36:00 Peter makes a great point which is also why i don't believe Alonso was trying to bribe mechanics. He was only giving rewards to his own side of the garage and he always shared his podium bonuses with his mechanics, even at Singapore '09 and Qatar '21 - very random seasons with nothing at stake

18:30 So what you're telling me is that by the 4th test vs de la Rosa, on the Michelin tyres, he's already half a second a lap quicker than a driver who by this point had been driving F1 cars for 7 years, recently finishing on the podium for McLaren, in the car he helped build and knew inside out through his work as a test driver?

Haven't listened to the Pod, but I will imagine Ciaron will somehow manage to make Kimi out as some driver who managed to beat the "faster" McLaren cars.

Give it a listen. Not quite mate.
@fiftyin07

The McLaren was the faster car most of the time in 2007. Facts. Especially the first half of the season up to Silverstone/France. Once Ferrari brought the updates for Kimi, his pace was back and he finished every race on the podium for the rest of the year. But Massa was absolutely nowhere compared to Kimi’s pace where as the McLaren drivers were very very close.
@Razaak666
@Razaak666 8 дней назад
Massa was pretty close to Räikkönen actually, far from a clear number 2. He had quite a bit of bad luck. For about 6 consecutive races, the Ferraris swapped places in the championship standings.
@Don-Royall
@Don-Royall 8 дней назад
@@fiftyin07Somehow in the first 8 races. Massa had 4 poles. For context Kimi was generally carrying less fuel in qualifying he just make few mistakes and some drivers impeded him. The idea that the McLaren was faster is a fantasy.
@ciaronsmith4995
@ciaronsmith4995 8 дней назад
@@Don-Royall Massa usually carried less fuel than Kimi and was the ONLY driver of the top 4 in 2007, who had multiple years of experience on the Bridgestone tyres and Ferrari chassis cars since 2002 (remember, Sauber always used Ferrari chassis cars from the year before). This is the singular reason he was flattered in 2007/2008 and had his 2 best-ever seasons, by far. In fact, 2007 was his best ever season in terms of driving quality. Kimi/Alonso were nowhere near their true pace due to the fact they had to adapt to new tyres/cars in 2007 that Massa did not have to (Lewis only had to adapt to a new car, he had driven on Bridgestones in GP2). As soon as Kimi found any semblance of a setup (car was totally undriveable in the first half for him) he easily beat Massa from France onwards, despite still having a far from perfect setup. The McLaren was the best car. It had the best reliability, most mechanical grip and an incredible front end (which Kimi loves as this also helps with generating tyre temps and wet weather conditions). The Ferrari had more aero grip, but this made the car worse over kerbs and prone to understeer, which Kimi actually hates in his setup. Kimi is a super high rake, super short wheelbase, super positive front end-leaning driver. The opposite of Ferrari's design policy usually. Very much in line with a Red Bull/McLaren design philosophy. Kimi in that McLaren would have won the title by China. Easily. Alonso just made countless mistakes on top of his own setup struggles. Cheers mate.

Regarding Europe 2007 the rule was there at the time if you’re in a dangerous area Marshalls can help you back into the track, the same thing happened for the Michael at the same track in 2003 they closed it after that race also Lewis engine was running whilst others turned off their engines Also Lewis was unfortunate that weekend because of the tire failure he had in Q3 the day before and questionable McLaren strategy

1:07:04 i think mclaren leaving him out on tyres down to the canvas is absolutely sabotage. How often does a tyre actually last that long? The assumption would have been a blow out, but they eventually did have to call him in. Yes, sliding off on pit entry was a mistake, but the circumstances surrounding it were pretty harsh. Ciaron is pretty off the mark with his opinions for pretty much the whole podcast, cherry picking stats to try and validate himself. Its a bit painful to listen to as in the words of Hammy himself, "its being manipulated"

