I recently heard about a new project ESPresense: a Bluetooth tracker running on relatively cheap ESP32’s that will give you room presence as you move around your smart home. In this video, I show you how it works, how to easily set it up and how to integrate it into Home Assistant for whole house room tracking for use within Home Assistant Automations!

I tired ESPrecense on 3 ESP32 in my house just before the end of the 2021. After trailing them out for a week or so I ended up disconnecting them as the performance was all over the place. Also, it was extremely tricky to single out my apple watch from all the beacons recognised. In terms of reaction the location would not update as quick as one would expect e.g. as soon as you walk into the room. I connected a PIR sensor on one of the ESP32 devices and it would still get a few good seconds before it would locate me in the room. I had 2 devices on the ground floor and one on the second floor. You could see my location randomly jumping from ground to 2nd floor which is really disappointing. I understand when the location is jumping between two neighbouring rooms not two flights of stairs.

you probably need to place it in a way, that there is always at least one sensor in a line of sight, so at least one of the sensors is getting a clean low noise info about your location, and all the others would just help you understand where exactly near that sensor you are.
@iliasaitidis6322

I am glad that this works for you. It seems very unreliable in my usage. I have it tracking my phone, my watch (both Apple) and two Tiles. Even though they are all on my person they show either different rooms or not_home. The phone seems the most consistent but I can have it in my pocket about two feet from the office ESP and over the course of an hour it will show not_home for 40% of the time. Are there any setting you changed other than the obvious maximum distance.
@dgillings
@dgillings 2 года назад
I have the very same problem. The polling of the distance seems VERY slow (running HA on a raspberry pi 4) I've added 4 devices (as I couldn't find the MAC of the apple devices - so just added them all with unique names to work out which was which) and the locations vary from 1-4 metres even when all the devices are together

Thanks a lot Lewis for the video. I would love to see a follow up video on how to use this in automations. Here is what i want to use it for. I have a 5 months old baby often sleeping in baby stroller. and we will take him to different rooms for sleep. Now, i have a input boolean (baby sleeping) and input select where the values are the rooms that the baby is sleeping. Then my announce script via alexa will not play notification in the room that the baby is currently sleeping. So, currently i have to select every time where the baby stroller is, which is annoying and we sometimes forget to do that. I was thinking to hook up a bluetooth to the stoller (like a watch) and use ESPresense to change the value of the input select automatically. Should work.

Hi, Lewis, thanks for making this video about ESPresence. Have you tried comparing this to ESPhome's ble presence? I heard very good reviews about ESPresence but I'd prefer using the ESP home since it's so customisable and you can use the same esp to track other sensors or use it's GPIOs as you please.
@EverythingSmartHome

ESPHome isn't (to my knowledge) quite as advanced or customizable as this (at least wasn't the last time I tried it) - and yes I would love to see them merged also
@Jonahmeans1024
@Jonahmeans1024 2 года назад
@@EverythingSmartHome I see they (ESPresence) added support for some sensors (TH, PIR and a few others) but it's pity they don't take advantage of ESP home since it's got an integration for almost any sensor. What I'm trying to do is limit the amount of radio in my house...so the fewer ESPs that do multiple jobs the better... it's already quite crowded and I've just started this home automation journey 😅
@EsotericArctos
@EsotericArctos 2 года назад
@@Jonahmeans1024 There are multiple different ways of getting firmware onto an ESP. ESPHome is only one way of doing it. Premade devices and premade firmwares are perfectly fine. You can even write your own in the Arduino IDE. With the right coding, you could add lines to integrate these into ESPHome if you wanted to. The ESP Chip still runs the same codes regardless of what programming tool did it :)

This is very cool, I really like the idea of room detection and I have a number of Shelly motion sensors around the house. I live on my own, so I had the idea, instead of buying a smart watch and waring it all the time, I created an input boolean helper for each room, then say if I walk into the living room, the sensor picked up motion and turned the living room helper on. That helper then stays on while I am in the living room, If I move into the hallway, it turns on the hallway helper then turns off the living room helper, then move into the kitchen and it turns on the kitchen helper. From there I did cool things. For example I have 2 tv's one in the living room and one in the kitchen. I used to say Alexa turn on living room tv or Alexa turn on kitchen TV, Now I wrote a script that depending on which helper is on I can now just say Alexa turn on the TV. Now it only turns on the TV in the room I am in! This works well for my scenario, but yours would work well if you have multiple people in the house. My one question and this stopped me from doing it your way is: I have a long narrow hallway, is it difficult to get the sensor to just track you in the hallway only and not overlap the other rooms?

If anyone else has the same issue, my ESP32 device failed to connect to the MQTT broker. After a bunch of trial and error, switching the MQTT broker's hostname in the esp32 device's config to be the static IP of my home assistant instead of core-mosquitto did the trick!

Very cool project and great video. I already bought some ESP32 and have been playing around with ESPHome ble tracking without much luck. My impression was that it failed because iPhones, AirTags and the latest Tiles (what I have available) use bluetooth MAC address randomisation to prevent everyone else from tracking you over time and space. If someone with malicious intent were to enter your fitbit MAC address, they would be able to track you around the world, albeit only in places with hackable computers and other hardware using BLE.

