Most authentic bourbon reviews. You guys have an amazing channel, I love the fact that you go out and find your own bourbon and you’re not getting free bottles from distelleries and you’re giving your honest opinion without being tainted by free unicorn bottles. Cheers to 100k!
Photosynthesis…. That’s what I’m telling the guy at my local liquor store from now on. “Give me something that tastes like photosynthesis”. Great episode guys. Keep up the good work.
All I have to say is keep making these videos PLEASE! Y’all are by far my favorite channel to watch. I appreciate the honesty, humility & humbleness approach to how you describe and discovery bourbon and other liquors for that matter. All while y’all are pretty damn spot on with your knowledge. Keep it goin fellas!!
I'm having the John J Bowman Single Barrel at home tonight and when I was sipping on it I got the "sweet tart finish" that Trent brings up from time to time. Still a very underrated bottle IMO, but just a matter of finding it a lot of the time. Great video!
Keep trying new stuff and enjoy. One trick that helped early on was to let the glass dry out after you've had your whiskey. Then, return to the glass and smell it. The very 1st time I tried this, I couldn't believe that the Rye I'd had smelled just like an oatmeal cookie. To improve tasting, get the whiskey all around your mouth. Have fun!
John J Bowman used to be a daily drinker but is almost impossible to find in VA now. I've seen more bottles of Blanton's in the last few months than JJB. Lol. I've started buying the easier to find Bowman Brothers Small Batch which is closer to Buffalo Trace but JJB is slightly better than EH Taylor to me.
Great job and entertaining as always. SLB Drinks should go over 100K Subscribers this weekend! Well deserved. You will need to find a place to display your RU-vid 100K award so we can see it.
I got a Baker's 7 recently that was 8 years and 2 months old. It is fantastic. I've also noticed from watching many of your videos that Trenton seems to like things with a sweeter profile, while Kurt seems to enjoy the oaky and spicier notes much more than Trenton. I think my palate aligns much more with Kurt's.
I've found that I like both. That's something I love about Laphroaig 10 (which is out of my usual price range - it'll be a long while before I can get another bottle) - it has that definite, emphatic peat chemical and smoke and earth, and then there's a very sweet and fruity whisky underneath (it has a very clear pineapple note).
John J is freaking amazing. I can barely get it, and I live in Virginia. Jim Beam actually has another single barrel at 108 proof that's solid for $40. Love the channel!
I was actually drinking Bowman brothers small batch tonight! I grew up in Fredericksburg Va and live an hour from the bowman distillery. I’m planning a visit next month for my birthday
Love the honest and unbiased videos. So many people associate price with quality. These videos show that when you go in without any expectations you might be surprised where bottles fall into place.
New to your channel, and love it! I have a request video, if you have not already done one I missed. The video I would love to see is you pick out a small kit of spirits and all the basic mixers and other items needed to get someone started. Maybe a little more than the very basic. Something like three or four midrange spirits and enough mixer materials to make a variety of mixed drinks. We all love and admire your well stocked bar! I'm a fellow Hoosier, retired, on a somewhat limited budget. On top of that my wife would limit my "dream bar" any how! You know how that works! Thanks for what you do and thank you kindly for considering my request!
Interesting comments about the Henry McKeena. It was my premium go-to for years, when it was always on the shelves for under $30. Didn't have any for the past 3 yrs because it became allocated and 2X the $$. I received a bottle for Christmas 2022, it's not a good as I remember long past bottles. I suspect that due to demand for aged Sngl barrel bourbon Heaven Hill is now choosing lesser quality barrels barrels for Heny McKenna, and using the good stuff for their premium allocated bottlings.
Great job as always boys! Trenton...I think you mean chlorophyll (substance) versus photosynthesis (chemical reaction). Either way...never heard of that tasting note before! Cheers!
The only one on the video I have seen where I live is the Baker's @ $85Cdn. I recently picked up a couple Old Forester Single Barrell Cask Strength ( 4 actually since at $86 they were about $40 a bottle cheaper than the last time I saw them) and a couple Knob Creek Single Barrel 120 proof.
Hey Trent. I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that Bowman was distilled in Kentucky at Scazerac then hauled to Fredricksburg VA to be distilled again in a copper still, and bottled there. Thus making it officially a VA bourbon.
