The Acting!!! She showed dismay, confusion, frustration, disappointment, nervousness, annoyance, irritation so well and so funny! Her oscar win was very well deserved!!
@@coachtim6188 the "I will" was a bit over acted , because it was geared on exaggeration to create a comedic effect ... and as we know majority of comedians don't win Oscar due to the fact that overacting does not necessarily translate in superb acting ... the I will is more for the naked eye , for the majority of people who can't dissect the attention to the detail that Whoopi exuded because the "I will" is too evident , instead the subtle way she pronounce the word "who" the way she projected , requires years to master . Either way her Oscar was for her whole character... but it was in the details where she got the edge against the other 4 nominees
I never thought it was an Oscar performance. A good funny part. Plenty of fun acting but not an Oscar performance. It is when an actor has little to work with and makes a gem , that is a good performance. Some the best performances are never recognised by the academy. She had a lot of back up to get nominated.
honestly she was great in this, so they gave her the oscar cause they know she deserved it for color purple... but at that time, it was for someone else... Great actors get their oscars for many reasons, the role they portray being the least.
I think we can all relate to how Oda May feels at being forced to give away the $4 million-very reluctant,to,say the least,at being forced to give away something we really wanted to keep,or in general,at being forced against our will to do something we would hate to do. Still,as Sam tells her @ 3:03,"You'll thank me for this," he was right,as she saw for herself that very evening, when Carl and Willie showed up at her apartment, and she and her two sisters were forced to hide in a neighbor's apartment,so as to survive.
Whoopi Goldberg was perfect for this role. She added the comic relief to what would otherwise been a dark and dreary movie had the role been played straight by another actor. Her delivery was spot in. Tony Goldwyn also was superb.
I saw this in the movie theater with my parents in 1991 when I was 10....the movie was a huge hit and was playing on multiple screens...the entire movie theater was in hysterics over Whoopi's scenes, and you could hear everyone laughing their asses off in the whole place!!!
If your gonna go that route ASAP cash the check and get the the hell out of dodge so Carl can’t find you, he went berserk trying too find that check lol
She waited two years to hide out from drug dealers and thugs only to fall into the hands of Sport or Matthew witnesses a murder, does the right thing and goes to the police and they protect her the best way they can, not WITSEC so she has no place go other than a nunnery seriously, nowhere else, no one, absolutely nun and she did straighten herself up with the help of the sisterhood of traveling biblical lessons and they helped her get her act together, even twice they took her back, but charity is kind of a habit with them.
This was the scene that won her the well-deserved Oscar. From how she marvelously played Celie in ‘The Color Purple’ to this role shows the range Whoopi can produce! I loved her in both as ‘TCP’ is my favorite film of all time.
"Think about it this way: You'll go to Heaven." "I don't wanna go to Heaven. I wanna go to the bank and cash the goddamn check." Whoopi is a legend lol.
+RejectedSpiritX These scenes had me IN STITCHES, when I went to see this,25 years ago this time, when Ghost was first released-Whoopi is just HILARIOUS, and A RIOT!
+sancm8898 I love the look on the lady's face, as Oda Mae and Sam leave, all like,"Is that woman ill? WHO is she talking to? It's VERY PLAIN TO SEE she's by herself!"(and being that this was even before the days of cell phones).
I'm laughing so much to teary eyes, it is just hilarious, the more you watch this video and every time it gets you,I just crack up.quite an ice breaker.
The bank lady probably thought she was schizophrenic with her talking to "no one." (As only Oda Mae could hear Sam of course.) Besides, she was only filling out the signature card with her and she didn't know of the large withdrawal.
"I know you don't think I'm given this 4 million dollars to a bunch of nuns?!" "I don't wanna go to heaven, I want to go back and cash the damn check!" Lol
@@janegritting318 Sure did! I love her. She's a great comedian. She kept the humor in this movie going! 🙂 Sad Patrick Swayze is gone though. If I remember right, they had fun making this movie together.
"I don't want to go to Heaven, I want to go to the bank and cash the goddamn check!" HAHAHAHA!! Whoopi totally deserved the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this!
Zahemi AZUL ISLAMI Hmmmm sounds like marketing bullshit to me. I'm sure Patrick was just grateful for the well paying job. No studio director or producer would obey an actors demands, any number of men could've played the part
One of life's most beautiful unforgettable love story. If you never believed in afterlife this movie will indeed make you think twice. Aside from the movie and it's excellent performers within it the chosen soundtrack was OVERWHELMINGLY great and each song fit each scene superbly. They don't make movies like this anymore. Rest In Paradise my dear Patrick Swayze, you left a legacy of excellence behind which will live on for generations to come.
just watched this with my parents and I really love it! They also told me how this movie was so huge back then and that it was in the cinema for 6 months!
+Drekze Aww me too. I lost my mom a few years ago and this was one of her favorite movies to watch. This movie still makes me cry like a baby. I miss my mom everyday but Sam is right tho. The love you have, you get to take it with you because I see her in my dreams whenever I need her the most. It's like she never left. it gives me peace like no other and sometimes I just wish I could just stay in bed and dream of her all day at a happy time.
You may like it. But for me I Fucking hate this movie so god damn much. I'm sorry for the false language but this is the worst movie I have ever seen. No joke!
I love this entire scene especially in the beginning when Whoopi´s character is fighting with the construction worker. Gets me everytime 😁 Shut up no one is talking to you. LMFAO!
Wow still hard to believe that Patrick swayze is gone he was amazing, dancer, actor, singer, very talented young man who captured the hearts of everything girl who loved and adored him . Most girls would love you play the role of Jennifer gray or Kelly Lynch both very talented and beautiful
“I’m gonna buy the building. No no wait...I’m gonna buy the block. I’m gonna make my sister go to a fat farm because she’s way too big!” Love Oda Mae Brown lol
It wasn't in here, but I LOVE the scene at the bank where Oda Mae/Rita Miller is talking to the security guard and Sam elbows her in the side, making her jump. Then she looked at the guard and said, "Gas. I get a little gas from time to time." Then, when the guard walked away, she hissed at Sam, "WOULD YOU STOP ELBOWING ME???" Cracked me up!!!!
Hallie Harker - when my mother, sister, and I went to the movies to see this, everyone in the movie theater hollered at that scene!! Whoopi was great for playing Oda Mae!
