I’m originally from Connecticut, the “witch hazel capitol of the world.” The indigenous Native Americans discovered its medicinal properties centuries ago. My dad always splashed on some witch hazel after shaving and I do too. It’s a lovely mild astringent and skin toner.

Hey Ash! Greetings from Atlanta! I ordered all the elements used in your video via Amazon. The Merkur razor and the Proraso pre-shave arrived today and I had my initial shave. Wow, what a difference! My father taught me to shave 45+ years ago using a safety razor, but most of the time since, I’ve been using some brand of disposable, multi-blade razor. Those days are over! Thank you for making “old school” new again! Warm rgds, Geoff

Floris is lovely stuff, perhaps something in their product line for every chap from Ian Fleming to Sir Winston and several royal's over the years. I believe they do bespoke fragrances too, for the well heeled. The use of a brushless cream caught me off guard. Face lathering is the most enjoyable part of the shave for me. For travel I like the Palmolive shave stick. Pair that with a Simpson Wee Scott brush and you are good to go without a large kit. The Reuzel shave cream contains witch hazel and rosemary extract. Perhaps you could skip the separate application of witch hazel when traveling, and not miss it. The company claims that this product is vegan. That has me scratching my head as to where the stearic acid is sourced.

I plead guilty to alternating between my Braun series 9 during weekdays, I have two children so they take most of my time up but the weekends are a treat for me when I get my Gillette slim adjustable out with a feather blade and the shaving cream/brush out. My little way of relaxing. I will have to give the shaving cream a go. I always favour the porasa shaving balm (original) as it so refreshing and aborbs so easily, the trick is finding a neutral moisturiser that does not clash with my deodorant and cologne. Sounds silly to some but to me it is one of those "chap things" I do. Great video as always Sir.

It's a Merkur 38c Barber Pole razor paired with a Feather blade. In my view a 6.5 out of 10 aggression razor, but paired with a super aggressive Feather. For me it's the perfect marriage for day to day shaving. But for heavy growth the terrifying Muhle R41 with an Astra blade. Either way Proraso pre shave is an absolute must. Anything Proraso is out of this world to shave with. Another great video Sir!

I'm not sure a DE blade shave is better than say a mach3 but it's cheaper per blade and more relaxing so in effect its like a mindfulness class first thing in the am. Also, if you're shaving everyday with a DE you're going to have a fairly raw face come Friday
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 2 года назад
No sir, the DE blade is much kinder on the skin than the multi-blade cartridge razors, which cut too close to the skin. The DE is a much better all round experience and a fraction of the cost.

The Chap's Guide - Completely agree. I find that a DE blade is not only more forgiving and economical, but with a little practice, even quicker and more efficient than any cartridge razor. I’m an infantry officer, and shave with a DE razor very closely every day even when out in the field (and I have a combination of heavy beard growth and sensitive skin). When I was shaving with cartridge razors I would often get razor burn and bumps. No longer. Thank you for sharing your very enjoyable shave ‘al fresco’.

Is it possible to lather Reuzel? I find it dry on my neck and it doesn't cur very well. Maybe a lathered version would cut better with extra moisture. I'm still learning the art of safety razor shaving.

The problem with safety razor shaving there is a learning curve and you to experiment with razor and blade combinations to get the best shave for your face. But once you get it worked out it's dead simple. The only thing I would like to try is a double safety razor with a bar on one side and comb on the other. This gives a side to use for the first past and the other for the second and third pass. Unfortunately I saw it a month ago and haven't been able to find it again,

I started to use a double edged razor in about 2018. I admit, I'm on my 2nd handset as the thread broke on my first one after about 3 years, but the replacement was about £15. The Astra blades I bought in 2018 (200 blades for about £20) are still going strong. Benefits of shaving like this? 1. It's an experience, a bit of meditative time in the morning 2. It costs a lot less than buying cartridge razor systems 3. There is far less plastic waste so it is much better for the environment 4. I'm putting far less gunk on my face (no aerosol shave gels etc)

Traditional shaving is definitely a relaxing ritual that I would recommend to anyone. Feeling clean and fresh are both understatements. Having said that, I have come to the conclusion that it is wrong to recommend razors, blades, soaps or other related products. What works for me may not work for others. The combination of skin type, hair type, hair growth direction AND taste, makes shaving strictly personal. What I always do is strongly encourage other gentlemen to try as many different combinations as they possibly can. That is the only way to go. 🙂