It is saz juice mainly just bottled in VA but they run it again through a pot still even tho buffalo trace already column stilled it lol mainly for show get it while you can 😂
As you know I love all your videos but I think these blind taste tests are my favs. I do blinds myself often with only 2 at a time (because I only have 2 glancarin glasses...at the moment). I will have to look for and try the Bowman. I do have to mention that 2 of my fav single barrels were your picks: New Riff and Wilderness Trail.
IF yall came out and nailed the blind from start to finish it would look inauthentic despite your best intentions. I have come to expect some amount of surprise with any blind by any taster.. pro or amateur. Great job.. please do more blinds, it helps us all learn.. you folks as well as the fans.. One o' the best bourbon channels on the Tube!
I too, like Trent, used to sip on McKenna frequently and love it. I recently purchased another and opened and had the same reaction you guys had. I assumed my palate had just changed and I didn’t quite enjoy it as much as I used to.
Love your channel! Congratulations on the milestone - 100k. I have noticed inconsistencies in Henry McKenna 10. I loved my bottle, bought another as a gift and was dismayed the gift bottle didn't have the same magic. Whisky is hard to produce consistently, it's not Oreos. The demand explosion certainly caused challenges for HM.
I love you guys! I've been drinking bourbon for years but have been mainly Makers mark and Jim Beam but in the last few months started trying other's! I now have approx 30 bottles and we seem to have the same palette because you guys haven't steered me wrong yet!
Great! You guys are not helping me with my favorite pour John J Bowman SIB; add this video to help making it harder to get because everyone is after it. Lol! Seriously, great video. Thanks for doing this; just reaffirms what I been saying about JJB
Always love the blind tastings. Trenton really seams to have a knack for picking out notes that identify a bourbon on occasion. I would love to get my hands on a bottle of the John J. Bowman. I have heard a lot of good things about it on this channel.
Hey guys, when I sip a higher proof then sample something lower. It has a completely different taste. Should you be sipping water between samples? Your videos have saved me and condemned me. In a good way. ✌️
😂Y'all guys are almost as crazy as I am. I love the way you joke with each other. And of course I love the information too. Even if I can't afford to buy what you're talking about (if there's any single barrel out there that's within my price range, I don't know of it), y'all are always interesting, entertaining, and informative. 🙂
I always thought the John J Bowman was distilled at Buffalo trace then shipped to Virginia , distilled again then aged? Can someone correct me on this? Trenton said the opposite. Anyone know for sure?
Not surprising with McKenna. I've mentioned before, but that one has been real hit and miss for me. I've had a couple that were pretty average, but I've also had a couple that were really good. I also quite enjoy Baker's 7yr. That's a good bottle.
Another great show. Not surprising Trenton passed on earthy taste and Kurt liked it with Kurt love of peated scotch and Trenton’s love of avoiding all things scotch. Love the top 2 choices and never had the bottom 2. Love the blinds.
Just picked up a bottle of John j bowman single barrel at my local store it was limit one I had heard of it but never tried it watched this video while I was at work and looking forward to giving it a try being eagle rare is my normal pour .
Remember, you were doing SINGLE barrel products so they can really vary in profile bottle to bottle ( barrel to barrel ). On my 4th McKenna, 2 were excellent, one really good and one just ok. Thankfully the first one was excellent because if I had gotten the 'ok' bottle first, there might not have been any more. Got a very good Bakers 7 and a really good Bowman so been very lucky. Haven't sipped any Lucky 7 at all so ??? Trenton does nail the Beam products pretty accurately but 'photosynthesis' as a tasting note???? Lol
I've read that McKenna 10 is one of the most inconsistent bottles. I had a really good one at a bar... kind of afraid to but a bottle since idk if it'll be a good batch or not.
As I type the frosting in a can is in the fridge and graham crackers in the pantry. Must be a 60's thing. On a side note how about a blind bottom shelf vs a top/middle shelf.
You two are cracking me up! I laughed out loud about the Mater frosting! And I'm also a big fan of the WTWT, Matt Porter! I've been looking for John J. Bowman for awhile now. I've never had it. Love y'all! Keep up the great videos and entertainment.
