For loose joints, you can put superglue into the joints and by moving them, you don't allow the parts to bond with each other thus making a thin layer of dry glue that will tighten the joint

In "Gunpla" models, for most of the articulations they typically use a combination of a regular hard plastic part (often a ball) inserted into a softer plastic "holder". That's basically how they deal with tolerance and friction. But of course, it means they need to design more parts with a more complicated assembly and engineering.

I tried printing some action figures with my FDM printer and discovered that small pinched-off pieces of Teflon plumbers tape work really well for adding friction and smoothness in the joints if they are too loose. Sometimes I will place 2-3 pieces on top of a ball before pushing it in place and it goes in easier yet keeps it from getting loose; you can always pop it out and add more if it slides out or compresses also.

I think going with a very flexible resin will deliver better results than trying a hard resin to try and reduce wear. Because the flexibility should also help reduce wear, and allow for tighter joints.

My main aim with 3d printing is to make some custom 1/6th scale figures, and the one thing I've struggled to get a good answer on is the type of resin that has the flexibility to 'pop' things like hands onto wrist pegs. It seems to be the holy grail of resin printing.
@chamoo232
@chamoo232 2 года назад
I have seen 3d printing used for custom 1/6 a lot on facebook groups but none I have seen 3d print the bodies. They use bodies sold specifically for customs. They are cheaper than resin. Some with visible articulations but some have metal frames and silicone bodies to hide all the joints. The 3d printing is just used for the outfits, heads and things like that.
@chindie88
@chindie88 2 года назад
@@chamoo232 Yes the body is bought in. But you have issues where, for instance, a figure is wearing gloves with a particular design or needs to have particular hand gestures where you would need to design a set of specific hands, which pop onto a peg at the wrist. That 'give' in the material that lets the joint pop on and off, but still hold firm, is a very, very difficult thing to nail down it seems. You can get around out with heads, using inserts or designing the connection to avoid the need for the pop on and off aspects, but hands (and to a lesser extent, boots) are unavoidable.
@chamoo232
@chamoo232 2 года назад
@@chindie88 Maybe a separated socket is a viable solution for hands as well. A small cylinder that you print flat with the peg hole on top. Print it in a flex resin. They are kinda rubbery and would have more grip than regular resin. Then you just need to design the hands with a hole for those inserts to fit in.

A lot of these modellers are designing with ball and socket joints which would be fine if they were also accounting for a rubber polycap. Printing something that fits together more like a lego hand and lightsaber handle can allow for a sturdier snap fit with a more stable range of articulation than the ball joint. It would take more parts but would be easier to assemble, avoid the ball joint slop and more stable over the long term.
@Bakamoichigei
@Bakamoichigei 2 года назад
Designing for polycap-style joints and connections is the way to go. Between the fact that you can literally buy runners of polycaps from companies like Kotobukiya, and we can just _print our own_ with flexible resins available these days, the sky's the limit.

My impression is that the Mecha resin is really best for things like gears and joints that don't have to flex (so, like, held together with a screw, but the two parts ride over each other). hey, so with the hot water trick, you really should point out that since that water came in contact with resin that's un-cured, it's now contaminated and shouldn't be going back down the drain. Also handling un-cured parts without gloves is unsafe and gives a bad example. Long chain polymers are terrible for the body: they never leave your system, and will often build up into an allergic reaction. Resin allergy is a thing; once you hit a tipping point, it can even affect your respiratory system. Even though the surface has been cleaned, they're cleaned in alcohol solution that has...a lot of uncured resin in it. So it's still on the surface and dangerous to handle until they're cured fully.

@@BrinkHouse ah, I missheard it, my b. Point still stands about that water needing to be safely disposed of now however, since it touched uncured resin. Also not a particular fan of all the handling of the prints without gloves before they're cured. Long polymer chains of resin doesn't leave the body, and developing resin allergies is a tipping point which can affect people significantly. So the lack of safety being demonstrated here is a bit concerning.

@@HEMASimian A 'raw' print has still already been polymerized by the printing process. Once the uncured resin has been rinsed off of the surface, the danger of exposure is _negligible._ I'd honestly be more worried about exposure to the IPA the print was washed in, than to the print itself. Although some resins remain tacky or have a soft/gummy surface, 'post-cure' is mostly about strengthening the parts. Hell, some resins explicitly tell you _not_ to post-cure them.

