Thank you for the history lesson! in my ignorance i did not know of the French origin of Malbec. I am seeking out a French Malbec from a sommelier friend. He says he has a good one from Cahor. I'm pretty pumped. I fell in love with Malbec from an Argentinian producer Catena. Their stuff is tremendous!

When I think of Malbec I immediately think of South America. Here in Canada, the prices are comparable for the quality and the selection. As I do tend to enjoy a nice bold wine--Malbec is my "go to". Although imported French wines are on the pricier side, I will definitely have to check out the French Cahors malbec. Interesting about the character differences. Great video, Marc. I learned a lot. Merci! Darryl

Great video Marc, I have never had a Melbec before. I’ve been away from wines for sometime, I fortunately have rediscovered it because of a close friend. I have missed the discussions, arguments and just general all-around things that go along with sitting with a friend or friends over a glass of wine. I have definitely grown in age and in now in my late 50s and truly have discovered that I enjoy wine again. And I have an strong curiosity about Melbec. I am very much interested in trying both French, Argentina and since I live in the Central valley of California, Can you give me a couple of recommendations. And if this helps in a recommendation, I do very much enjoy a very strong and bold wine. Thanks again!

Hi Marc and greetings from Finland! These videos have been a great help navigating through the wine world. In my beginning steps of wine exploration I have taken quite a liking to Portuguese wines. I think Portuguese wines, and their grape varietals such as Touriga Nacional, are really pleasant and not too demanding for a beginner. I’d like to ask if there are plans or a chance to get a video about Portuguese wines? Their wines seem to be very overlooked and I read about something like 98% of Portuguese wines are drank by the Portuguese themselves!
@wine-living
@wine-living 5 лет назад
Hello Eero! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I can definitely do a segment on Portuguese wines. There are so many red grapes and there are so many great values that get overlooked. I've fallen a bit behind on my videos as of late, but I think this would be a great way to get back into this series. Thanks so much for the suggestion. I'll let you know when I make one.

Sad to watch your video so long after it was uploaded, but can´t help pointing out that the malbec wine you presented from my country (Argentina) is a entry level ultra low budget malbec that hardly represents our malbec. Otherwise, nice job!

Thx for the new video Marc. So happens I'm looking for suggestions on a few Malbec brands that are under $15 that you may recommend. I asked one sommelier about Catena and Alamos, she said they're ok but they are bigger mass producers. I do want to try one from Argentina and France.
@wine-living
@wine-living 5 лет назад
Hi James, thanks for watching the video... the one bottle of Clos Triguedina in this video is $16 at retail, so there's that... I would definitely recommend that. There's another brand from Cahors called Clos la Coutale, which is under $15 but sometimes hit-or-miss as far as quality. If you prefer something a bit more mainstream, look for Norton and Trivento brands from Argentina.
@ingridfrancetravels
@ingridfrancetravels 5 лет назад
I tried 2016 Antucura Malbec from Vista Flores/Mendoza, Argentina $13.99 and 2016 Norton Reserva Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina $11.99. I noticed bold blackberries and spices. Thanks for the information about Cahors, France. I have to look for that one. I was wondering if it was necessary to decant Malbec wines and for how long?
@wine-living
@wine-living 5 лет назад
Hi Ingrid, thanks for watching! Decanting is less for certain grapes, and more for wines of a certain age. The longer a wine spends in the bottle the more "closed" it becomes, meaning, it needs to get out of the bottle and stretch its legs out a bit, after a long rest. I've decanted some older wines (20 years old) for anywhere from two hours up to a day. Some wine professionals claim that decanting is good for all red wines, no matter how old. I would suggest that if you want to decant, go ahead - it probably won't hurt. It would be interewsting to buy two bottles of the same wine and try one straight out of the bottle, and the other decanted. See if you can taste a difference!

You got a new subscriber as a level 1 WSET student. Is a Malbec able to vintage? How bold is a Malbec? Close to a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, a Merlot, Rioja, Chianti, Cab Franc.
@wine-living
@wine-living 3 года назад
Hi Chris, thanks so much for watching and commenting. Absolutely, Malbec ages well. In fact it's one of the "secret" ingredients in some of the finest Bordeaux wines that helps give them complexity and more body. And it often depends on the region and producer, but Argentine Malbec tends to be pretty bold and oaky, along the lines with A California Cabernet. The French Malbec, also known as "Cot" is more often lighter and more tart. Good luck with your WSET Level 1 and let me know if you have any other questions!