The last place Henry McKenna IMHO is right on. Maybe you were also correct to mention that since the price has gone up and perhaps the brew has gone down. I purchased that Henry McKenna because you two raved about it's flavor and smoothness and frankly it is very low on my list for the bottles I have. I find it to be high proof harsh on the palatte and very earthy tasting. GReat show though and I'm gonna try to find some of the Bowman in my travels.
Love the blinds. Gotta agree the HM 10yr is not something I seek out. Never had the L7. I like the B7 a lot. (Well done IDing that one Trenton!) also love the JJB. I got lucky enough to buy a cask strength about a month ago, but haven’t opened it yet. Cheers!
Good show guy, love the blinds and the upsets in the results haha. I’m reasonably new on the bourbon journey (we don’t get a whole lot of variety in the UK), but I REALLY like the McKenna 10yr Bottle in Bond, for me as a beginner it’s tasty and surprisingly easy to sip on
Chlorophyll is the organelle in which photosynthesis occurs. Oxygen is the byproduct of photosynthesis. I always equate this tasting note to cut grass.
Have you thought about creating specific playlists for like Whiskey Wars or Blind Tastings. I personally really love these types of videos and would love to be able to access them easier
I absolutely love the McKenna 10-year SB! The viscosity could be a little higher. That would come from a higher proof. Yet as is, it is a "Buy Again" hands down!
Come on Kurt we JUST talked about how good McKenna was and then you film this video LOL but great episode! Make sure "photosynthesis" is added to the SLB palate wheel moving forward :)
Haha. I thought Curt said “Mater Frosting” also. And I thought he was gonna say it was tomato frosting…yuck. Great show. My go-to Bourban RU-vid channel.
I love your videos!!! You both do such a great job reviewing all the bourbons. I am going through Valparaiso. Where do you recommend shopping for some bourbons?
I know that you guys don't want to drink a ton, but you should do a video to see if you get different tasting notes when you put different amounts in the glencarins. I feel like aromas and noses get all kinds of screwed up when you pour less than an ounce and a half.
Great stuff guys!! I really need to work on getting a bottle of John J Bowman. Pretty sure it's right up my alley. Also, I'm with Kurt - when my Mom made a cake when I was a kid, if there was leftover home made icing, she would put it in between graham crackers and that made a great snack. Now, when I make a cake, if there is extra icing, I go lookin for the grahams....🤤
Gotta pick me a up a bottle of that John j bowman. You guys should try iron fish maple syrup barrel aged bourbon made here in Michigan. Really tasty stuff.
"I'm getting a note of atom splitting, maybe even cold fusion." 😂 That Baker's 7 is on my radar. I keep hearing good things and I'm hoping I'll be able to find it.
Interesting. Henry McKenna was once one of my favorites. Last bottle I procured seemed to have a different profile. Thought it was my palate. Would like to see a blind taste with this bottle today and the bottle Trent has with barreling and bottling date for both. The distilleries do an excellent job with consistency but these are single barrels in different oak barrels from corn grown in a different season. Others, please join my bandwagon and request to blind taste this bottle, Trent’s, and maybe a third different bottle from different barrel if one is available. They respond when multiple requests are made for the same review.
I love Baker’s 7 single barrel, and seemed to me to make a jump in character/quality/profile when they moved Baker’s from small batch to single barrel several years ago.
I walked into a Costco a couple days ago and asked if they had anything new. The guy said "you just missed the Handy...just sold the last bottle". I asked him why he hated me so much that he would tell me that. They got 9 bottles and sold it for $84.
I have not liked the mckenna 10 yr bottles that I've had either, but I have heard that you love it or hate it since its a single barrel.. just Haven't found one of the "love it" bottles of the McKenna yet
Bowman has a great line of products that is a easy sipping pour. I was grateful to pour for a friend this past weekend that stopped by. He hadn’t tried any before. So the Bowman Brothers for a lower price daily and the J J for after dinner sitting around a fire crushable. 👌 I want to pick up a Port. Does anyone have any experience and thoughts on that bottle?
Can't wait to get my hands on one of those John J's!!! Great video! Even though I thought Kurt was gonna go all "spreading the icing like the jam" 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
"THE BEAUTY OF THE BLIND"...now THERE'S a tee shirt! I think I figured out Trenton's strategy. It's taste, talk...retaste, talk....retaste again, talk...and THEN, all the glasses are empty! Way to go Trenton! Interesting show too, guys. Thank you!
