i have a lot of free time to go to the gym and to recover. Keep up the great quality content. I know you'd like us to follow your program exactly as written, but i feel i have good recovery and work capacity that i would like to train legs a little bit more often.

The muscle will get bigger which is a good thing, so you must make them visible by doing cardio

I have a question. I have some knee pain no matter if I train or not. I did a MRI scan and it shower no actual problem with join or bone or what ever in the knee but still it hurts when I do a simple body squat... will the heavy low rep high sets training in some way fix this ??? or will it make it even worse ?!

Yo Alex, should we be concerned about spinal compression when following a program such as NE that includes tons of heavy lifts such as rack pulls, squats, farmer walks, rows, shrugs, etc? Especially considering that it is impossible to tell if someone already has spinal compression and/or bulging discs without an MRI and training heavy could potentially make their invisible condition worse. If so do you recommend stretches that decompress the spine after a heavy workout? Do you believe a strong low back will help prevent spinal compression? Thx for your time.

Legs 2x a week has been the real deal for me, it allows me to get a lot of volume in over the week, more so than the typical 1x a week bro approach. The gains have been a lot better! yet a lot of bros are brainwashed into thinking that 1x a week is the only way to do it, sure, 1x can work for some people (mainly more advanced guys who are strong already), but so many guys have got mediocre leg gains and should reconsider their approach! also, my neck growth seems to be stuck at 18 inches flexed, I'm not sure i'm doing enough volume although I can visibly see my neck looks more muscular now..4 sets of back, and 4 for front curl a week? any more needed?

frequency is key for naturals. at least 2x a week, 3 is best. also consider working side to side as well as front to back for more thickness

It is so much easier to cut when you train legs frequently.

Do you agree that high frequency is the best way to get stronger and build muscle? For example a 6 day per week upper/lower routine if I'm not exceeding my MRV?

if you have lover body but no upper body ist easier to build your upper body , but if you have upper body and no legs you have a problem!

I almost never break a sweat during upper body lifts but as soon as I start squatting or deadlifting I look like someone poured water on me and I sometimes even get a little winded.

I feel everyone should half ass their leg training until they develop chicken legs. Then you can control how big you want your legs since they grow so fast. What I see happen in most people who do the big 3 lifts is the legs overshadow their upper body and end up with the classic Minotaur Powerlifter physique

Do box squats and deadlifts man, hit some sled pulls and leg curls while you're at it too. Build from there

So is push/pull better than upper/lower because if one does legs in the beginning of push/pull it induces higher work capacity?

Hey Alpha I really like your channel and I like the Bear mode physique but I found that there are a big part of girls in my hightschool that are addicted to kpop idols. They love those girly boys. what makes femenin boys attractive? Arent strong men more appealing? What happened to our society for this to happen?
@AlexLeonidas
@AlexLeonidas 7 лет назад
Social conditioning. But let me tell you, what REALLY makes their pussies mad wet is a real, masculine man. Also recognize that these high school girls are very immature and have strange tastes. As they get older they will find these kpop idols less attractive.

Thanks for the reply! Maybe with so many "girly boys" in our society, masculine man become even more appealing for women
