What I love about Hugo is that he's taking you on this journey, and it's really personal for him and therefore his audience. How he talks about knowing these families, experiences with these shoes, and his knowledge. He's crafted a simple list like a narrative. The classic way of keeping your audience hooked and Hugo is a great storyteller anyway. Not only is the content enjoyable, but he's established himself as an authority in quality footwear.

Another delicious and satisfying video you served up here, Hugo! Your enthusiastic descriptions of the merits of these great shoemakers, coupled with the beautiful photographs, makes me want to try every one of them! I’d never heard of Corthay but his shoes looked absolutely exquisite. Thank you for putting so much time and effort into these videos, Hugo. I believe that as you post more, your viewership will grow, and these excellent videos will receive the high view count that they so richly deserve.

Thank you my friend for your appreciation and encouragements. We progress every day by an average of 300 subscribers and our ratio views/likes/comments is very good. I guess we are from the old school, but we prefer to progress slowly (without a clickbait every 3 minutes like some colleagues) but surely. We are building a very strong and loyal community that we cherish. Best ! Hugo

I haven‘t been able to try any of the brands shoes, as I need 13, sometimes 13 1/2 in size. We have a Ludwig Reiter store in Stuttgart, Germany. Ludwig Reiter is a company in Vienna, Austria. A pair of shoes will set you back $800, $1‘000 for a pair of boots. The store has a great service, the leather is very good and the brand carries quite a variety of shoes.

Great choice. I was well familiar with most brands from the part 1, but here I discovered some exquisite shoes I have never heard about. And even though I have neither the budget to buy them, nor clothes to wear them with (being a big James Bond fan, I would be more than happy with some simple black George Cleverley or Crockett & Jones boots), I still like to admire the craftsmanship. When I walk into a shop with luxury shoes or clothes, I often feel like walking into a gallery with fine art.

Love your videos Hugo! I learn so much. Just a little detail: manage to put the text you read for the video at head height, like in the other videos. Two quality videos. Interesting that you mention Church’s multiple times in each video, even referring to the brand as ‘famous’. Yet you never suggest it. Personally, I’m a fan. The Consul is hard to beat if you are looking for a classic cap oxford.
@SARTORIALTALKS
@SARTORIALTALKS 5 лет назад
Dear friend, I've been an unconditional fan of Church's until it's been sold to the Prada Group. The leather quality dropped (with some bad book-binding techniques to cut the costs) and the prices sky-rocketed. But maybe I should re-check them now even if I believe that Gaziano and Green are far superior in terms of quality. All my best ! Hugo
@RevJamesCostello
@RevJamesCostello 5 лет назад
@@SARTORIALTALKS Thank you for the reply, Hugo. There’s little doubting that Edward Green produces a superior shoe. I’m thinking more in the £400-500 range of shoe. I’m quite new to the whole quality shoe business. Last year I decided to experiment with a pair of Consul by Church’s and Connaught by Crockett & Jones, as both are considered the ‘quintessential’ cap oxford by each brand. Well, it didn’t end too well for Crockett & Jones. They never felt comfortable and pinched my feet (something I have experienced with every pair of oxford from this brand). I sold the Connaught’s after a month and the Consul are now my ‘go to’ cap oxford. So elegantly British and super comfortable. A lot of the brands that you mention have experimented with ‘binder’ and so on (Crockett & Jones calls it ‘cavalry calf’) and not to mention a lot of hideous fashion forward styles. I would agree that Church’s is more guilty than most. However, in its defence I would argue that the classic models (for example, the Consul, Chetwynd, Diplomat and Ryder) are still of a very high quality and very comfortable. All the best. :-)

Rev. James C I was watching the video and actually told my wife the same thing, I have a pair of Church's Chelsea Boots that I bought in Milan over 6 years now, I use them very often and they are in top shape, It's amazing how even the heel hasn't been deformed in these years!... Then I read Mr. Jacomet's comment and it's bad news... Hopefully they'll listen.