Hey! Great video! I want to know if this can be a good solution for an hotel. Let me explain: I have an hotel in Mexico, a Motel, better said. In Mexico, people rents a motel room for about 4-6 hours to have intercourse. Well, this is my situation: in order to be with my family, I do not live in the city where the motel is. I suspect that my employees don´t report truly how many people enter by day, and I don´t want to get cameras installed because in Mexico, having cameras in a motel is seen by clients as a privacy vulneration. So what I need is this: I want to install a system that let me know, in real time and at long distance, if a room is occupied but without vulnerating my client´s privacy, so I can more easly know how accurate are my employee´s reports. I would like a sistem so I could install sensors in the rooms (presence or movement sensors, weight sensors for the beds, etc.), and I could see in real time if a room is occupied or not in that moment. Much better if I can get a report about how many times and how much time a room was occupied in the day. Do you think this is possible? Please let me know. It can help me a lot. Thanks in advance!

@@pedromtgomes In the companion app, go to manage sensors, enable Bluetooth BLE from there and that should be good to go. you can adjust power levels if you are having difficulty picking it up

How did you get this to work with your Fitbit? Everything I have read says the Fitbit stops being a BLE beacon as soon as it's paired to your smartphone, and then it will only talk to your phone and nothing else. And using your phone as a beacon doesn't work either, it only works when you have the bluetooth menu open on the phone.

any experience with apple watch? Do you know the best way to go about tracking multiple devices to a person? watch + phone? does the room you are in update to the latest reported? If i leave my phone in a room charging and walk around the house, how often would the room the phone is in update and trigger im back in there? I have a few esp32's sitting here im gonna load this up with.

Omg I been waiting for room presence ever since smart homes been a thing. I been waiting to see if apple would use the uwd chip on the homepod but we are talking about apple it be 20 years before they do something smart like that. And I have two of those the 32 chip laying not needing what to do with.

How do you power the ESP32s in the different rooms? Dangling from some USB chargers? Battery powered?

1 question... It is better the keep the esp at the middle of the room preferably at the ceiling so as to not be in the way... So what can we do if we got a 2 story house... The BLE client gets recognised by the esp which is in the room below that is attached to the ceiling... So what is the work around for this?

Can I ask a complete neophyte question? My HA uses ZHA. Will installing the MQTT component for this cause me any ZHA issues?

I added my galaxy watch to be tracked but if i leave home ot still reports being in my office for 8 hours. Even when im moving around the house in different rooms its still reported in the office. Other devices like phones work to a degree but still very flaky.

Hi Lewis? Is there an easy way to power these ESPs with some kind of battery? I don't think it's worth it to sacrifice an outlet in every single room for this.

I think ESPHome has a presence / RSSI signal / etc but i liked how ESPresense changes values of position for each device on HomeAssistant! Hope those projects merges because at esphome there's no need for MQTT configuration and we can use ESP32 chips for other functions at the same time
@EverythingSmartHome

It does but not as advanced as ESPresense like you say, would love to see them merged

Absolutely agree. Great project and would love to try, but I won't for the moment as I my system works perfectly with many ESPHome devices over wifi. I would literally have to set up MQTT only for ESPresence. Very much hoping for the merge or a version that allows both mqqt and tcp.

Those are updating Esprensense with version v3.x.x, note that "Send to rooms topic" will be deprecated. Change state_topic: "espresense/rooms" to state_topic: "devices/johns_iphone" so you will not get "not_home" in topics while checking sensor in developer tools. Instead you will see correct room name which you set, for instance bedroom.

Thank you for all the good content! There is now an HA integration, which makes it possible to do bluetooth proxy device tracking in combination with ESPhome. It is called ‘Bermude BLE’. Would you be so kind to make a tutorial about it?

Aweseome video but for the life of me, I cannont seem to get my Wear OS watch to show up on the ESP32 scan list. I know what the MAC address is of my watch (using nRF connect as a bonded device and its tells me in watch settings), during scan and log mode, the ESP32 sees many other MAC addresses but my watch, which is within 2 ft of ESP32 does NOT show up with the MAC address. I've also turned off the BT on my phone so it cannot connect to it. I'm a doing something wrong or does it not work with Wear OS watches? Is the MAC different? any help would be greatly appreciated!

In 2013 or so Apple introduced iBeacon, which was pretty cool. I still have a dev kit somewhere. It sort of died but I would like to know if ESPresense is built from scratch or if it uses the Apple technology, because that really worked pretty good

I currently have a few ESP-32s set up as bluetooth proxies using ESPHome. Would using ESP Presence create a bluetooth proxy as well essentially using the same ESPs to do both the proxy AND presence detection or would I need new ESPs?

Hi. I setup the espresense project using 5 esp32-wroom-32u devices. The result is disappointed. Devices after flash have very very weak WiFi signal. Secondly most of the times does not recognise my Garmin watch or my mobile. And if it is recognised (very few times) it is extremely slow. I have the same issue with all 5 esp32 devices. Any idea what causes my issue?

Smart switches with built-in ESP32s are one way to get ESP32s around your house. Another way is plug-in ESP32 switches. This needs to be integrated into Tasmota. Not sure who uses ESPHome.