How about mixing FDM joints with resin for the outside for detail? Hasbro uses a harder plastic (ABS i believe) for big joint pieces (shoulder/hip) but its capped with the softer vinyl. So you have one flexible and one more rigid together in one joint. Zipguy's 3d printable figure uses a TPU cap for the ball joints of the hips/shoulders i believe. His design is all FDM. The tpu piece is there to be replaceable. Action figures are definitely what i wanna print more so thanks for doing the legwork into researching a better resin!

Also, even the most flexible resin is still going to have practically zero compression. It’s just an unavoidable fact of life that you can’t create a universal pop-in joint that will function reliably in both PLA and resin, even if you do the hot water trick. Which is why I don’t. Instead, all my action figures take a page from the old G.I. Joe toys of the 1980’s (which managed to have fairly complex articulation despite being made entirely out of hard plastic) and go for a much simpler pin or clamshell approach when it comes to rotational movement. Once you stop fighting resin’s natural inflexibility and learn to just roll with it, articulation becomes a whole lot easier and that super expensive flexible resin can be saved for use as a strengthening agent, or for skinny fragile parts like capes, swords or other weapons.

I have been thinking about getting RESIONE Tough 3D Printer Resin for making toys with. I've mostly been using rich-opto brand and the ball joints don't always print right

I am not sure why, if you can print those articulated dragons, you wouldn’t be able to assemble the figures in Meshworks, Tinkercad or some other 3d software and just adjust tolerances right at the points of articulation so they would not be too loose or too tight. Must be some reason, like I am totally ignorant on the topic, or….

Have you tried printing these with Flexible resins? I've seen some rubber like resins marketed that seem durable without being excessively bendy.

Seems like a mix of resin for the arm parts/leg parts and then a 3d printer for the joints might be a possibility 😃

Really depends on how big of things you want to print. But the Mars 3 is easily my most used resin printer these days. Prints fast/amazing and is at a decent price
@TAiiNE
@TAiiNE 2 года назад
I started out with the Mars 2 mono (normal, not pro) . It's a small printer but I haven't had any issues with it when it comes to printing and the detail is still really really good, crisp and clear. Plus due to it being an older model the price point is often under $200 so it's affordable.

this is the resin i have been waiting for. I saw another company selling something like this then they removed it from their inventory like over night. For model making the chalkiness is a major drawback. Thanks for the great review.
@AmeraLabs
@AmeraLabs 2 года назад
Uncle Jessy, you should try AmeraLabs TGM-7 resin. You would be able to assemble and disassemble several times without any hot water. Not brittle. No need for mixing with other resins - use straight out of the bottle. Captures great details and feels like injection molded. You may find it much closer to the perfect resin :) To be honest it has a bit of chalkiness on joints that you can see, but not a lot.. Drop me a message and I'll send you a bottle to try :)

I have been fighting with these Tecco Toys models for some time. I love the designs but constantly snap the elbow and knee joints. I have designed a rounded peg/socket joint that I've had much better success with, but I'm a pretty poor hand with blender so I haven't continued on with that project. This hot water trick is so simple, and I'm excited to try it. Never occurred to me but makes perfect sense.

is there any guide about what printer for new ppl, mid level cost and if it have to be resin or fdm can do, for bust/figure 20-30cm and helmets. no need to be super quality high ress, (im thinking cost to make also i dont want prices on object same cost as store build) but have to look really great from 1 meter distance. i would also sand and color some of the object.
@adamshields7545
@adamshields7545 2 года назад
When you mentioned "adding some of the tenacious improved results" makes me wonder if the key isn't adding tenacious to this resin, but rather adding this resin to the Tenacious. Perhaps a 60/40 (Tenacious/Mecha). Playing with those ratios may reduce your chalkiness and give you a bit more of that rigidity you want. I dunno, just some random thoughts.
@evanlindsey1100
@evanlindsey1100 2 года назад
I read a review of the Mecha, and adding too much Tenacious doesn't work out too well for the resulting prints. I think it had something to do with the structural integrity of the resin. It just didn't hold together very well.
@sirayatech2

We believe mix here at the end is 75% Fast Mecha 25% Tenacious. You could try lower % but 20% may be too lower.

Ok it sounds dumb but can’t you just brush on some resin on the joints to make the joints a little thicker and then cure them with a ur flash light. Just like keep layering them and curing after.

I've had success applying polyurethane clear coat to resin pieces with an airbrush. Before coating I can scratch into eSun ABS-like resin with a sharp fingernail, this becomes impossible after coating and allowing the coat(s) to cure. Unfortunately this adds a lot of post-processing and wait time to what's already a tedious process.

If you’re just scaling up the models, the tolerances of the fit will be wrong. You have to adjust the 3D file to reduce the gaps.