@ciaronsmith4995
@ciaronsmith4995 8 дней назад
Not quite. I suggest watching the 2006 Chinese GP, to understand the 2007 iteration of the race. Remember what happened in 2006: Renault changing Alonso's fronts made him extraordinarily slow during his second stint and allowed him to get passed by Fisichella and Schumacher and then on his second pitstop a wheel nut problem cost him over 10 seconds. There's a reason why McLaren waited until the last possible moment to pit Hamilton. The precedent had been set in the previous year when Renault put new inters as the track dried, and it completely compromised their pace and McLaren were trying to avoid an identical scenario. It was actually quite a smart strategy, the problem was that Lewis destroyed his tyres trying to keep up with Kimi and then Lewis subsequently crashed at the slowest point on the circuit: the pitlane entry. McLaren were merely trying to avoid the same thing from happening a year later in 2007. Had Lewis not taken Kimi's bait, (which Kimi admitted was part of the plan heading into the race) and burned his tyres far too quickly, he would have been world champion. Unfortunately, he made a colossal driving error at the pitlane entrance and lost the chance to win the title. His mistake under pressure was the primary reason he retired. Not the worn-out tyres. No shame in it. Few in history were better than Kimi Raikkonen when he was on it.

1:38:15 on the point of Lewis being on a par with Kimi and Nando. I agree and disagree. His stats were inflated kinda like Max now and Vettel beforehand however you can still look at them and consider their impressiveness as a certain McLaren golden boy right now is showing. If it hadn't been for the Turbo hybrid era and we'd been in say pre Williams era of f1 he'd still be a 3 or a 4 time champion similar to other greats and he still ends up near enough the top of any list. Also final point people who say is the Goat have a fetish for repping "the best" whatever there is no goat.

The interesting thing about what Kimi manager said was that Ron Dennis IIRC offered Lewis a chance in 2006 to drive the last 3 races but he turned it down most likely because you don’t wanna go up unnecessarily against prime Kimi as a rookie and also the incumbent tire changes as much as the experience would be nice 07 the tires were going a completely different location 06 Kimi one foot out of the door vs Lewis would have been very interesting though for me personally if he could have gotten within 3 tenths that would been a good job and if he out qualified him in 1 of the races an amazing job - Kimi didn’t lose a single quali battle to DLR in 06 after JPM left the team

I think in terms of qualifying, yes. In terms of actual racing, no chance. IMO. Lewis couldn't setup a car, manage tyres or manage a race as well as he can now.
@mrbluguy
@mrbluguy 8 дней назад
I wouldn't go as far as that because Lewis did show some inexperience in his earlier years. Formula One was also a different sport back in 2007 when everything was different. As Ace said, if you don't manage the Pirelli tyres, they will explode and the FIA will find a way to make them more useless.

I would still say the best rookie season in history. Take China how you want, he beat an established 2-time champion over the course of the season and I believe he finished on the podium in all of the first 12 races. Maybe his career might have been a bit different if he doesn't get the move on Alonso right, though in Australia I think.

Lewis was definitely well prepared but still made some rookie mistakes. But when it comes to Fernando then in my opinion, Fernando was not the sovereign champion that he should have been. Fernando threw the title away in Hungary. If he stays cool and doesn’t play any stupid games then he starts from the first row and finishes on the podium. Therefore he becomes champion at the end of the season.

@@Kero-23-23 all Fernando needed was a 2nd place in that race and he would’ve been World Champion. But no, he lost his temper and got himself an unnecessary grid penalty. 38:05 Also by Monaco Lewis was arguably faster in Australia (awful and I mean *AWFUL* blue flags behaviour by Sutil and Sato cost Lewis P2) and was better at Bahrain and Spain (partially due to Alonso going off at turn 1 probably damaging the car) Alonso was feeling the pressure by then 2007 Monaco GP first 2 stints of fuel is an all time race to watch is you just wanna see two drivers *going* for it no wonder they ended up a min ahead of Massa
