In this installment of Essential Classical Music, I cover the best recordings of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection.” This video is taken from my larger video covering the major symphonies and their best recordings. Featured conductors include Klemperer, Rattle, Barbirolli, and Stokowski, among others.

As a Mahler devotee since the late 1960's I have heard a multitude of recordings of all his works. It's always interesting to hear other people's opinions on their favorites. Music speaks to each of us uniquely as individuals. What greatly appeals to one may not evoke the same response in another. I want music to affect me. I would rather hear some mistakes and have the music move me than hear a brilliantly articulated performance that does not. Some of your choices do that for me, others don't. I know you aren't soliciting my recommendations, so I won't offer them. Thanks much for your uploads, which I am enjoying thoroughly.

@@paulhenner8914 Okay, you asked for it. My discovery of Mahler's music many years ago led me to learn more about his life and times, by means of formal biographies, as well as reminiscences from those who knew and worked with him. Mahler was an emotional man, who could erupt in anger, weep unashamedly in sadness, and laugh himself to tears at a good joke. He was an outdoorsman who loved nature, hiking in the mountains, rowing, swimming and bicycling. Despite his small stature, he was physically very strong and robust until late in his life. He spoke in a deep, stentorian, bell-toned voice. The more familiar with him I became, the more I heard him speaking to me in his music. My taste in Mahler leans toward the more emotionally intense interpretative style. For the 2nd, I like Bernstein, Walter, and Ozawa, among others, but my personal favorite is Klaus Tennstedt's 1989 live recording with the London Philharmonic.

Just subbed. Love the content so far. That Rattle performance with CBSO got me into Mahler. It's so lively and powerful, and the sound quality is impeccable. Almost feels like you're there in the concert hall

i have all three Klemperers, the Rattle, Bruno Walther (yes the 1957 and 1958, Carnegie Hall) and Bernstein. My fav is the Walther live from Carnegie Hall - you have some excellent recommendations - thank you much for taking ime to make the video!

Thanks for the interesting review! You mentioned Barbiroli's recording! There is also his stunning live recording with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1965.

@@paulhenner8914 What about Ozawa? Ivan Fisher? MTT?

I have all of the Mahler recordings Ivan Fisher has done to-date.............In fact I cut my teeth on Mahler with his recordings, being an audiophile I used to favour his recordings as they are all SACD's however as my understanding of Mahler's music increased I found his performances whilst beautifully played by his excellent orchestra a little incepted and lacking in passion & fire............I mean the ever serious Klemperer can summon up some fabulous passion & fire ! Ozawa I find myself liking more specially as he aged, and I have his complete set with the Boston...........I don't know if you are aware they are a bout to release him re-recording his excellent Mahler first with his much loved [ as I also admire ] Saito Kinen Orchestra . This was recorded shortly before his death and as I find that like a good wine he improves with age I think it with be a performance not to be missed ! ! What about Gielen and Bertini who I would put them a close second to my much loved Bernstein ? Also on Audite the recordings of Kubelik ..............not as well known but they are even better than his set on DG ? ?