Really amazing review. Spot on in so many ways.... Pierre Corthay was one of the main foremen in the John Lobb factory in France before Hermes bought them out. I have two bargains I can share; the first of which is Max Verre of Neapolis, who is one of the finest shoemakers in the world. His biggest showroom is a US chain called Tom Ford. He makes each and every one for the guy. Also one of the most celebrated brands is Berluti, and these are all made by Stefanobi. You can buy these from Stefanobi for 80% less than a Berluti and it is the same product. Highly recommended; both of them. I would share stories from my Los Angeles years, but you would not believe them, and those people know. John Lobb is my all-time favorite and their production shoes are made in an Edward Green facility that is mentioned in this clip. Lobb's Prestige line is still made in the facility bombed twice by the nazi's. The best is the best and this is John Lobb. The suedes leathers come from Sweden, the museum calfs come from germany. If you want a discount on Lobbs, there is a girl who sells Lobb irregulars on ebay. God Smacked you with my wisdom, and it is all true.

In part one, I wondered if Allen Edmonds would make the list, but I am not surprised they didn't. I think they were better years ago, before getting bought out by a conglomerate. I think even Johnston & Murphy used to make a some nice oxfords many years ago - the "Aristocrat" line (if memory serves me), but that brand too has gone down hill. Nice to see Alden still worthy of being on the list and I hope they don't go the way of Allen Edmonds. I have a pair of Alden wingtip oxfords, and have had a couple of pairs of Allen Edmonds oxfords (and still have one pair). The Alden shoes have a clear edge on quality over AE.

Absolutely fantastic guide to some of the best high end luxury men’s shoes in the world right now! Im struggling to reconcile information I’ve heard about John Lobb RTW shoes. I’ve heard mixed things about them, although I just say most reviews have indicated that their construction and durability is lacking compared to the likes of other GYW shoemakers such as G&G and even Carmina. What is your experience? I know JL Bespoke is a step above however.
@SARTORIALTALKS
@SARTORIALTALKS 5 лет назад
Dear Sir, John Lobb Bespoke is a fantastic atelier. Today only Stephane Jimenez and Delos/Berluti can be compared to JL Paris (even if, in my opinion, Jimenez is above everybody). Concerning the John Lobb RTW, as you probably know, JL bought the former Edward Green Factory in the 1990's (before that JL was produced by Crockett & Jones). You can read a great review of the atelier by our friend Jesper at Shoegazing here : shoegazing.se/english/2018/02/25/report-john-lobb-paris-factory/ Hope it helps! Cheers, Hugo

I loved both videos , the part 1 and 2!!! ... i would like to know what thinks a man with your knoweledge about high end shoes of “popular” Brands (prada, Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci, Louis Vouitton) etc... when someone ask about my shoes and i say prada, everyone know they are expensive shoes... but what do you think about the se brands compared to all this amazing brands in your videos ... thanks in advance
@SARTORIALTALKS
@SARTORIALTALKS 5 лет назад
Dear Luis, it's simple : all these brands are global fashion brands and not shoemakers. It means they have their shoes crafted for them elsewhere. A few brands featured in Part 1 and Part 2 of this video series are indeed making shoes for the high street brands. The problem is simple : Prada, Gucci and co will add a big % on the price because you pay the brand for probably 70%. Honestly, for half the price of a pair of Prada shoes, you can have more stylish and more durable shoes. Hope it helps ! Hugo

Where is Aubercy?! ololooo!! 😱 But still.. it is definitely a good list of pair of arts. My favourite definitely it is Corthay, Pierre has a good personality and it is a genuine person. Personally I think if you buy invest your money in this kind of shoes, you're not playing for the shoes it self, but as well a history, where you'll be able to feel the soul of the artisans. This is literally another level. So I would suggest, if you can, meet the artist itself personally. Because it's more than the shoes. This is above of fashion brands.. and this kind of things. May everyone still having a blessing week. More Grace and Peace.

I have recently discovered this channel and have started following Hugo on Instagram. Great content and peculiar but fantastic taste! I like all leather lace-up oxfords in black and chestnut colors, and loafers in burgundy. My go for brands for the 15 years have been Fratelli Rosetti and Doucal's. But those are not on the list. I wonder why? Recently I tried Allen Edmonds lace-ups oxfords and didn't like them. Keep up the good job! I'm going to try your recommendations.

I was curious as well - thanks Hugo for your reply. Just to share my very limited experience (only started my sartorial journey after I came across this channel): I picked up their chelsea boots in London last Xmas - it is a simple design but the colour of the leather caught my eye and the shape is rather slim/slick which I like (I am a young, Asian working professional). Having subsequently watched part 1 of the shoe review by Hugo, my impression is that while Magnanni hails from the same city as some of the more established Spanish brands, it is a relatively young name which perhaps explains the design. I like the pair I got as I am relatively young myself! But will certainly have a look at some of the other brands recommended in these videos when I have the time and budget. Do you have a pair from them Nestor? Best.

Bonjour Hugo, as usual an excellent review... We will have (rightfully so) notice the absence of Berluti which does not deserve anymore the right to be named a top shoe brand given the abysmal quality and crazy price.. However (and I know we cannot mention everyone).. notice the absence of a few key brands here such as Bestetti, George Cleverley, Mario Bemer and of course the quintessentially french (but very discrete) Aubercy. Any thoughts on how you are ranking/appreciating these?
@SARTORIALTALKS
@SARTORIALTALKS 5 лет назад
Good morning Yann! Concerning Berluti, I've been the last to defend them (in memory of my love for them) but it's impossible now for the reasons you mentioned. For Bestetti, since Freccia passed away I had no occasion to check the quality and reliability of the shoes so I put the brand "on hold" for the moment in our list. George Celverley is bespoke and has been featured in our bespoke review on this channel called "who are the best bespoke shoemakers in the world" ? Concerning Mario Bemer, the situation is that Mario left the company a few months ago as well as his Japanese shoe maker Seiji Miyagawa. So we have to assess how the company is developing and if the quality remains. And for Aubercy, we've been featuring them also in our "best bespoke shoemakers" episode because they do a great job in this field. For the RTW, even if it's very nice, I find them slightly overpriced now (considering the fact that they craft in Italy. So they are not quintessential French as many believe). I hope I answered your questions, Best, Hugo
@yannrogombe6195

SARTORIAL TALKS Many thanks Hugo. As always very helpful insight. One last question.. the actual construction of the shoes (apart from the Norwegian for instance of Paolo Scafora) was not toi explored for obvious reasons in this episode. But from your perspective.. how do you feel about many relatively high end makers doing Blake stitching vs Goodyear and selling it at similar prices then too Goodyear welted shoes (Berluti - wrong exemple comes to mind - but so does Aubercy for instance which are exquisite). Do you think that Goodyear welted shoes are inherently always better quality because of durability etc or some very well done Blake-stitched shoes might reach the same level of craftsmanship and quality ? As always thanks a lot for your (very appreciable and expert) insight. 🙂

Hello, I have a couple of questions about your list. Earlier in the video, you mention maker Ricardo Freccia Bestetti, but I didn't see you put them at a designated spot within the list. Although I believe they do make bespoke shoes, I'm not entirely familiar with them. Is the level of work in their ready to wear line in comparison to others on the list not as high? The other maker that I was wondering about is the Japanese bespoke maker Yohei Fukuda, who I know makes a small batch of ready to wear shoes. I have one pair of his ready to wear line and I honestly, in my limited knowledge, think the level of work and attention to detail within his shoes is of the highest quality you can find on the RTW level. I'm no expert so I would defer to you on this. Do you think his work is at level of those on your list and worth the investment? Thank you.
@SARTORIALTALKS
@SARTORIALTALKS 5 лет назад
Good morning, and thank you for your contribution. Concerning Freccia (who was a good friend of mine), as you probably know he passed away three years ago. I know the brand has been sold to a new owner but I never had the opportunity so far to check the new production. This is why, for the moment, I put them "on hold" until I can see the new production. As for Fukuda, I didn't know he was making RTW. I thought he was only an excellent bespoke shoemaker. I'll definitely investigate this. Cheers, Hugo

I absolutely love the French style. Bottier, Corthay, Caulaincourt shoes look amazing. Daring and flashy especially those patinas. The English style is very conservative, traditional, but regal. 2 totally opposite styles. I like them both for different reasons. I don't see the distinction in Italian shoe style. If you want style to make a point, go French.
